Title: SHOCKING Experience
Post by: Zylstra on April 04, 2007, 02:26:35 PM
I have a new Dell laptop... I also have a chair (Stating the obvious).

Whenever I am sitting in that chair, using my laptop, I get shocked when holding the laptop.
(The chair will shock you even if you are not holding an object plugged into an electrical outlet)
Is this bad for my laptop?

Are you shuffling around on carpet or wearing silk panties? ;D

Just don't touch any of the ports or connectors. You might want to consider purchasing an electrostatic mat.

lol

The chair is made of some material that just happens to conduct electricity like a power plant!
It is quite annoying.

Even if I am not touching the ports or connections, it still shocks me.

We are thinking (more as a joke) about grounding the chairs with rubber tails like those shopping carts at Albertsons.

How strange.
But most laptops are made from plastic or other materials which do not conduct electricity, so as long as you don't touch any metal parts like connectors it will be fine.

Static discharge can in fact ruin a laptop or any number of electronic devices...i would not use the laptop in that chair at all.

It only takes once...

If you come in contact with let's say the metal portion of a USB jack with a full static charge that static has a direct line straight to the mainboard...who knows what component would take the hit...

Me personally i wouldn't take the chance.

Well, I already touched the headphone jack and got up and got shocked!

Try it with JP-4...Only joking of course!!!

JP-4 is a nonconductive liquid, prone to build up static electricity charge when being moved through pipes and tanks. As it is volatile and with low flash point, the static discharge may cause a fire. An antistatic agent is used as a fuel additive to lower the charge buildup, the flow rates have to be controlled, and all the equipment used has to be electrically interconnected and well grounded.

I've always wondered what JP-4 is... ::)

You have entirely too much time on your hands!

I see street1 has been to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/JP-4.  Actually, JP-4 is a fuel for jet engines in aircraft.

You might be interested in this. A humidifier makes a world of difference.

And if you're wearing silk panties it can be even worse. ;D

A new chair is probably less expensive than a new laptop.  ;)

Ok

I took a white chair out of our library
and dragged the old shock-y one into the library

Problem fixed

This brings back fond memories of a section of our floor (in my old house) that did something similar.  The wires underneath weren't grounded properly or something, touching something metal would often produce a shock or a strange tingly feeling in the fingertips.  After shampooing the carpet once, I went to plug my computer in...  BZZZT!

That, in turn, reminds me of when I first got my PS2.  I went to go plug it in and the outlet literally exploded!

I'm old school, but the simplest solutions are frequently the least expensive.  ;)

Now THAT sounds dammaging.
(We just replaced out fuse box with a breaker box)

A more comfortable chair than this one would be nice. (I personally want a small couch or a fouton...(ignore spelling) since it would fit well in out living area.)

2K thanks for that humidity chart, I knew it made a difference  but not how much, I used to get zapped everytime I went to the cig machine where I worked, but went once in an extended period of cold dry winter weather and the shock I got slammed me into the wall 6 feet from the machine

If I scrape my feet over the carpet and I touch my desk, there is a chance the PC will crash.  :)
