Title: Success!
Post by: Computer Hope Admin on March 27, 2007, 02:00:06 PM
Wow, it's been a rough ride, but it definitely looks as if the new forums are going. I'm sure it will not be smooth sailing for the next few days however I believe it couldn't be much worse than the previous few days. Please report any issue that is not already mentioned below on this post and we'll start working on setting everything else up.

Known issues that should be resolvable:

Reported issues unable to duplicate (mention it if you can):

Known issues that have to be worked around:

On requests on the list:

Wiki Template:

If implemented again need to fix these issues.

Extra consideration and work.

Yay! :D *Does happy dance*
Seriously, though, good job admin! I knew you could do it. ;)
I don't really care for the new emoticons, though, but other than that i like these forums!

I'll add it to the list, I'm sure something like that could be easily changed and thanks for the vote of confidence. :) oops sorry for using the emoticon.

Done. Believe from what I see on YaBb that it was 65x65.

The first things that I noticed (and didn't like)....

There is no 'All' link to read multiple pages.

At the bottom of the screen there is no direct link to go back to 'All Forums' so now we have to use that dropdown menu.

The emoticons.

The look & feel of the new place, the old place felt sort of special (different) but now it's ho hum.

Give it some time to grow on me. :-\

Now I've found that after Dilbert posted that screenshot I have to scroll sideways to read the text messages.

That would happen on YaBB too. Sorry, I just used ImageBot to upload the clipboard, didn't bother to resize it. Let me do that...
Title: Re: Success!
Post by: Fed on March 27, 2007, 02:55:41 PM
On the old forum the oversized pics were contained in their own box with scrollbars but they didn't effect the post text.
Scrolling sideways to read a post just puts me off reading it all together.

That icon has a size of 45x59 so will be stretched to current setting. I'm not exactly sure what YaBB's default size was, just assumed it was what I set it to because the default image is that size. Well look into it some more.

Nathan,

One of Dilberts images in this thread is quite large.

I've attached an image where you need to set the image size, which will prevent the forum from being stretched by its width.

Everything's looking pretty good so far, Nathan.  I kinda don't like the post page (I liked it better with white text boxes), but everything else looks alright, even if it is all a bit off.  Just something we'll have to get used to.  I only have a few minor complaints...

When posting in a thread, instead of taking us back to the thread, it takes us back to the forum.  I don't know about everyone else, but I'm not a big fan of this.

Also, hitting Tab jumps up to the PM's section instead of the Post button.  Anyway to rearrange the tabindex?

I'm not seeing the NEW icon for any new messages, but this is my first time logging on to the new board, so maybe they'll start showing up for me soon.  I've also had a couple of problems posting, but I'm not sure what's going on.  Might've just been a fluje.  If it happens again, I'll give you more info.

I'm sure it's just a CSS stylesheet setting that can be changed to white. After you mentioned it and looking at it I tend to agree. If anyone else has comments or doesn't want it white speak up.

Regarding being taken back to the forums
Look at Dilberts post on the first page it's a profile setting that you can adjust so it's how you want it. I can't seem to find a way to have this as default.

Being addressed, something with the YaBB template. You can temporarily fix it if you change to the SMF template, but it will completely change the look. I hope to change the default template completely tomorrow and this is one of the things I'll change.

Dilbert:

Didn't change anything with attachments, try it in a different post. It's very possible that you may only be able to do one attachment per thread.

EDIT: LOL, I was bored and gave Ghostie a Smite. Now his Postcount's at 0. I gave a Applaud, and he's now got 2 karma -- but 0 posts. ;D

(I've been smitten once already, so I think this is a fluke. But it's still funny.)

Oh!  I totally overlooked that.  Thanks a bunch, that's much better.

Another thing I noticed...when I went to quote your post, your quotes didn't show up (do you get what I mean?).  It's not really a big deal to me, but I figured I'd bring it up in case anyone else is bothered by it.

ALSO...that posting problem came up.  Whenever I'm posting, if someone makes a post, while I'm writing mine, it won't go through.  It says the following...

Warning - while you were reading a new reply has been posted. You may wish to review your post.

And then I have to try again.

EDIT:  Forgot to mention that the NEW icons are showing up now.

Yeah it's on the to-do list and something I hope to add by the end of the day, have to do some customization to the template, actually working on it now. Just a Perl guy and have to get used to all this PHP.

List of to-do's is first post on this thread.

I just encountered this issue while doing the last post, it gives you the option to review the post but if you just hit the post button again it will submit your post without having to review it. I actually like this feature because it helps prevent the chance that you might miss a post as you're posting.

I turned it off. It would be better if you could see what was just posted, then you wouldn't have to repeat information. Its a pain in the derriere to have to reload a page to see what was posted. Reviewing my own post means nothing. So I just click post and let 'er rip.

Indeed. Also just as a note to all global moderators, you're still a global moderator just as a secondary group. That way you're color for the amount of posts will be displayed in the user list and your post count rank will be seen.

Also I added an additional group "rookie", for members that have 10+ posts. I mainly did this so I can get a better idea on how many users are between the 0 and 25 post count.

I'll update the FAQ.

Yeah everything else should be the same as it was before. Unfortunately the high ranks are all pretty lonely as you can also see below (second column being the count of users at that rank). :(

Expert  *     8     2000
Egghead *    1    2800
Guru    *    1    3700
Hacker    *    2    4700
Prodigy *    3    6000
Sage    *    1    7600
Genius    *    1    10000

Regarding your color, it's also a blue so it'll look similar, but it is different.

Hey its all cool now, i found the thing where you can change the theme. So ive changed the theme and it looks better then it did with the other forums.
Thanks anyway

Clicking on 'All' in Hidden-->Don's B&G now produces the old IE error for me...
"The page cannot be displayed..... bla bla"

Yesterday clicking on 'All' in the same thread produced a CH generated error.

Can someone else try it?

Possibly because of the size ? ?

Sure there's 20 something pages in there but even this Success thread is already up to 7 pages so if it's a forum glitch it should be looked at.
Title: Re: Success!
Post by: Computer Hope Admin on March 29, 2007, 01:30:58 PM
Yeah I also noticed this when I first fixed this issue and used that as a test thread. I think it's due to the fact that the thread is so long. I don't think there is anything I can do about that, however I'll post something on the SMF forum, it's likely a limitation that can't be avoided.
Title: Re: Success!
Post by: Fed on March 29, 2007, 01:36:06 PM
As Dilbert suggested we can delete the thread and start again but it may also impact on other threads.
Title: Re: Success!
Post by: 2k_dummy on March 29, 2007, 01:38:41 PM
The log shows "no reply..."

Instead of deleting the thread, just lock it. Start a new thread, Don's B&G #2. All the messages, links, etc. will be preserved. Just no new posts.

Everything's coming along very smoothly, I think.  On this end anyway.  Heh.  Thanks for giving so much attention to details, Nathan.  You're awesome.  Other than the weird quoting issue (maybe it's just me), I have no further qualms.  I'm quite pleased with the changes.

I can quote fine.I see the divider fine, I haven't changed template or anything.

I can quote fine too.  BUT it doesn't include your original quotes, Calum.  On YaBB, the things you quoted would also show up in my quote.  Does this make more sense?

Yeah that makes since I actually enabled that thinking it would look better because you wouldn't have quotes going a mile long. But I agree, I could see how this could cause issues / confusion so I'll disable.

Nag, nag, nag... Sorry Nathan but I have another one two. :-[

While in the message box about to type a post I can't get to see all the previous posts for the thread.
Very important for my failing memory to be able to refer back and even quote previous statements made.

EDIT: My email address is showing but it is ticked to 'hide' in my options?
Title: Re: Success!
Post by: Computer Hope Admin on April 01, 2007, 01:22:04 AM
I don't mind.  Yeah it appears as if it only displays the last 15 messages. I briefly looked to see if there was an admin option I could adjust but couldn't see anything. So I'll look around some more in a bit and/or ask SMF about.

Regarding your e-mail it is actually hidden, however not to you. All other members cannot see your e-mail address, in addition I made the forums display no e-mail addresses to guests regardless if they have the option enabled to show their e-mail.

Title: Re: Success!
Post by: 2k_dummy on April 01, 2007, 06:11:29 AM
As previously noted, any oversized image or extra long line will cause this problem. Long url's are particularly bad for it. Forced word wrapping on all pages would have to be used. Otherwise, with long url's, you can use the {url=http://your url}your text{/url} syntax. There is nothing the poster can do with large images except resize them before posting. If the image resides on a different web site, this may be impracticle. If the oversized stuff happens to be the most recent post in a particular topic, it can cause the problem on the index page as well if any portion of that post is displayed there.

Regarding the URL's I'm still trying to find if it's at all possible the above solution would be the best to put the URL in the actual link and then put the title of the link in the url= tag. It does cut log sentences with only English letters, but with url's it doesn't break them up.

All other errors that have been reported that I'm working on are on the first post of this thread.

While working on other mods I did happen to see a mod that will add elipses to URL's I'm having a heck of a time getting any mod to install properly. However, I'll add to list of to-do's. For now just suggest adding the URL in the URL tag and just using a link.

Not sure where you're wanting this but you can actually see who started each post in the list of posts under the "Started By" column.

I'm so glad you fixed that.  It's been bothering me, but I didn't want to say anything.  Ha.  Is there any way to alternate the quotebox colors?  Like, have the main quote be one color and have the sub-quotes be a different color?  It's not a big issue, but I think it would make the quotes easier to read.  I just got back from the San Francisco area earlier today and I'm very tired, so I apologize if I'm not making much sense.

Yeah this is the fault of the wiki template again. It will only display one page of posts so if there are more than one page of posts those posts cannot be viewed. Something that still needs to be addressed. I'll try to get it done as soon as possible. Thanks for pointing out a post with this issue.

Here is another request:

Change the email sending settings in the SMF forum from the default Usr/sendmail to STMP.

Topic replys, moderator reports, etc, are sending a bit slowly, and it seems that whichever system you are using now, gets gunked up every so often.

Usrsendmail (I think thats what its called) is the normal default, and it works well, but its no ideal for the amount of emails processed through this forum.

Yeah, I've got the same setup here (but with text set at Medium) and certain HJT logs will stretch the page for me.  It doesn't bother me, but until Fed said something, I hadn't thought of how bad it might be for anyone with a smaller monitor and/or lower resolution.

Don't want to complain but would it be possible to have a link below you're avatar(Personal text).
Were only the characters who are actually displayed count.
I'll explain myself. (e.g.)
When you type this
Code: [Select]
[url=http://youtube.com/results?search_query=Jonas+Wauters][color=teal]My Skatevids[/color][/url]that only the 12 characters (Of: My skatemovie)count so you can put a link in you're personal text.
Only a small suggestion. Don't even know if it can be done.

In my continuation of cleaning up the stickies in the Other section I'm going to also be removing the sticky on this thread. The tasks that need to be done will not be forgotten or lost. I still have them on my list of things to do but I think a more than 1-year old post doesn't need to remain a sticky for that long. :)
