Title: SP2 being read as SP1???
Post by: saytheya on July 28, 2007, 09:30:36 AM
i posted in computer software  (http://www.computerhope.com/forum/index.php/topic,39767.0.html) about a problem i've been having and got sent over here to post a hijackthis log. if anyone could tell me any problems they see with it that would make my computer "send out a signal that i have SP1, instead of SP2." i attached my hijackthis log as a txt document.

Well, you have Viewpoint Manager, which I would get rid of.  It's not necessarily malicious, but it is considered foistware (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/glossary/definition343.html).  Other than that, I'm not seeing anything malicious running on your computer.  Just to be on the safe side, you might want to update your AVG and scan with it in Safe Mode.

Also, you need a firewall.  You're vulnerable without a firewall, so you should look into getting either ZoneAlarm (http://www.zonelabs.com/store/content/catalog/products/sku_list_za.jsp?lid=dbtopnav_za), Kerio Personal Firewall (http://www.sunbelt-software.com/Kerio.cfm), or Comodo (http://www.personalfirewall.comodo.com).  They're all good free firewalls.  Just be sure you only have one installed at a time!  Download the firewall of your choice, disconnect from the internet, disable Windows Firewall, and install your new firewall.

Let me know how the Safe Mode scan goes.

alrighty, i scanned my computer in safe mode with AVG. nothing came up. i downloaded and installed comodo.

how would i remove viewpoint manager?

If you would like to remove it, simply go open up your Control Panel from the Start menu and go to Add/Remove Programs.  Look for Viewpoint in the list and choose to uninstall it.  You should then scan with HijackThis, close all other windows, and check and fix the following entries...

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings,ProxyOverride = *.local
(This is unrelated, but go ahead and fix it anyway.)

O23 - Service: Viewpoint Manager Service - Viewpoint Corporation - C:\Program Files\Viewpoint\Common\ViewpointService.exe

You should then delete the folder C:\Program Files\Viewpoint.  After that, Viewpoint should be no more.  However, it would be a good idea to run through the Cleaner and Issues with CCleaner (http://www.ccleaner.com) (install without Yahoo! toolbar).

uninstalled viewpoint and ran ccleaner through.

are we getting any closer to fixing the problem with SP1/SP2?
Title: Re: SP2 being read as SP1???

in ccleaner go to tools and see if you can uninstall sp2 and then restart and reinstall..

i didn't see SP2 in the list in CCleaner under tools. would it be listed as anything other than (windows?) service pack 2? i didn't see anything for SP1, if there should be.

is uninstalling SP2 going to do anything to the way my computer runs until i reinstall it?

Sorry, saytheya, I must have missed your last reply.  Running Windows XP without SP2 isn't recommended because it's not as safe.  However, uninstalling it and then reinstalling it may be worth a shot.  Check this page for removal instructions...
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/875350

If you don't find Windows XP Service Pack 2 in your uninstall list, give the Use the hidden $NtServicePackUninstall$ folder steps a try.  You should then reinstall SP2...

well...i went to http://support.microsoft.com/kb/875350 and tried to remove it through add/remove programs, wasn't there, but we already knew that. then i tried the $NtServicePackUninstall$ folder...and it didn't work. i got this error:

should i try the system restore step?
Title: Re: SP2 being read as SP1???
Post by: CBMatt on August 06, 2007, 08:29:46 PM
This is an odd one.  Although HijackThis shows you as having SP2, everything else seems to suggest that it's not on your computer.  I haven't seen this problem before and I have to wonder if maybe it wasn't fully/properly installed.  Have you tried the SP2 installation page to see what happens?

You can try the System Restore steps, but keep in mind that it will remove any programs installed after the date you restore to.  For example...if you go back one month, you will lost all programs installed in the last month.  Personal files/data will be left alone, however.

i tried going to the microsoft page to download SP2, but it brings me to the update page. is there a direct link to the page where i can download SP2?

would talking to someone from microsoft do anything? although, whenever i call tech support with problems, it seems that they tend to not have a clue about what to do.

Give this link a try...
http://go.microsoft.com/?linkid=3646727

If you still have trouble, you might want to order a CD (just pay for shipping...about US$3)...

Title: Re: SP2 being read as SP1???

the 34 updates were under "express (high priority)." i tried having the first two on the list and they failed.

enter chkdsk /f (notice the space between the k /f)

press ok

a box will open enter y and press enter

then restart, let the scan run at the beginning and try the updates

i ran ccleaner and did the issue scan until nothing came up, then tried installing a couple updates and they failed again.

after restarting, am i supposed to scan with ccleaner again or was something supposed to scan automatically after typing in chkdsk /f?
Title: Re: SP2 being read as SP1???
Post by: unlovedwarrior on August 07, 2007, 01:19:09 PM
no when you enter chkdsk /f a box will come up. and ask you if you want it to run at reboot. press y for yes then press enter. then reboot

Do you have a shiny CD that says Microsoft XP all over it...complete with holograms ? ?

If so go to Start/Run and type in sfc /scannow and hit Enter...let it run til it finishes.

When that's done log back onto the update site and see how it goes...

Let us know.

You can borrow one as long as it's the same version you are running...i.e. XP SP2 Pro/Home....this needs to match exactly for it to work.

i don't have anyone to borrow one from, they all have newer (vista) or older OS.

i know what my friends have for their OS and everyone else doesn't have a computer. i check with my friends with computer problems before i go into forums.

this are the systems of the people whose discs i'd have access to:
XP home edition v. 2002 SP2
XP home edition v. 2002 SP1
XP home edition v. 2002 SP1a
XP professional v. 2002 SP2
vista

i have:
XP media center edition v. 2002 SP2

so any other suggestions?

I'm assuming you run XP. Which language is your os in?

if you go to my original post in computer software,  (http://www.computerhope.com/forum/index.php/topic,39767.0.html)it has all my OS and computer information. yes it is in english.

XP home edition v. 2002 SP2
XP professional v. 2002 SP2

One of these could possibly work.  Media Center isn't much different from standard XP; it just comes with extra programs.  The OS is essentially the same.  I could be wrong, but I believe yours is XP Pro (Media Center commonly is).  I have the same version of Windows as you (WinNT 5.01.2600), and although mine is also Media Center, it is technically XP Pro.  I'd say it's worth a shot.

If it doesn't work out, you could always give 1-800-MICROSOFT a call and hope you get someone who knows what the problem might be.

You could try re-installing service pack 2, and see if it helps. You can download the english version setup from the below link.

i got WindowsXP-KB835935-SP2-ENU.exe off of the microsoft website and tried to install SP2 and it failed to install  :'(

i called microsoft and i talked to one person who said that it wouldn't cost me anything to get tech support and then i got to tech support and they said they'd charge me $59 for support. they couldn't guarentee that they'd fix the problem either. (they reimburse you if they can't fix it, which is good, but i don't have $$ right now.)

if i get an xp pro cd, am i going to lose my personal files and the programs that came with media edition. i think i can get an xp pro cd.

If you install regular XP Pro instead of Media Center, you should be able to keep your personal files, but you will lose your programs.  Either way, you should back up all important data, just to be on the safe side.

hmmm....this seems like a tricky one.

let's just take a brief moment to review.

1. you can't uninstall sp2
2. you can't install any of the updates from microsoft support web

is there anything else i've missed out?

oh..3. and you don't have a windows disc right?
Title: Re: SP2 being read as SP1???

Title: Re: SP2 being read as SP1???

no, i have never said someone gave me this computer. i bought it with my own money..which i'm still paying off actually. i've never been given a computer...

i ran AVG, spybot, and ad-aware two nights ago and they didn't come up with anything.

JXY...are you going somewhere with all of these questions?

saytheya, those friends of yours with XP Home/Pro SP2 don't have their CD's?  Did you ever try calling Microsoft?  You can also ask them about sending you a CD.
Title: Re: SP2 being read as SP1???
Post by: JXY on August 23, 2007, 02:47:37 AM
of course im going somewhere.

saytheya didn't have a windows disc. that happens when someone has given you a computer. and i remember someone saying that they had recieved the computer from someone else. guess i got mixed up with a different topic.

Which brings me to my next question, what type of store did you buy it from.

Because in some places in china, if you buy a computer from a store, it could be just a small street shop.

And unlike larger electronics stores, these smaller shops don't give you the windows disc.
Title: Re: SP2 being read as SP1???
Post by: saytheya on August 23, 2007, 05:29:51 PM
JXY: as far as i know, new computers aren't given with OS cds anymore. my compaq came with restore cds but no XP cd. i'm usually pretty good about keeping all the papers and cds that come with my computers in a safe spot.

I have never bought a computer "off the street." i don't even trust computer stores to fix my computer..but i also had a bad experience with one so that doesn't help. i bought my compaq from a store similar to walmart and my dell from dell.

CBMatt: i called microsoft to see if they would give me tech support, but i haven't asked them to send me a cd yet. my friend is asking around to see if she can find one. so i'm waiting it to be a last resort situation.

I could be wrong, but I believe they'll ship out the proper CD for only the cost of shipping.  Just don't quote me on that one.

and if you're not careful, you could end up buying a pirated copy of windows.

it happened to me once, and i never bought comps from street shops again.

because you're running a pirated copy of windows, the microsoft support site won't be able to verify whether you're OS is genuine or not. THerefore, all updates will fail. (it happened to me).

and also, things like SP2 won't install properly. (happened to me)

and in the end, i had to re-install windows using a genuine version of windows.

(other symptoms include : unable to access cmd or task manager).

I think thats common sense though ....... i bought parts from street makrets before ..... and let me be the 1st to say its all ripped -off junk ...... if you do regular virus scans etc .... you can actually pick up the patch that cracks x-p , i have about 6 or 7 diffrent x-p serials , that where given to me by a street salesmen ... now they all work , but there not legit ..... they where wrote on a piece of paper etc..... and i know its illegal to sell the codes out side of the microsoft products , he sold me the orginal cd , but the code was on paper ....... he gave me so many because he thought they might not work , that speaks for itself ........

Sorry for the input saytheya, I confess to not reading this thread all the way through (it's very long) and I assumed from the previous posts we were dealing with a pirated copy of XP.
I'll keep quiet now :-X but continue to watch 8)
