pat...... First , why did you do the system restore ?

I would suggest this:
Run ccleaner .... if you dont have it get it at ...... http://www.ccleaner.com/
It's free.   Don't install the optional yahoo toolber.
Then run the cleaner portion and delete all that it finds. ( the brush icon)
Next , turn off your system restore.
Then go into safe mode ...... and run your anti-virus program and get rid of anything it turns up.
Then if you have it , run Spybot ......... fix anything it finds.
Then run your antispyware program.  (AVG antispyware , A-Squared, Ewido or whatever you use ) remove whatever is found.

Reboot back into normal mode and see how things are ....... If they appear to be better, Turn system restore back on .

Let us know the outcome.

Maybe some details on the hardware involved would be in order as well.

What protection did you have on this machine prior to problems?

What other issues did you have with the machine?

What other issues did you have with the machine?

All we know now is that you have XP and 256 RAM with some of that being used for shared video.

The questions are important as you are part of this process.  ;)
