Title: Computer will not start on Normal mode!
Post by: Radbone on March 31, 2007, 06:38:15 PM
Hi Everyone
Thank you so much for helping...I am writing to you from safe mode with networking. I am on an HP Compaq laptop running Windows XP...Everytime I restart the PC I get the page where it says what mode I would like to start it in...When I try Normal mode or "last good config"...it starts to load then a blue screen appears with words for half a second (i cannot read it) then it goes back to the beginning and starts to load again. This never happened to me...is there any way to fix it fast?
Thank you so much!

To help resolve this issue you'll need to see what the error is on the Blue Screen. To help do this disable the auto restart feature in Windows from safe mode do the following.

   1.  From the desktop right click on My Computer.
   2. Click the Properties option.
   3. In the System Properties window click the Advanced tab.
   4. In Advanced click the Settings button under Startup and Recovery.
   5. In the Startup and Recovery window uncheck the Automatically restart check box.
   6. Click Ok.

Above information and additional information about restarts found at:
http://www.computerhope.com/issues/ch000605.htm

Once you got the blue screen write down any file listed in the error or any other error message that can be used to help identify the cause of the issue. This information can be posted here on the forum or try doing a Google search for it.

In safe mode try to use start with command prompt option, it will give you a list of things that are loaded. Write back about what you see.
The dreadful Mup.sys? Maybe?

Thank you...
So on that blue page it says:
A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent dmagae to your computer.
PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA
If this is the iorst time you've seen this stop error screen, restart your computer. If this screen appears again, follow these steps:

Check to make sure any new hardware or software is properly installed. If this is a new installation, ask you hardware or software manufacturer for any windowsupdtaes you may need.........
If prob. continues, disable or remove any new installed hardware or software. Disable BIOS memory options such as caching or shadowing.
Techinical Information:
***STOP 0x00000050 (0xbf7f0020, 0x00000001, 0x8052f0b7, 0x00000002)

Thats what the page says...also what do you type in once in command prompt on safe mode.
Thanks.

One of the more common reasons for this message is a problem with RAM.
DLoad and run Memtest and let it run a few hours...any errors mean the RAM has gone south.

Thanks for the advice.
I ran the memtest for RAM for about 250% coverage so far- no errors...
any other ideas?
(BTW I am doing this all on safe mode...)
thanks

i dont believe it did
I ran a anti-virus scan on safe mode
i found a trojan hourse- msnetax.dll
I really rather not wipe my computer- i have many important documents and programs...is there a way to get rid of this (i already click delete- but i do not know if that really works)
thanks

List all the protection apps you have installed.
Your AV program might not have found everything...

I believe Symantec AV is the only protection program I have...
Is msnetax.dll causing all this? If so, how do I get rid of it.
thanks

It appears as if that file is associated with some spyware and other malware. I highly recommend you install a spyware protection program such as Windows Defender, boot the computer into safe mode and scan and clean the computer from any spyware.

Windows Defender is free and found at:

DLoad install and update AVG Anti-Spyware From Here[/u] (http://www.ewido.net/en/[u)

Disconnect from the web and re-boot and run it in safemode.

Report back.

DLed it...ran a scan..deleted some adware/spyware.
I rebooted and I still got the Blue screen of death- so once again in Safe Mode...Should I have done/ do something differently?

Before you go any further think about the consequences if, when you're trying to fix the problem, you lose all of your critical data files.

My two cents worth - backup and check the backup files before doing much more even if you go to the trouble of installing the hdd on another pc to backup your files.   There ain't anything worse than eventually repairing an operating system but losing critical data.

Good luck.

So did you backup ALL of your data files as suggested?

Yes, I backed up my C drive. The Windows XP Recovery CD does not work on the laptop. I just opened it and when I try to load it-it says the software doesn't support it. So I cannot repair or even reinstall if I wanted to.
Thx

Do you have the Window XP intallation CD?
If so, try to repair your windows instalation after booting with this CD
(type "r" when the initial options menu appear) .

It sounds like he has a restore CD, not a real Windows CD, so this is impossible.

It sounds like he has a restore CD, not a real Windows CD, so this is impossible.

Which means his options are limited to taking Dusty's advice to backup and using the restore CD to do a clean, Day One install...

WARNING this is going to remove all the data on that machine...
