What Windows version is it? Do you remember, if you removed that card by using "Safely Remove Hardware" taskbar icon?
Try to insert that card again, and remove it using "Safely Remove Hardware"

1st question, does this solve your problem?

then,

click refresh(scan fo hardware changes) in the device manager to see if any request for driver pop up, install with new driver(or let windows to choose for you automatically) to see if your 1st problem still exist

i thinks you still can use your card reader if windows can found this hardware

If you un-install it no harm...when you decide to use it again all you have to do is re-install the drivers...
