Title: Ad Blocker
Post by: Natureguy04 on April 25, 2008, 08:56:46 PM
Okay this may sound lame but oh well. I'm trying to watch "The Office" online and when I click on the episode the site tell me I can't connect to the server because my "ad blocker" is blocking. I've turned off all my ad blocker and  pop up blocker and it still won't work. I'm guessing I have another program blocking, but have no idea where to look. Any suggestions? Thanks.

What browser? Windows version?

Windows XP Home Edition SP 2. Explorer 7. I'm also running McAfree Security Center and Yahoo Tool Bar. Everything they have that blocks ads and pop ups to my knowledge is turned off.

Okay I downloaded Firefox and still nothing. When I click on the desired video it just stays  Loading Video...... but does nothing. Maybe i'm not suppose to watch humor online  ;D

OK. It's not you, it's NBC problem.
I'm getting very same error message. I even tried to go there in FF safe mode (no add-ons), and same thing.
IE plays it without a problem.
It may be also the newest version of Adobe Flash Player, which gives me trouble on one other site (this time, in both, IE, and FF)

BTW...I like Office :)

Post by: Natureguy04 on April 26, 2008, 06:01:16 PM
So is there a solution? A few of my friends have been able to view it with no trouble. Curse NBC...lol
Title: Re: Ad Blocker
Post by: Broni on April 26, 2008, 06:12:50 PM
Actually, there is a solution. Install Firefox add-on - IE tab: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/1419
I just tried it, and it works.
BTW, Opera works, as well.

Okay, So I must not know what i'm doing wrong. I went to that link, and it's saying the version of Firefox I have isn't compatible with that add-on. .It says I need version 3.0b3 or 3.0b5pre. Can you talk me through it. Geez maybe the office isn't worth all this trouble.  ;D

Oh, OK. Try this version: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/35

Post by: Natureguy04 on April 26, 2008, 06:51:06 PM
Okay i'm prety sure it's downloaded now cause it's there under the Ad-on menu. but is there another step I need to do. the video still won't play.

did you restart firefox to complete the installation? Then when you get to the page you want, go to the firefox icon on the lower right of the browser and click on it to reload the page thru ie tab.
Title: Re: Ad Blocker
Post by: Natureguy04 on April 26, 2008, 07:07:30 PM
I'm guessing by restarting you mean to just close it and reopen it correct? I go back to the video page and I don't see the fox in any corner.

Or right click on this link: http://www.nbc.com/The_Office/video/episodes.shtml
and click "Open link in IE tab".

Geez you must think i'm an idiot by now. I don't have any of those little icons. I clicked on the other link and it started opening 100 extra blank tabs. when it finally stopped, you guessed it. still nothing.

I right clicked and it opened it back up in Internet Explorer not Firefox. When I do right click the only option I have is "Open Link Target in IE" Maybe that ad-on didn't really work?
Title: Re: Ad Blocker
Post by: Broni on April 26, 2008, 07:47:27 PM
Is it listed in Add-ons, under Tools?
Title: Re: Ad Blocker

I right clicked and it opened it back up in Internet Explorer not Firefox. When I do right click the only option I have is "Open Link Target in IE" Maybe that ad-on didn't really work?

The add on works for me. Now try this, if the IE tab is listed in the Add-Ons under tools......

Right click on one of the icons in the Navigation Toolbar (The part of firefox that has the back, forward, home, etc buttons), click on Customize.
Drag the IE tab icon onto the toolbar. Now go to the webpage in question normally as you do. Then click the IE Tab icon that you should now see in the Navigation Toolbar so that webpage is reloaded using the IE Tab.

In that image above, do you see the new tab next to the home tab? That's the icon I am referring to above, and when you click it, you should see the firefox icon like shown above to show that you have switched into the IE tab's IE mode.
Title: Re: Ad Blocker
Post by: Natureguy04 on April 26, 2008, 08:10:26 PM
it added the tab, but My tab icon looks different than the one you just posted. Mine looks like a white square with a blue title block on top with a yellow arrow. When I go to the add-ons menu and click on options, It shows the IE location as internet explorer, is that suppose to be like that? I think i'm missing a step somewhere.

It's my fault again. I gave you wrong install link. Uninstall that add-on, and I'll give you right link.

Well you have nothing to apologize for. I'm just glad you're willing to help me out here. So okay I got the new one added. the Icon is like your's now. How ever it's still not working. Well let me back up. It did start to work, but once it did I have no control over it stoping pausing or clicking a different episode. And it took the video about half an hour to start. I left one of the other tabs open and it started playing on it's own. Shouldn't there be player controls on it?

How about, if you try Opera? It's a nice, safe browser. You may just use it to watch Office.

okay so I just downloaded Opera. Same problem. I must have some other program running that's causing the problem. But i've turned everything off that I know of. Im sorry i;'m being such a pain in the backside. I hate to give up. but it seems as if nothing is gonna work.

I hate to give up, as well.
Uninstall Adobe Flash Player, using this: http://kb.adobe.com/selfservice/viewContent.do?externalId=tn_14157
Install fresh copy.

Title: Re: Ad Blocker

I would also suggest you clean your computer from your computer too using the built in XP disk Cleanup Tool. by clicking Start button, pointing to Programs, then pointing to Accessories, then point to System Tools, and then finally clicking Disk Cleanup.

And now after having installed the new fresh copy of Adobe Flash Player, hopefully you can get the videos to load correctly. If there is still a problem, I would try booting to boot the computer into safe mode with networking, then again try to view the videos ... as now, there shouldn't be any background programs that may affect the process of viewing the videos.

Good Luck at this point and let us know how it goes  :)

OKay so i've tried everything you guys have suggest and still it's not working. So I uninstaled McAfee just to see what happend. It still didnt' work. So when I got to work today I opened Up NBC and it played fine. I also have Explorer 7 on that computer. So i've come to the conclusion that I have something on my computer that's still blocking it. I know on some web pages that adds are still being blocked even though my pop up and add blocker are disabled. Oh i've reinstaled McAfee. I use to have a bunch of spy blockers and adware blockers but I also deleted all of those, nothing worked. So is there any way to do a system scan to find any hidden ad blocker or what ever may be causing the problem?

I already tried opera, last week when i was ready to give up. Oh well.... I sure appreciate all you efforts. You've gone above and beyond for sure. Thanks :)

I guess it must have been something on your computer, as you have tested IE, firefox and Opera and your HJT log is checked up and good. I would have suggested you try Safari browser (which you probably know works with Windows now) but I am thinking that it wouldn't work either.

Sorry you're still having the problem.  ;)

Yep thanks. I'm just thinking some how it's a combo of some good pop up and add blockers working too well.

Remove them all as they are probably banging heads...pick your favorite one and install only that one.

ya i've tried that also. but no luck. At least I think I uninstaled them all. But I don't know how to be sure.

Do you know how to open the add/remove tool in windows? Check there to see if any browser is still listed. Only browser you can't uninstall is internet explorer. You can only upgrade to ie7 or downgrade to ie6 from ie7.
