Title: "free dos" message when booting
Post by: aa on November 27, 2004, 03:47:27 AM
i have just bought a new computer(amd2600) and installed win2000pro. When i start the computer i get a message"free dos" and it stops there. if the win 2000 disk is in the cd drive it starts up fine. Also if i press f11 on startup and choose the hard drive it starts up fine. I hope this makes sense. Please help.

If the computer is new - return it and have the store or salesperson take a look at it.

...And...You put Freedos on the other partition?  What did you use to create the partition?

If the computer is still under warranty, I suggest you return it before you violate the terms of warranty..

I bought my pc from a retailer who sold me the pc without the op(its a small retailer and i think he does build is the pc for sale) as i had win2k already and i got the system $170Aus cheaper which being an 18yo female uni student is a lot of money to me. I got it home, installed win2k and everything was fine till i tried to start the pc up later on. Thats when it failed to load windows and stopped with the "freedos_".  However, as i said it will load windows if the windows cd is in the drive. As was explained to me earlier freedos is a program. I am ignorant of most things pc but do i have to remove freedos and if so how.

search msofts site for the win2k installer.....or change the bios options..del key on boot..change the boot sequence to boot for cdrom ....win2k will ask you to format etc the  drive and it will ask you for the product key...the freedos is on the first partition you need to format it and partiton it...what happened to the old hard drive with win2k on it...
