Title: Is it DOA? I need a crash cart STAT!
Post by: tamisgem on May 04, 2007, 07:13:26 PM
Opps sorry thought I was back at work for a min lol. Ok I have searched past topics and tried a lot of the info I found on there. So I just need a second opinion before I bury this thing.

I have a Toshiba Satellite running Windows XP Home Version 2002 with service Pk 2. Today I got a new software program and when I tried to load it into my computer nothing happened. So I went into my drive manager and there is the yellow exclaimation mark on there. I checked the properties and it says that

Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing. (Code 39)

Click Troubleshoot to start the troubleshooter for this device

Which of course I did the troubleshooter, checked with Toshiba for driver updates, checked Windows and Microsoft for updates, rolled back my driver and ummmm.. I think thats it. LOL then like the typical air head I can be I decided I would just do a recovery on my system. DUHHH the driver isn't working, I can't back up my system or run the recovery disc. So is it a lost cause? Call the Cyber Morgue?

What drive is the drive manager reporting as faulty ? ?

Code 39 is usually related to CDRom devices...certainly not a reason to trash the machine.

If it is in fact the CD/DVD drive right clik it and select Remove or un-install and re-boot.

Oh darn! I thought I put all the info down, lol was so proud of myself.
It's my DVD/CD-rom driver.
The part that is showing right under the driver says
HL-DT-ST RW/DVD GCC-4243N

Not sure what that is, when I tried to find it through Toshiba it says that there is no such thing.

Thanks Patio, I did as you said and it still isn't working. Wonder how these things do as freesbies!

Is this the original drive that came with the laptop ? ?

If it's over 3 or 4 years old it might be the drive itself that is failing.

First thing to try is to power down the machine, unhook all power and remove both the CD unit and the battery. Let it sit for a few minutes and carefully hook everything back up. Re-boot and see if it works.

If not the only way to find out if the drive has failed would be to try it in another Sattelite or have a shop look at it. I don't recommend a shop they might charge more than it's worth just to test it.

Let us know

Thank you Patio. My laptop is about 2yrs old but still under warranty. LOL I always get the super deluxe warranties when I purchase TV's or computers. So I guess that will be what I'm doing this weekend.

I'm kind of afraid to take the drive out only because I'm afraid of voiding the warranty. Thanks again Patio, I will let you know what happens.

Well just a little update. I took my computer into the Geek Squad and they did something so that my computer would reboot with a disc. So I was able to do a complete restore on my computer when I got home. He said it was the driver software and could have possibly been caused by a virus or spyware, since I didn't add or remove any programs.

At lest now it is working and stuff. I did lose some programs but oh well I will just load them back and start over again. Thank you again for the help!

I agree.

If there's a phone # we can harangue them into telling us the full story...

tamisgem, glad you're fixed up.

But it seems like they will say just about anything.

I agree that they just talk to make themselves sound good a lot of the time. As a matter of fact he was very surprised at the fact that I was able to figure out going to the toshiba site to find out if there was a driver update. LMBO hey I may be a girl (old one too!) and I may go for the sparklie stuff but I can figure basic computer stuff on my own. GESH!

I think I will try to either call Toshiba or someone to find out exactly how my driver was corrupted. If anyone has any other ideas please let me know. I did have to remove a virus about 3 wks ago but when I restored my system I would have thought that would have cleared up my driver if the virus caused it. So it has to be something else.

Thanks again y'all,
