Title: Email read ...
Post by: Ivy on May 01, 2008, 05:18:45 AM
Hi,

I want to know if there is a way for me to know whether there is a way for me to know if the emails I have sent to a person have been read by him/her or not.

I  use Yahoo mail.

Thanks.

I don't see anything in yahoo for that. In outlook, you can ask for a read receipt...

Mozilla Thunderbird also has this feature.  From the little bit of poking around I did, it looks as if you need to use e-mail client software for this feature.  I did, however, stumble into this page (http://labnol.blogspot.com/2006/10/internet-email-hacks-get-notified-when.html) .  Actually, I very nearly tripped and fell over it!  This caused me to exclaim (in my best English accent), "Aha! A clue!"

The page describes two methods for ways of tracking e-mail.  The article also says they are not one hundred per cent reliable, but they are methods you may use.  The first involves a white one pixel image that is imbedded in the mail. When the mail is opened, it is reported back to you.  The second involves including a hyperlink in your email.  IF the person clicks the link, it is reported to you.

I find the second especially problematic in the sense that we are always being enticed to click things on the 'net, and it do get old... ::)

At least, with the e-mail clients, everything is "above board."  The recipient is notified that there is a receipt request on this e-mail, and asked if they wixh to proceed.  (It's been a long time since I've received one.)

Currently, none of the web-based emails, including GMail, Hotmail or Yahoo Mail, offer any kind of delivery notifications or read receipts.
But....

I'm sure, you'll.
It's just a learning process. That's all.

Well, part of it is that I'm kinda out of practice, part of it is that I usually need to "see" the problem -- helps if I have the operating system in front of me to "say" go here, here, or here; and some of it is that I'll try stuff on my own system that I won't just throw out there to other people.

I do enjoy the forum, though.

I'd recommend, you install some OS on virtual partition, and there you can play with it, you can mess with it, you can break it, if necessary.

Alright guys I like both the things Message tags and that lil gf image n link thing but I'm not able to decide which option to choose.

In the messagetag I need to have a "POP3" compatible email program or else I need to download  YPOP .

In the other one I need to put in that image or link through statcounter.com .

Which would be easier and better.

Aw. now you want me to work???   ;)

All right, let's see...   :)

All right, it seems like the last option, the Message Tag system, works with the Email client of your choice, so you'd need Outlook or Firefox, etc., and you can set the Tag system to auto-flag and track your mail, so you don't have to worry about all that.

The only real reason to use an e-mail client is if you want the e-mail to download to your computer, without having to save e-mails manually.  Currently, I leave all the mail I want to save on the Gmail server.  I may change that, and start using client software; however I digress...

Of the other two systems, I like the first one, that deals with the pixel, and tracks the pixel (although they warn that it doesn't always track).  I need to look at these some more.

If you suggest I go with messagetags, then here I go, I'm downloading YPOP.

But I also want to try that other one (image n link thing) , this one doesn't need any downloading so I'll go for this first....

yes, try the other first.  YPOP is fine, but YPOP is a "bridge" which allows you to use Outlook or Thunderbird, etc. with Yahoo mail.

As the bishop said to the actress, That's really annoying.

I've been looking at it for the last ten minutes.  I want to go back to the original article, too.

From the article I found:
Quote
The first and easy option is to sign up for a free account on statcounter.com. Goto the install code options, choose invisible tracking button and HTML only counter. Statcounter will now provide you an HTML Image snippet that you have to insert inside the body of your HTML email message.

Don't worry, the tracking image won't be displayed on the recipient's computer as the couter.gif file that gets downloaded on his side will be a 1x1 white image invisible to the human eye. As soon as your friend opens up your email, it will show up in your statcounter logs. You will know the details like date time when the email was opened and the IP address of his computer.

Did they give you this "image snippet" of which the article speaks?

Actually, begging the lady's patience, I'm going to download it and see what I can do.

yes, I'd do the YPOP to the e-mail client of your choice.  (I strongly recommend Thunderbird.)  The statcounter will actually be useful to me for the two websites I administer, so I'm going to play with those options some more.

What I read on the YPOP site is (paraphrase) that it makes Yahoo mail work seamlessly with Outlook or Thunderbird, or the -e-mail client you decide to use.

I don't know yet if YPOP will work by "itself."  (I'm guessing "no".  I have to go back and look.)

Broni, I'm gonna yell for a little support.  I don't know if YPOP works by itself.  I don't think it does.  A few minutes of your time is most appreciated.
