Title: System taking too much of RAM !
Post by: rajkochi on February 11, 2008, 05:15:26 AM
Hi
My system is consuming too much of memory without starting any applications other than Firefox. On the task bar are, firewall, AVG to be on main side.

OS: XP sp1

Below are the details:
CPU Type AMD Duron, 1600 MHz (12 x 133)
Physical Memory:
Total 191 MB
Used 166 MB
Free 25 MB
Utilization 87 %

Swap Space:
Total 515 MB
Used 247 MB
Free 267 MB
Utilization 48 %

Virtual Memory:
Total 706 MB
Used 413 MB
Free 292 MB
Utilization 59 %

Physical Address Extension (PAE):
Supported by Operating System Yes
Supported by CPU Yes
Active No

Is this normal?  Or is there something I can do to free some more RAM for my system to run applications faster...

Your machine is a little under powered. I would add RAM and upgrade to XP SP2.

Add 256mb ram or more and your computer will feel much faster.
And like Spoiler said, upgrade to SP2.

Hi
Thanks for the replies...

Is SP2 taking less memory than SP1?

Is there a way to free up RAM for the applications to run smoothly?

SP2 adds updates to make your computer run better as well as adding security updates. Your machine will run better but it will take about the same amount of RAM. The amount of RAM used in your computer is normal. The only way to make your applications run faster is to add RAM to your machine. Bring it up to at least 512 megs. Or better 1 gig.
