Title: Windows 2000 Defrag problem
Post by: RhythmJohn on January 30, 2008, 01:48:48 PM
Greetings.....I am trying to defrag my C drive, and keep receiving a message that only 2% of my 15% free space is available for use by defrag.  I've moved, or deleted everything I can, and still don't understand what could be causing my free space to be used by some unknown factor.  The drive is only 2.8 G, and was designed to hold only my Windows 2000 Pro operating system.  It is part of a cabled network.  Any ideas?

Thanks, John

Some ideas to look at are things like running diskcleanup and making your swap file smaller or even better moving it to another drive will help.

Hi..Thanks for replying!  I run disk clean up a gazillion times.....How do you move the "swap file", and, well, what is the "Swap file"?????

How much free space is on the drive ? ?
Dis-connect from the Network and run it in safe mode and see if this makes a difference...

15% is available, but not for use by defrag.  This is what I don't understand!  I'll try safe mode, and see what happens....Thanks

Try this article.

I would say moving the swap file only masks the problem for a while, which could be not enough memory.  How much Ram do you have installed?

The swap file i don't believe has anything to do with this issue...
DLoad and run the diagnostics from the drive manuf. website and post the results.

What does My Computer say about hard drive size, and free space?
