Title: Non visible CPU process. CPU Usage always 40% or more.
Post by: -Oscar- on May 10, 2008, 05:49:05 AM
Hello.

I have a problem with my CPU usage. CPU usage is always 40% or more. The thing I find weird however, is that when you check the task manager for the process causing it, you won't be able to find one. I even tried in safe mode where the problem is still there. One of the CPU core's is always working on something - which I can't see from the task manager.

Took these screens of the task manager while in safe mode.

As seen in this picture, total CPU usage says 47% even though there's no process to be found causing it.

In this picture you can see that the second core of the CPU is at load.

I have a DualCore AMD Athlon 64 X2, 3000 MHz (15 x 200) 6000+ CPU.
You can see the rest of my specs in my signature. It seems to be slowing down my PC so I don't assume this is normal. Thanks for any help in how to solve this.

Try Process Explorer: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb896653.aspx

The process is named Hardware Interrupts. What does this mean? How would I solve it? Thanks

This can help you find the answer....

High interrupt rates on I/O are often associated with the transfer mode for an IDE device having reverted from DMA to PIO. Pre-SP2 versions of XP in particular were rather sensitive to errors and would flip to PIO mode. They needed to be reset to "DMA if available" in Device Manager, usually by uninstalling the IDE driver and letting Windows reinstall. Check out MS KB article 817472.

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;817472

If not I/O-related then interrupts are possibly malfunction or bad connection in another device - try re-socketing connections.

By the way are you from the Baltic States area?

Just wondering. Thanks

I think you may need to seek manufacturer assistance if you are still under warranty. It could be an intermittent motherboard problem, perhaps with the IDE controller.

Thanks for the replies

Nope - Sweden  :)
None of the IDE devices had been reverted to PIO. Only Ultra DMA-mode 6.
I'll read through the links to see if I find anything.

If the documented solusions are unsuccessful then I will do this.

I spent couple of months in Malmoe, some years ago. Very pretty :)

I got it  all working. Problem was actually hardware related, and had nothing to do with PIO. When I inserted my new graphics card it made one of the SATA ports on my motherboard to bend slightly. I switched from the bended SATA port to an unbended one :) The XFX 8800 GTX sure is waayyy beefy.
Thanks for all the help.

The PIO was just a suggestion or place to start to look. You may remember I also wrote....

Glad to hear you got it fixed!

Just checking why it was a startup process....
Carry On.
