Title: Uninstaller AWOL
Post by: TrayShadix on May 10, 2008, 12:28:19 AM
Every program on my Add/Remove program list gives the error that it might already be uninstalled. Even Firefox. Which I am currently USING. Any ideas what causes this glitch?

I had similar problem after removing a program and then deleting residue from search.  Messed up my registry.  You can take a look at : www.support.microsoft.com/kb/141697,  But I would stay out of the registry unless you have experience with it.  Patio, Broni or some of the other really smart guys will drop by sooner or later so be patient and good luck.

My apologies for not being more thorough, Broni.  :-X

Operating System: Windows Vista, Home Premium, ServicePack-1 Installed

Error Message: "An error occurred while trying to uninstall [insert program name]. It may have already been uninstalled. Would you like to remove [insert program name] from the Programs and Features list?"

NOTE: Even if I click yes, it does nothing. Not that I'd want to click yes...because the programs are still there.

Manufacturer: HP Model M9100T, 3GBRAM, Intel Core 2 Duo.

Much like CryHelp, I recently removed a few pieces of residue from an incompatible webcam. Unfortunately, my system restore deleted the restore points from before this change when I installed Service Pack 1.

Go Start, and in Start Search type:
regedit
Hit Enter.

Navigate to:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\MICROSOFT\WINDOWS\CURRENTVERSION\Uninstall
and see, if Uninstall folder exist, and if so, if it has any programs listed there.

Yep. It's still there; chock full of stuff, too. Seems to be well enough in order, but obviously it's not.

Try Windows Installer CleanUp Utility: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/290301
Read manual on that page.

I don't understand how this is suppose to help my problem...unless there's a specific piece of the manual that I've overlooked.

For one, there's nothing that I WANT uninstalled yet...I simply doesn't have the ability to do so if I want to. Also, all of these programs still exist as a whole so removing the installer from Add/Remove Programs wounldn't be beneficial either.

All I want is for my Uninstaller utility to work property...

I apologize if I've overlooked something...It's late and I'm frustrated.

ADDED NOTE: Even when I use the Installer CleanUp utility - MOST of the programs on my computer don't even adorn the list...just the ones that were there when I got the computer form the factory and a few games.

I think the main problem is that the Programs and Features folder where the Uninstall option is located refuses to be aware of the files allowing alteration (and uninstallation) of every program. I'm not sure what causes that problem but I can uninstall programs just fine if I manually locate their uninstaller. If worse comes to worse I know I can delete things manually but it's just a hassle having a main section of my computer be broken...

try out ccleaner to clean your registry, and your hdd. www.ccleaner.com

Removed a pretty great deal of stuff, backed up just in case, of course, but aside from a gig of free space it gained deleting my temps there's no change to the system or problem at all. Sorry.

If all else fails take a look at:  http://www.revouninstaller.com/  I don,t even bother  with Add/Remove anymore cause it always seems to leave residue scattered everywhere.

Excellent program, but the computer in question has some issues.

I'm not sure why, but when I try to run this executable in particular, it tries to install to my slave drive...and while the slave has monumentous amounts of free space on it, it says there's not enough storage to process the command.

Did you...
Download, and install the latest Windows installer: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/893803

That's what I'm talking about. I downloaded the EXE but upon trying to install it starts unpacking to a slave drive automatically. None of the other EXEs I've run lately have done that. That's when it gives me the error.

What do you have on slave drive?

Post by: TrayShadix on May 15, 2008, 07:21:22 PM
It's an HP personal media drive. 444 out of 465GB free, there's just a few games on it. I'm not sure why it'd try to install there, in the first place. It seems like it's trying to set up temp files there to complete the new installer installation. Some kind of default screw-up maybe?

This is pretty weird.

Maybe, but I'm not sure, where to change it.
I know, it may be a hassle, but what would happen, if you disconnect your slave drive?

Surprisingly simple idea, and effective to a fault. It now attempts to uninstall to C:\ with the same exact problem.

Not enough storage is available to process the command [click okay]
installation did not complete [click okay]

Just for the *censored* of it, I'm going to restart my computer and try it again. A search of the error on google lead me to a few boards, none of where were resolved outside of World of Warcraft error and a few people whose installation problems were caused by Vista incompatibility. If I don't post again immediately, it's safe to say restarting did nothing.

Actually,

there's not enough storage to process the command

the storage space in question isn't a storage space issue that you'd think of as in disk storage, but as in space in memory to store another request.
You have 3GB of RAM, so I don't know what's going on here, but you may check the above link for more info.
Also, Google has tons of hits about your error:

None of this seems to apply to Vista at all. Even the supported systems on the installer download doesn't list Vista.
UPDATE: There IS no redistributable Windows Installer (4.0) for Vista, so I appear to be SOL on that one.

Do you have Vista DVD by any chance?

Nope. Three grand down on this thing and there wasn't even an OPTION to receive an OS disc. I thought if there was no option, for sure, it must come with one...not even close, I guess.

Get Vista Recovery Disc: http://neosmart.net/blog/2008/windows-vista-recovery-disc-download/
It'll allow you to reach Recovery Partition, and run Repair.

Alright. All set with the disc. What do I want to do, here? I don't want to lose my files or settings, and setting this thing up in the first place was an insane job...so I know I don't want to reinstall everything. System Restore is out. I don't have any Startup issues, I believe. That just leaves Complete PC Repair. That sounds like...a lot more work ahead.

Boot with that DVD...

To enter the Windows Recovery Environment, click the “Repair your computer” link at the bottom of the welcome screen and select the Windows partition you wish to repair. After this, it will present you with a list of options including startup repair, system restore and command prompt.

That's what I'm trying to say. There's several options on that list but they're all useless at this point. The first option fixes your startup process, which it confirms I have no problems with. Then there's System Restore which is of no use to me because my update to SP1 erased my system restore points from before this problem was occurring. There's Complete PC Recovery which isn't even usable because the computer is too new to have required a backup of anything and command prompt I can't figure out what I could use for in this situation.

I have a factory image drive thanks to HP but I'm pretty sure that'll erase EVERYTHING.

It's starting to seem like I'm SOL until Installer 4.0 comes out with a redistributable package or upgrades to 4.1.
