How do you change icons so it corresponds with the Program it is defaulted with? For instance in this picture I use Mozilla Firefox for these .htm documents, but the icon is an IE icon. How do you change it so that it shows a firefox icon?

Right clik an HTML file and select "open with" then check the box saying always open this type with Firefox.

I just tried that and it still has the IE icon.

Re-boot for the changes to take effect.

or, you can right click > properties > and you can change the program you want to open it with.

Do you have Firefox set as your default browser? I suspect not.

I did reboot and it did not change.

I did that and chose Firefox and it still had the IE icon.

hmm.....wait a sec.
once you've changed the file so that it opens with firefox, if the icon still doesn't change, then all i can say is i can't help you.
i remember this happened to me before, sometimes the icon just won't change for some mysterious reason.
perhaps someone else might know the solution?

Try this then.
In Windows Explorer select "Tools" and "Folder Options..."
Select the "File Types" tab and select the htm extension
Click the "Advanced"button and click "Change icon..."
In the new window select "Browse" and find your firefox executable.
(By default it is located at C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe)
Now select the icon you want
That should change it.

If it doesn't you need to DLoad and run HijackThis and post a log in the Virus and Spyware section...

I'm not 100% sure but I think those icons are IE icons because you were using IE when you downloaded the files.
I think if you downloaded the same files with Firefox they would show as Firefox icons. (I didn't try it)
Interested to see what others think about this.

Shouldn't matter what you've downloaded the files with Fed. Windows controls the icons associated with file types not the programs. Besides if icons we're assigned by the program you downloaded them with, shouldn't a downloaded movie file also have a browser icon then?

You're right of course Deerpark and your previous reply should solve the OP's problem. :)

I had a similar problem, different symptoms. I am on AT&T/Yahoo, and had the AT&T Self-Support tool....I found the right button on there to click, and it went to work, saying changing default browser to Internet Explorer. My problems disappeared.

Yes it should
Just wanted to add - Instead of restarting for changes to take affect when changing icons or if your icons suddenly become messed up TweakUI (http://windowsxp.mvps.org/tweakui.htm) lets you rebuild the icon cache so changes take affect immediately.
And for those stubborn icons you can use Iphile (http://www.freeware-guide.com/OldGoodFreeware/IconPhile.html) to change filetypes not found in folder options & also other icons like hard drives/recycle bin etc etc
