Title: Stumped Cannot Rename Volume label on Hard Drive
Post by: Idiot123 on April 14, 2007, 08:57:43 PM
few years ago when Kazaa first came out I was playing a game with a buddy till 4am & at the time didn't know anything about port forwarding so I just opend my pc up with DMZ.  Since I played till I couldn't see straight went straight to be leaving my machine wide open.

Next morning forgot all about DMZ being open & went right to Kaza  & Downloaded an mp3 file.   Periodically after downloading files & would check to see if file was complete. This time I looked down & the file name was BonJovi.Mp3.VBS

Upon further investigation I found that all of my Mp3 & .Jpg files were named as follows:    .Mp3.vbs & .jpg.vbs    right then & there I knew I was slammed with a virus.    Since I built the PC I figured I would just chalk it up as a loss & reformat the drive to wipe it clean & do a complete fresh install of the os.

I got to the part where it asks you to name the Volume in FDISK but then I saw that the name of the Volume was in characters much like the ones you see on Playing cards.

They Looked like Hearts, Diamonds, Clubs & spades.  To this day I still have the hard drive but no Idea how to clean it: have tried using it as a Master & also as a slave but I cannot find an application to rename the files in DOS sinceI do not have the characters.

I know the Hard Drive was Manufactures in 2003 & made by samsung & spinpoint series model# SP800H  I mostlikely at the time was using Win98se

All I want to do is be able to format the hard drive so I can re-use it again but seems like w/o the heart, diamaond, shaped characters in dos  I cannot rename to Volume so I can then delete the existing Partition & Create new one to Format & do a complete re-install of a new OS.

thanks in advance~
yours truely-

Do you have a Win2000 or XP CD? Use that and delete all the partitions and then format it. You do not need to go through FDISK.

Thanks for the tip, Tried last night after I saw your post & this is the error message I got while trying to install  Windows XP PRo:

"The File ql10wnt.sys is corrupted"  SO I googled it & was trying to run Fdsik again.
when I did it I got another message saying no Fixed Disks present so I tried option #2 which was to go to the manufacturer (Samsung) & download the original tools that came with the Hard Drive to Floppy. Upon running those tools I got the application to run for about 2 seconds then it stopped & so I tried basic dos tools like chdsk, scandisk, & every other tool I could use in the help section of DOS.

tried XP PRo installation again & now it will not even find anything. The newest error message I get is "Remove All Media" & press enter to restart.
