After many years of using Google, I find that my Google search history is populated by things that I haven't used in many years and have no more use for. But trying to delete any of the history is proving to be a frustrating ordeal. The standard way of using "internet options", delete files, history etc only clears my internet explorer and not google. Is there any way?

What browser are you using?

I'm using IE6.

Try clearing forms under Autocomplete.

Google history, not your browser's history - right?
Are you signed in on Google? Go to Google's page and look to the top right.
That's where it appears on mine.
You might want to stay signed out.

Yes, doing the autocomplete thing cleaned it all up. Thank you for your help.

You're very welcome.
Be sure to comeback anytime.
On a side note, have you considered upgrading to IE7? If not you really should. It is a lot more secure than IE6 and makes it a lot easier to clear all privacy related information. (Lots of other new features as well.)
Just a friendly suggestion.
