:'( Hi guys!!....I need help. I uninstalled Norton 2007 'cause I thought it was better to re-install it...I cancelled the installation one time and when trying again, it would not. So I went to Symantec.com response site and took the advise to do the foolowing. Click run, and type %temp% and then delete all. I did that but as I restarted, windows XP wouldnot start. It keeps giving me an error window titled 'Enviroment' and the messege says ''Windows can not load the users profilebut has logged you on with the default profile for the system.
Now, when I switch my laptop, it gives me the XP welcome page, and the log on page, But when I click on the Owner tab, the screen goes light blue and nothing. Please help , as I have important documents.

They told you to type %temp% delete all? In where and why?
-
Did you get my mesege, Raptor?

Your first and most important task is to recover your documents not fix an Operating System problem. Once your critical files have been recovered you can safely do whatever you wish with the Operating System, including a reformat/reinstall. If you continue with fixing your Operating System there is the possibility, even if it's just a remote one, that in the process your critical files will be lost.
Recover/backup your files then fix the Operating System.
Recommendation, for what it's worth, dump Symantec/Norton.
Good luck

Thanks Dusty...A Wise advise. .. By the way, why dump Norton & what antivirus do you recommend?

Well, if Symantec really did tell you to do that, that'd be one reason. (We'd still like some documentation on this.) Also, many of us consider Norton to be inferior to some of the free programs. And as you can see, it's very clingy and doesn't like being removed from a computer. Many of us would recommend switching to AVG Free (http://free.grisoft.com/freeweb.php/doc/2).

Yes I did. Emptying your temp folder that way seems a bit risky considering you could end up anywhere that is temp in the name.
Once you made back-ups considering doing a repair installation if Windows still doesn't boot: How to Perform a Windows XP Repair Install (http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htm)

Snap - even the AVG Free version is, IMHO, better than Norton, but that's just a personal opinion having been with Norton and experienced some of the problems Norton can cause. I believe Norton is too resource hungry, gives poor service, especially when the subscription renewal date approaches, and is quite difficult to remove when that time comes. I'm sure others will swear by Norton.
But anyway, in your current position I believe that retrieving your critical files is much more important than repairing a problematical Operating System which can be re-installed fairly easily. Also please test your files once they are backed up, there's nothing worse than finding out later that your backup ain't what you thought it was...
My 2-cents worth.

Definitely dump Norton, and don't even think of Mcafee!! Both of them are craps!! AVG rules!
B.

avg is less resource intense scans better in safe mode and has a higher detection rate
-
I think AVG is a way better choice than Norton.
I wouldn't think that Symantec.com would tell you to delete all temp files, so do you have the exact webpage where it said that? (In my opinion, this looks like an honor code virus... or maybe not.)
Good luck getting your files back (I think System Restore should work, as unlovedwarrior said.)

Thanks a lot guys. The System restore worked and I am backing up my documents...By the way, I tried disk defrtag and here is the report. Do you see anything bad?
Thanks agn.
p.s. If I install server 2003 ('cause I wanna creat a min i lab for my MCSE coarses., will I lose any softwares already installed on my pc?
-
if the software was installed before the date you restore to then no the programs will still be there,
if you reformat then everything will be gone for ever,
if you do a repair install you just replace the missing system files

Here is the defrag report. Do you see anythibg wrong with it?
