Sometimes I turn on my computer and it goes really slow, so I turn it off and restart it. Then it's fine. Pretty much every other time I start it up its slow so I don't know why it does that. anyone have a solution?
-
With the vast amount of info provided this may take awhile to diagnose...
-
well i dunno what to say, it just gets slow, nuthing happens.
Windows Xp Home
-
Do you have many icons show on your right-hand taskbar (include hidden ones)? Also, if you have Zone Alarm Suite or ZoneAlarm firewall installed then it could be the problem. One of my 3 computers, I installed Zone Alarm Suite and it was ver very slow whenever I turn on power and load a program, especially game. It took me 15 - 20 minutes to load from Turn on to loading game (SilkRoadOnline).
-
yeah i have nine icons there altogether but i dont have zone alarm ar really any firewall for that matter
-
ar really any firewall for that matter
This may be where your problem started, altogether. Who knows what do you have on your computer by now...
Start here:
http://www.computerhope.com/forum/index.php/topic,46313.0.html
Read post #1 - do nothing. In post #2, skip Step #1.
Post all logs at Computer Viruses and Spyware forum.
-
Try this simple steps first.
1. Clean all the junks from your computer by using Disk Cleanup.
Start ---> All Program ----> Accessory ----> System tools -----> Disk Cleanup.
Disk Cleanup ----- > Select C: or whatever drive you installed OS -------> OK ------- >
Check all checkboxes ------> OK.
Clean up your drive(s) at least once a week. Don't delete any log file.
2. Defrag your disk. Make sure you have enough room in your Hard Drive. (At least 50 - 75% Free)
Start ---> All Program ----> Accessory ----> System tools -----> Disk Defragmenter ------>
Select C: -----------> Click Defragment button.
If the above steps aren't help then download a trial version of Tuneup Utility 2007
http://www.tune-up.com/products/tuneup-utilities/
I hope this program can help you clean up all those dead links that slow down your computer.
If nothing solves the problem then try to remove all icons from the right hand taskbar.
Start ---> Run ----> Enter: msconfig ------> OK ----> General tab: Click "Selective Startup". (Be sure everything there checked and select.)
Startup tab: Uncheck all those checkboxes except anti-virus, spyware, and firewall programs -----> Click Apply ------> OK ---------> Close ------> Restart.
Make sure you are not working on anything in your computer. If you do, Save it, before Restart your computer.

do you want me to post the log from SUPERAntiSpyware?well here it is anyway....
Heck ...i'm still waiting on you posting the basics such as machine, OS, and what happened prior to this etc.
Oh wait you did post the OS...
-
lol ok... machine... that would be a HP Pavilion a1213w yeah thats all i know. i got it for christmas from i think walmart 2 years ago. I havent added new hardware or anything so its still as it came. No idea what happened before this, its been doing it for a while now, i dont even remember when it started.
did the disk cleanup earlier...
doing the eset online scanner now...
also I dont have 50% of my HDD free so i didnt bother with defrag. crappy HDD came with the computer is only 67GB. I have 21GB Free now.
AMD Sempron sticker on the front of computer too if that helps lol. i know next to nothing about hardware, im more into software
-
I need two other logs...
-
that would be a HP Pavilion a1213w yeah thats all i know
Hold Window key, and hit Pause/Break key. It'll tell you.
-
I need two other logs...

-
Cool...Now HJT.
-
and HJT...
[saving space - attachment deleted by admin]
-
OK, sir...
No antivirus, no firewall listed. Do you have at least Windows firewall up?
You're putting your computer in a great danger, and I don't want to see your problems again, unless you start protecting your computer.
Open HJT again, put a checkmark next to:
- O9 - Extra button: Run IMVU - {d9288080-1baa-4bc4-9cf8-a92d743db949} - C:\Documents and Settings\HP_Owner\Start Menu\Programs\IMVU\Run IMVU.lnk (file missing)
Click "Fix checked" button.
Other then that, your HJT log is clean, but you have to remember how much stuff was removed by two other programs.
Now...
Download:
- AVG free: http://free.grisoft.com/
- free Comodo firewall: http://www.personalfirewall.comodo.com/
- free a-squared: http://www.emsisoft.com/en/software/free/
Disable Windows firewall, IF you had it ON.
Install three above programs.
Be good, from now, on.
-
ok...im downloading them now. will i have to like, run scans with these every night or anything like that?
-
Not at all. All three, by default, will update themselves automatically every day, to keep your computer safe.
Just make sure, you don't change any settings, preventing them from doing so.
With Comodo, you'll have to be patient, because at the beginning a lot of its pop-ups, asking you for some permissions. Comodo will learn, and with time, you'll see less, and less pop-ups.
-
lol sounds like a pain but if it keeps my computer out of trouble i guess its worth it... thanx broni.
-
You're welcome...
You can't survive without protection like that. It's that simple.
-
it makes my computer very slow though... ehhhh... i kinda liked being unsafe lol.
-
It doesn't matter, slow, or not. You have to be safe. If you'll keep getting more crap, because of no protection, your computer will be even slower.
Now, let's clean it little bit more...
1. Download, and install CCleaner: http://www.ccleaner.com/
2. Read CCleaner instruction from here: http://www.jahewi.nl/ccleaner/ccleaner.html, and run CCleaner
-
This thread started with a slow machine...i doubt after all that's been done it's actually slower than it was.
Have you considered adding some RAM ? ?
-
i ran CCleaner last night, should i do it again? and yeah more ram would be nice. about how much is it?
-
Right now it's about the least expensive upgrade you can do to a machine...
-
wow nice. i was thinking about a new hdd but im not sure now
-
i thought you said they were cheap! $140 for a gig from best buy! i just sold my ds for $60, i dont have money for ram lol
-
$140 for a gig from best buy
This is way excessive. I'm sure, if you look around, you'll find 1 gig for about $70. Check crucial.com.
-
$70 is still expensive for a kid who has no possible way to get a job or even to earn allowance. anyway, I'm pretty sure that its only getting slower... piece of crap. it seems like its slow every time i turn it on now. like slower than when i first did the firewalls and w/e. i have installed 2 things since then, Firefox and my lil brother did some pirates of the Caribbean game.
-
What are your computer specs?
-
pffff *censored* if i know. and *censored* if i know how to find out. all i know is AMD Sempron 3000+ 1.81GHz, 896MB of RAM. and my hdd is like 67Gb or something. i cant check because i was trying and it took like half an hour and My Computer hasn't loaded.lol i dont know anything about the specs other than that.
-
Your specs look OK.
Windows reinstall, I guess, that's what's left.
-
oh god.thats what it has come down to. I'm going to lose my guitar pro. crap. other then that i don't mind losing everything. pfff if im even allowed to do this to my computer. with my parents im probably not allwed to. so if i can you got like a tut or something cause i dunno how to do it.
-
Here's one:
http://www.computerhope.com/issues/ch000647.htm
-
Do you have Windows XP CD, to start with?
-
yeah... I'm pretty sure i don't. I think I know somebody who might.
-
I took another look at your HJT log, and we may try couple more things, before you go for reinstall.
Lets start with all O24 entries, which may make your desktop look nice, but they're clogging your system for sure.
Open HJT, checkmark all O24 entries, click on "Fix checked" button.
Restart computer, and I'll have more options for you.
-
Run HJT again, and checkmark these:
- O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [HPHUPD08] c:\Program Files\HP\Digital Imaging\{33D6CC28-9F75-4d1b-A11D-98895B3A3729}\hphupd08.exe
- O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [HPBootOp] "C:\Program Files\Hewlett-Packard\HP Boot Optimizer\HPBootOp.exe" /run
- O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [HP Software Update] C:\Program Files\HP\HP Software Update\HPWuSchd2.exe
- O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [TkBellExe] "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Real\Update_OB\realsched.exe" -osboot
- O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe" -atboottime
- O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [MSMSGS] "C:\Program Files\Messenger\msmsgs.exe" /background
- O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [ctfmon.exe] C:\WINDOWS\system32\ctfmon.exe
- O4 - HKUS\S-1-5-18\..\Run: [ctfmon.exe] C:\WINDOWS\system32\ctfmon.exe (User 'SYSTEM')
- O4 - HKUS\.DEFAULT\..\Run: [ctfmon.exe] C:\WINDOWS\system32\ctfmon.exe (User 'Default user')
(If you don't use any other language, but English, in Office XP, check the above THREE entries, as well; to prevent ctfmon.exe from being a startup, you need to disable it; here it's how: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;282599)
- O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [SUPERAntiSpyware] C:\Program Files\SUPERAntiSpyware\SUPERAntiSpyware.exe
- O4 - S-1-5-18 Startup: LimeWire On Startup.lnk = C:\Pics-n-such\stuff\moosik\LimeWire.exe (User 'SYSTEM')
- O4 - .DEFAULT Startup: LimeWire On Startup.lnk = C:\Pics-n-such\stuff\moosik\LimeWire.exe (User 'Default user')
- O4 - .DEFAULT User Startup: LimeWire On Startup.lnk = C:\Pics-n-such\stuff\moosik\LimeWire.exe (User 'Default user')
Remember, by checking the above entries, we don't uninstall any of them, we just prevent them from running as startups.
- O4 - HKUS\.DEFAULT\..\RunOnce: [RunNarrator] Narrator.exe (User 'Default user')
- O4 - HKUS\S-1-5-18\..\RunOnce: [RunNarrator] Narrator.exe (User 'SYSTEM')
Narrator is a light-duty screen reader utility packaged with Microsoft Windows 2000, Windows XP and Windows Vista. Narrator reads dialog boxes and window controls in a number of the more basic applications for Windows.
Do you use it? If not, ckeckmark the above two entries, as well.
Restart computer. Post new HJT log.
-
well this boot seemed faster...
but the 024's came back... i did check and fix them

Download Combofix.exe(http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/Beta/ComboFix.exe) to your desktop.
Double click combofix.exe, and follow the prompts.
A window will open with a warning. Type "1" (and Enter) to start the fix.
When the scan completes it will open a text window.
Please attach that log back here together with a fresh HJT log.
Caution - do not touch your mouse/keyboard until the scan has completed. The scan will temporarily disable your desktop, and if interrupted may leave your desktop disabled. If this occurs, please reboot to restore the desktop.
Combofix will automatically save the log file to C:\combofix.txt
-
well...sorry it took a while. My Computer was taking a while to shut down so i played a song on guitar hero and got sidetracked lol.

Go Start>Run, type in:
regedit
Click OK.
Registry editor will open.
Go File>Export, and save your registry to known location.
Now...
Navigate to:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Desktop\Components
You'll see numeric subkeys starting, in your case, with the number 10, like this:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Desktop\Components\10\
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Desktop\Components\11\
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Desktop\Components\12\
...up to 29
Right click on each numeric subkey (10-29), and click Delete
Restart. Post new HJT log.

Nice ;D
Did you follow instructions from here: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;282599
to prevent ctfmon.exe from starting, because I still can see it:
- O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [ctfmon.exe] C:\WINDOWS\system32\ctfmon.exe
How is your computer doing overall?
After all these changes, you may want to run CCleaner again.
-
what microsoft progam am i trying to disable in the add or remove programs?
-
Did you go to my link, and actually read that article?
-
well i was and it says click change on the office program you are trying to disable but i dont know which one to do.
In the Currently installed programs list, click to select Microsoft Office XP product, where Office XP product is the name of the specific Office product being used.
-
You don't have any Office product installed?
How is your computer doing?
-
i don't think so. well we do have trials but we haven't activated them so i guess they are installed. The computers actually running at a pretty normal speed. its kinda nice.
-
I'm glad.
Go Start>Run, type in:
msconfig
Click OK.
Click Startup tab.
See, if ctfmon.exe is there. If so, uncheck it.
This is actually very minor issue, but it'd be nice to get rid of it.
-
well i when i tried it gave me an error and said i may have to be logged on as an admin (i am) and i clicked ok and it closed and asked if i wanted to rrestart my computer.
yeah Im satisfied with the speed now.
-
Im satisfied with the speed now.
I'm happy, you're satisfied.
-
when I turned my computer back on today the system config utility came up and said it was in diagnostic or selective mode and then the MSconfig itself poped up. should I check the box that says dont show this message again?
-
should I check the box that says dont show this message again?
Yes. That pop-up is normal.
-
