Title: outlook 2003 disappearing messages

sometimes after i read a message in my inbox, and then close out my email, when i go back into my email the messages are no longer there. i look in every folder and they are not there. i look in permanently deleted in tools, and it's not there. i didn't do anything except read and close out and they're gone. how can i get them back?
