Title: Ask the Good-Guys a Question
Post by: Jp on May 12, 2007, 11:00:52 AM
Howdy Folks,

It's all I want is a plain and simple answer, . .

When I get a Windows Update, and I know it's in my best interest to Open and Install it, but is there anything wrong with wanting to know what it is ?

Dah ! ! !  ???

If you can't tell me, let me ask you another, . .

If I Install it can I figure out where it is located on MY computer ? ?

Then possibly I can figure out what it is, or should I always trust windows

like a _____________, I left that blank because, I don't want to give

raptor a chance to make one of his witty coments.

Merlin would tell you to uninstall Service Pack2..

I'll just tell you to google for the KB number which can be obtained before and after it is installed.

Either through the update manager or through Software -> Tag show updates.

I couldn't think of anything witty. Try calling me names or become your usual incoherent self.

Well then tell me, why I get this when I uploaded something entirely different to photobucket, I've tried this several times and used different formats, . . .

This is not what I posted !!

What I posted was How Do You Want To Install This Update, . .

My guess is that windows has complete control over what you take Screen Shots of, . . .

Do you have an explanation ?

I can not download the screen shot !!??

I don't quite get what you're so concerned about when it come to Windows Updates.  They're pretty trustworthy.  If it's that big of a deal, set your updates to Manual Installation.  Then when they're ready to be installed, you can select the Custom Install and view descriptions of the various updates.  And if you ever want to remove one for some reason, they come with uninstallers.

O.K.

but I will certainly look into that, however my fine man we are on a completely different question, . .
please tell me if you can how or why, was I not able to d/l the scrsht, which was somehow replaced, by another, ? ? ?

If I am not asking to much.

As CBMatt already said, the best thing to do when you receive updates is to do custom install that way you click on each on of them and read the description at the bottom, whats it for, what they do, etc. Usually if its an update to remove unneeded software its ok, but if something like Update for Outlook Express (I don't use it and don't have it) so just uncheck it and click ok, when asked to not show these updates again put a check mark there, otherwise you will get informed again in a while.

There's a simple answer for this: PEBKAC (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PEBKAC)

OK, . . I swear, when I saved it I named it Windows Update, . .

I changed the name to A-05 and it D/L from Photobucket like above, but I tell you the previous shot was truly what I said it was.

Now, back to raptor's comment, regarding;

I'll just tell you to google for the KB number which can be obtained before and after it is installed.

Either through the update manager or through Software -> Tag show updates.

do you see some identifying numerals ?

What do you mean google for KB number ? , I didn't take my brain steroids this morning like raptor does everyday.

Raptor, you've been taking brain steroids again?!

Jp, choose the Custom Install.  Like I said, it will give you details of the update(s).  These details will also include a KB number that you can research on Google.

OMG, you really don't know what we're referring to by KB number?  Do you sit blindfolded at your computer?  If you've ever, even one time, watched your screen during a Windows update session, you would have seen such update identifying numbers as KB931768 (http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=931768), for example.

And, regarding the screen shot, you have at least two opportunities to verify the screen shot before posting it in the forum.  First opportunity is when you pasted the screen shot into Paint or whatever image editor you're using.  The second opportunity is in photobucket.com.

Oh, . .OK, . . I know what you mean, (identifying numbers as KB931768)

but, sorry I would think it to be a little more servicable if one could not only see this at the time of the download but before it was down loaded, instead of having to go and look it up at the MS web site,

allow me to make comment a little later to you and CBMatt on this, . .

second thought, I'll follow your advice for now.

On the scrsht, I did check it out several times both on in my paint and Photobucket, what I saw was not what it posted to the forum post,
until I changed the name, . . honestly, if you want I will go back and try it again.

Well, I suggest avoiding the name change procedure.  That seems to be where you're getting off track.

I'm not sure you understand,

When I saved this I named it Windows Update, uploaded it to PB, that is where the problem apparently occured, the image was one thing from the upload the download to CH was another,

when I changed the name, it did the right thing, totally unexplainable ?

Just thought it was strange enough for you to want to know about it.

I've posted scores of images from my PB account in this forum; PB makes it about as easy as it can be.  But, in your case, I think we'll have to leave this at "totally unexplainable".   ;)

OK

I also have just realize that my PB account is public, that I did not know and that there are hackers that sometimes use it for their playground, . .

however in this case I'm not sure, I do know how it would have looked had I posted the original scrsht, if I had not previewed it, anyway sometime in the future I will try it again using the same events.

Thanks for listening and believing that sometimes the truth is stranger than fiction !

Jp, I've experienced a similar problem before with PhotoBucket.  I made changes to a picture and re-uploaded it with the same name, and it the original picture kept showing up.  Try deleting the picture on PhotoBucket, clearing out your Temporary Internet Files (or at least the ones related to PhotoBucket), and re-uploading the picture and see if it works after that.

Jp

Did you happen to change the name after you uploaded it ? ?

If so PB would have no way of knowing this...it would carry the original name until you change it at PB...

Twilight Zone Time.

While it's true that anyone can see all your images in Photobucket if they are smart enough to figure out how, which is not very difficult, but they would need the password to make changes, additions, or deletions to your PB images.  And, I'm sure that if hackers were using your PB account for "their playground", the evidence of that would be obvious.

Jp, after 4+ months, you still have not taken the original advice. How would you even assume your lot should get better? Are you here for help or to make bizarre posts and commune with Raptor? Think carefully before answering.

GX1_Man,

Please know that yes it has been awhile, however, remember if you will please, that I have been using the computer for years and never really realized how important maintenace was, I was forced financially, and was not able to reconnect with my ISP, after serveral months I broke out my laptop and in desperation to re-connect my communications with the gov. to submit tech disclosures, to USDHLS, for the reason of procurement solicitations, (not to get personal), I selected AOL because they offered a 90 free trial and I could get back on line, . .

attempting to do that I DL'ed aol service to the laptop and it went zilcho, if you recall, . . .

I then went out to the garage where I am now, and stretched a line across the lawn to the telephone box and got back on using my desk top, where I at one time had my own box T-connection, . .since that time,  . .

I have had the box re-installed and the line across the lawn is no longer used.

I then encountered the trojan problem I did not know I had and that was about the time, I arrived here, and we all met.

Now, before you start divvieing out the solutions, which I believe you have done gracefully, . .I need to tell you that it is apparent, that prior to installing either SP2 or Computer Firewall, virus protection and
malware protections, namely from AOL,(at this time I am going to need to upgrade my RAM, . . .

Therefore, I realize your desires to resolve these issues, of which I will always be greatful, and hope that there may befall me a way to express my gratitude.

Until then let me find out what my computer specs are so that I can hopefully install the RAM update as apparently is needed, which I did not think that I would need, since I have recently, Restored the BIOS.

ASAP I will get myself to Staples, and I will buy the RAM update, and for your piece of mind I will keep my communication in the Off Topics, as much as possible.

and therefore possibly make you a happier person !!

 :D
