Title: Windows virtual memory minimum too low..
Post by: C.C.2020 on November 08, 2007, 03:53:45 PM
I think you guys were right about my computer memory, because after I installed webcam software, it said that "windows is increasing your memory paging file" then became really slow..lol so the other day I ran defrag on the C: drive, and it succesfully defragged all but a few files..and now it seems to be fine. Why does Windows run out of virtual memory, and If  I install new software how do I prevent it from happening again? :)

What version of Windows do you have?  How much RAM do you have?

Quite likely, adding memory to your computer would prevent such messages or reduce the frequency of occurrence.

120 MB of RAM
128MB, maybe? If it's true. I'd be really, really low.

No it's true!!! it says 120 mB of RAM in my system properties!!!!  :o

Well, whatever it is, it's low. You need to get more RAM, and many of your problems will be gone.
I'd suggest, at least 512MB, 1gig would be nice.

Travel to Crucial.com and enter your system specs....this will tell you exactly what type of RAM you should go shopping for...

For best result set the value of the initial size and maximum size of your virtual memory to be the same.

Windows uses three kinds of memory.  You've got the cache memory which is actually on the CPU itself, which is very, very fast.  Then you've got the RAM, which is a tad slower, but is where most of your programs reside when running (because the cache is so small).  Then you've got "virtual memory," which is really just harddrive space that Windows uses when you run out of RAM.  The problem with virtual memory is that it is REALLY, REALLY SLOW.  So any time you run out of RAM, it spills over into virtual memory, and any time it does that, any any time it has to pull something out of virtual mem, your computer takes a noticable performance hit, because of how relatively slow it is.

Windows XP needs a minimum recommended 128 or 256 megs of ram, I forget which, JUST TO RUN WINDOWS.  So in your case, without really doing much of anything at all, you're already using virtual memory, and all your programs will load in that.  When windows creates virtual memory, it allocates a single, large chunk of harddrive space for this purpose -- it's not fragmented like your other programs can be.  So if the largest, defragmented chunk of free space you have is, say, 500 megs, that's the biggest your virtual memory can be.  If after you defrag, you have a 1500 meg space, then that's as big as your virtual memory can be.  Windows can adjust the size of the virtual memory as needed, but obviously can't do any more than what you have on your harddrive.

While it's always recommended to have at least 10% of your harddrive empty for virtual memory, a larger harddrive will NOT be as effective at speeding up your computer as buying more RAM will be.  1 gig of ram is rather cheap now (50 bucks or so) and will give your computer plenty of breathing room.

I have 2gigs of ram and have my pagefile running @ 1gig or 1024mb, seems to be ok with this ratio!

As a rule of thumb: VM size = 2.5 x RAM

For windows XP, 512 mb of ram will do you good. In windows vista, 1gb will do you goo... but if you do more memory intensive stuff like playing games or running apps, get 2gb.

And for memory, try to get the fastest speed your computer can handle. For example, get PC3200 or PC4000 IF your motherboard accepts only ddr memory. Faster ram speeds are comptible with motherboards claiming to use only lower speeds.

Mix and matching of different speeds and memory amounts do not matter usually, except for certain special cases.

I've always used RAM X 1.5 = VM...

Anything over 1G for a pagefile is wasted...unless you run Autocad 24 hours a day...

thanks for the helpful info!!
and..another question, why would my computer have such little Ram..120 MB in the first place? hehe  :) the usual minimum is 128? right?

There is no such a thing as minimum RAM.
Depending on Windows version, computer were coming with different sizes of RAM.
If I remember correctly, many Windows XP computers had 128MB of RAM, like many basic Vista computers come with 512MB of RAM, which is obviously not enough to run Vista properly.
Why does your computer read 120MB?
Where are you getting this reading from?

His vid-card is probably borrowing 8MG of RAM...

I think you all might find this new info useful; i found after digging around in system properties:
Total physical memory: 128 MB
Available phyical memroy: 10.39 mB
Total virtual memory: 2.00GB
Available virtual memory:1.96 Gb
Pagefile: 319.11MB ;D

AHA !

At any rate you would do that machine and yourself a favor to add more RAM...it's relatively inexpensive right now.
Travel to crucial.com and enter your system specs and it will tell you exactly what type your system likes...
You can then shop around for the best deal.

I don't think, this is the best advice. VM is far from being as fast as RAM.

Seems fairly obvious Patio, in this day and age if he's only got 128 megs of physical ram he NEEDS the 2 gigs of virtual.

What's not fairly obvious in this day and age is running 128Mg of RAM which is where my question came from...

I'm wondering, what do you use your computer for?  For my purposes 128 megs of ram would be like putting cement shoes on a swimmer.
