Man win98SE is old upgrade to XP. did you get a disc with your external HD? 98 needs drivers to since it doesnt support plug n play oh some old mainboards dont support high volum of space like 100 gig.

1.  You should be able to use the "external USB Acom Data USB 2.0 100 GB hard drive" on your Windows 98SE system.  The www.acomdata.com website indicates that their drives are sold with a CD containing the necessary drivers (and are compatible with both USB 1.1 and 2.0 ports).  You may also download the necessary drivers from their site:

    http://www.acomdata.com/scripts/downloads.asp (http://www.acomdata.com/scripts/downloads.asp)

They have a limited selection of 100 GB drives, so I'm guessing you're looking for "Device Driver for External Hard Drives - USB 2.0 (Version 5.16 for Windows 98)"; but only you can determine that.

    http://www.acomdata.com/customer_support/hd-support.html (http://www.acomdata.com/customer_support/hd-support.html)

2.  Windows 98SE does not provide native support for most USB devices (exception is USB keyboard and mice using legacy USB BIOS support).  For other USB devices, you'll need to install a suitable driver.  These drivers are provided by the manufacturer of the device.

3.  General Installation Procedures for Windows 98 SE (check their user manuals if you want procedures from AcomData).

     a.  Install the USB 2.0 driver for the external hard drive.
     b.  Reboot the computer (on general principle for Windows SE operating system)
     c.  Connect "b" connector of USB cable to the external hard drive.
     d.  Connect power to the external hard drive and turn power on.
     e.  Connect "a" connector of USB cable to USB port (on computer - preferably a USB 2.0 port on back).
     f.  Device should be automatically detected and configured.

The reason you install the driver and power on the external hard drive before connecting it to the computer is so the operating system can detect the type of device connected (device tells operating system what it is when asked) and find a suitable driver (because you've already installed the driver).

Your device is probably backward compatible with a USB 1.1 port, but it will be slow.  So slow (for a 100 GB device) that you may think the device is hung.  Really should be using a USB 2.0 port on the Windows SE computer.

Your info worked well but it says for WindowsSE ver 5.16 and I have ver 4.10 how do I upgrade to ver 5.16?

The Pentium processor III  is fast enough according to the sources I have read from ACOM.   any other help would be great.  You hit the make and model dead on good obs...

Okay then I am Lost because that still does not recognize it... I thought there was a version difference.

the HDD does work on another computer so I know it is functional.  When I installed the driver it did not register when I put the usb in.  is there a special way I don't know about to install the driver?  I mean I understand how computers work and have had lot's of experience installing drivers.

I really want to thank you for your help!

1.  File System.  Is it possible the external hard drive was "formatted" with a file system that is not native (foreign) to Windows 98 SE?

Was it formatted on a Mac system?  Do you know which file system it was formatted with?  Have you successfully accessed the drive from any other Windows system after it was last formatted with a file system?

Windows 98 SE has native support for the FAT (FAT16) and FAT32 file systems.  If your external hard drive was formatted with a different file system you'll need third party software to access it directly.

2.  What is your "immediate" goal here?

Do you just want to transfer (read-only) some files to the Windows 98 SE computer from the Mac or external hard drive (one time deal)?  Or do you want the ability to use your external hard drive (with its files) on any personal computer at any time (Mac, Windows, Linux)?

3.  Does not recognize it.  Can you provide exact text of any message indicating the external hard drive is not recognized?  What are the symptoms?  Does device manager list it anywhere (possibly as an unknown device)?
