I purchased a HP Pavillion dv9310 notebook computer. It has Vista installed on it. I let a family friend use the computer ( I know---a very stupid move!!!). Now my new computer will not start up. It goes through the boot sequence and that is it. The computer seems to die. I tried starting it in safe mode and that does not work.
The computer keeps stopping on a particular driver: \windows\system32\drivers\crcdisk.sys.
I need to know how to prevent this driver from loading and get my system running again.
I think the computer in infected with a virus (what's new).
Please help me!!!!

Don't be too quick to blame your friend; this appears to be a common problem with Vista. Unfortunately, there doesn't seem to be a general solution for it.
Have you tried booting with the Vista DVD?
I'm not sure if Vista has Recovery Console, but you can give it a shot (information here (http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/314058)). If you can, open Recovery Console by pressing F10 or R at the Welcome To Setup screen when you boot with the Windows CD. When Recovery Console opens up, try running chkdsk /r (just type it in and hit Enter). Let us know the outcome.
Do you have another OS disk you can try booting with?

Seems to be a SATA driver issue as per this post from another site:
"You may need to update the drivers for your drives. the .sys reveals that
this is a driver issue.
locate or contact the manufacturer of your device and see if they have and
updated driver for your drives.
Next during the upgrade if asked if you would like to install and third
party drive select F6 or any other key select the option and insert the disk
with the drivers.
This should resolve the issue

I have a XP setup CD. Can I use that to access recovery console. I will have to look real hard for the Vista CD.

Visited the HP site. Unable to find out if there are any update drivers since their instructions are to install one of their programs to see if the computer needs an update. How am I able to do that since the computer won't boot up?
HP is nuts.
Is their another way?

I seriously doubt that HP sent a Vista DVD with the machine. That is not their style.
I assume it is still under warranty. If so, now is the time to use it. THis may be a hardware problem (as well as software) that is probably well beyond your ability to fix. Nor should you have to. ;)
