Title: safe to shut down puter
Post by: bleachycd on July 19, 2007, 01:27:57 AM
I told my daughter I'd ask anyone here if they had any idea why this happens.
When they boot up the puter it does that fine but in a minute or two a popup comes up and says it is now safe to cut off your computer.
I forgot to ask her what kind of puter she has or how old it is.
Thanks for any help.

Does it give you an option to cancel the shutdown or does it just shutdown without you being able to use it?
It could be a virus or another form of malware. Try running some antivirus and anti-spyware software on it.
Many forum members would advise these programs: AVG Antivirus Free, AVG Anti-Spyware, Adaware 2007, and Spybot Search & Destroy
http://us.mcafee.com/ also has a free online virus scanner (no removal)

Also, get back to us on the specs of the computer and everything

Be sure to boot into safe mode when you run the scans. (press F8 while the computer is booting up)

A lot more info on the machine, OS and what happened prior to this would be useful...
