Two AV's?

Go to add/remove programs and uninstall
Anything with WildTangent in the name and anything with Viewpoint in the name.

----------

Run  The PC Decrapifier (http://www.pcdecrapifier.com/). Check the listings closely to be sure you are removing what you don't want.

*** You're running TWO antiviruses, or part of them: TrendMicro, and McAfee. Which one are you currently using?

*** You need to update your Java:
http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp
Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 6
Uninstall all previous versions of Java through Add\Remove.

*** Go Start>Control Panel>Add\Remove, and...
Uninstall any of the following programs associated with Viewpoint:
    * Viewpoint Manager
    * Viewpoint Media Player
    * Viewpoint Toolbar

Close all open windows, open HJT, and checkmark:
- O13 - Gopher Prefix:
- O20 - Winlogon Notify: DfLogon - LogonDll.dll (file missing)
- O23 - Service: Viewpoint Manager Service - Viewpoint Corporation - C:\Program Files\Viewpoint\Common\ViewpointService.exe
Click "Fix checked" button.

Delete Viewpoint folder from C:\Program Files

Restart computer, post new HJT log.

More cleaning will be needed after you clear up your AV situation.

We can remove McAfee leftovers through HJT, so, please run the above steps, restart, and post fresh HJT log.
Post also computer specs: processor speed, amount of RAM, hard drive size/free space.

I am wondering if you have defragment tool set up on schedule to work automatically?
No need to run defrag too often. Run it occasionally.

Your computer is clean (http://209.85.48.8/228/109/upload/p3879546.jpg)

1. Download, and install CCleaner: http://www.ccleaner.com/download/builds. Get "Slim" version.
Read CCleaner instruction here: http://www.jahewi.nl/ccleaner/ccleaner.html.
Run CCleaner.

2. Turn off System Restore:

- Windows XP:
   1. Click Start.
   2. Right-click the My Computer icon, and then click Properties.
   3. Click the System Restore tab.
   4. Check "Turn off System Restore".
   5. Click Apply.
   6.  When turning off System Restore, the existing restore points will be deleted. Click Yes to do this.
   7. Click OK.
- Windows Vista:
   1. Click Start.
   2. Right-click the Computer icon, and then click Properties.
   3. Click on System Protection under the Tasks column on the left side
   4. Click on Continue on the "User Account Control" window that pops up
   5. Under the System Protection tab, find Available Disks
   6. Uncheck the box for any drive you wish to disable system restore on (in most cases, drive "C:")
   7. When turning off System Restore, the existing restore points will be deleted. Click "Turn System Restore Off" on the popup window to do this.
   8. Click OK

3. Restart computer.

4. Turn System Restore on.

5. Download, and install free version of ThreatFire: http://www.threatfire.com/. It'll give you an extra protection against malwares. It won't interfere with your antivirus program

6. Read So how did I get infected in the first place?: http://www.castlecops.com/postlite7736-.html

It has 2 GB of RAM and tl-60(2.0 GHz) and i think 160GB hard drive
Title: Re: New computer
Post by: Broni on May 27, 2008, 09:25:09 PM
Sounds good. Do you feel like your computer is running slow?
Title: Re: New computer
Post by: iamtonsoffun247 on May 27, 2008, 09:26:58 PM
Well when it is first turned on on the screen where it says "Microsoft Corporation and has the bar under it showin its loadin, it seems to take it forever to start doing anything when it hits that part.  I may in the future upgrade to RAM to 4 GB, but thats the main part that seems sort of slow.
Title: Re: New computer
Post by: Broni on May 27, 2008, 09:33:08 PM
Upgrading to 4GB is throwing money away, because 32 bit OS will only use something in a ballpark of 3GB.
Do you have a lot of desktop icons?

Also, get ServiWin: http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/serviwin.html
It'll allow you to manage, and print out list of your services.
With that list, go here: http://www.blackviper.com/WinVista/servicecfg.htm, and compare your list with BlackViper's "Safe" column.

Well I got the geek squad at best buy to do an optimization, so they got rid of a lot....not many desktop icons at all

Definitely, check services.

By "It takes for ever", you mean?

Post by: iamtonsoffun247 on May 27, 2008, 09:56:06 PM
well once the laptop is done loading after the part where it says "windows corp." with the loading bar, its pretty fast.  im too nervous using that other progrm u reccommended lol i dont want to mess anything up.
Title: Re: New computer
Post by: mcxeb52! on May 28, 2008, 01:09:08 PM
1. get Ccleaner or cleanup.exe --> cleans out computer, both work fine.
2. just curious, what antivirus program do you use?
3. Already said --> 4 gb ram is not necessary,
4. Prob already said --> get defragmenter on auto scheduled mode.
Title: Re: New computer
Post by: iamtonsoffun247 on May 28, 2008, 09:20:20 PM
So Broni..... is that program u mentioned earlier quite easy? i tried it but was too afraid to mess anything up haha
Title: Re: New computer
Post by: Broni on May 28, 2008, 09:50:21 PM
If you use it, setting up services like at BlackViper's "Safe" column, you'll be SAFE. I've never had any problems with BlackViper's recommendations.
If any doubts, ask back here.

Haha I know it was dumb..... and I was going to post that too lol sorry broni, wont do it again.... yea I restored it to like 4 days before this "event" occured.  O and I had asked a few people about the long load time on my computer, and they said its probably fine.  Because after it pauses for a while on the microsoft corporation screen, everything else goes fast.  while some computers pause a while on the welcome screen or the likes, my comp just likes to load early I guess :)

I think Rightmark doesn't require installation, so just deleting its folder will do.

Is program closed?
If so, use Unlocker: http://ccollomb.free.fr/unlocker/
It'll give you an option to delete file(s) upon reboot.

Okay, so you know how ive been whiney about how my computer stops on the "microsoft corp." screen?  well I found this and I am wondering if i should follow it.... perhaps it can speed up my computer?

From windows help forums:

Have been searching the forum for months trying to find a solution to the halting installation, usually thought to have been associated with crcdisk.sys.The problem is in fact caused by pcmcia.sys files! To get round this, you need to delete or rename two files, but this can't be done from the safe mode command prompt, due to permissions.Instead, reboot from the install dvd and go to repair, then command prompt. Locate and rename the following files...Navigate to: c:\windows\system32\drivers\   Rename pcmcia.sys pcmcia.oldNavigate to: c:\windows\system32\driverstore\filerepository\   Rename pcmcia.inf_539d553e pcmcia.inf_539d553eoldTried it on my computer and it worked great, figure you already know this but maybe by chance someone else is looking and this is what they get first

well that was taken care of lol what im asking now is if i should delete the aforementioned driver from that exceprt from the windows discussion board.  i had talked about a hang time during startup, and I wanted to see if deleting it could make it load faster.

do i have to delete the actual driver and the other extensions it descries? cuz i can delete the driver in normal mode, but I cant delete the other file described in the windows post.  And I dont hve a vista DVD to boot from to do it from there...

They're not talking about deleting, but renaming files. Deleting any system file is dangerous.

OK so im trying to bring the comp back to its out-of-box state(i bought it used so i want it to be fresh) but when I do what it says in the user guide, it doesnt work :(  It says to hold down zero while powering on, but when i do that all it does is make a lot of loud beeping noises.

What user guide, and what exactly are you doing?
Title: Re: New computer
Post by: iamtonsoffun247 on July 02, 2008, 10:13:02 PM
using toshiba's recovery software which is supposed to be partitioned into the hard drive, but when I do what it says on the user's guide which is loaded on my computer, it doesnt work.  It just beeps real loud :(  Is there another way to do it?

You have to boot with that CD in order to run recovery program.
You can't do this from within Windows.

I'm sorry, I didn't read your reply carefully enough.
If your computer has recovery partition, you should be able to access it.
What's Toshiba model? Desktop, or laptop?

Are you following these steps: http://209.167.114.38/support/techsupport/tsbs/all/-TSB001018.htm?
That's in case, your laptop DOES have recovery partition. I couldn't find straight answer to this question.

okay so i tried it, but not too much success :(  I see for a second on the bottom it says <<<HDD Recovery Mode>>>, but then after that, loads like usual.  Strange :(

You may want to check in BIOS, if booting to recovery partition is enabled.
On newer Toshiba laptops;
1. Turn on computer by Holding down power button while pressing the ESC key.
The machine will beep, then display:
Check System, then press [F1] key.
2. Release ESC key
3. Press F1 key

Thank you for the dancing cool dude lol.  But I ran into something else.  When I go and download the new java, my webroot spysweeper blocks some of the installation parts.  At first i allowed all of them, and when i open a web page, it would take longer for a web page to load.  When i reinstalled and blocked all, the pages load fast again.  It still says it was downloaded sucessfully.  SHould I allow everything, or leave them blocked?

Java is safe, as long, as your computer is protected.
Surely, pages with Java, when Java fully installed, will open little bit slower, then without it.

Post by: iamtonsoffun247 on July 15, 2008, 08:04:13 PM
so shall I reinstall and allow everything tho it makes it slower to load pages?  I figured everything was safe, but since it seemed slower with all, i liked the speed lol

This is what most people do.

Talking about speed...remind me your computer specs, and internet connect type.
Did you go to any speed test sites?

What type of internet connection do you have?
Go www.speedtest.net.
Run test couple of times, and post back numbers for download, and upload.

Looks pretty low to me. What's Verizon advertised speed? If you don't know, try to Google it.

Post by: iamtonsoffun247 on July 15, 2008, 08:41:42 PM
This is what I found from a forum:

"More than likely, if your download speeds "aren't great," I'm assuming you're not even getting close to the 3Mbps down that's the typical residential DSL speed"
Title: Re: New computer
Post by: Broni on July 15, 2008, 08:49:03 PM
Well, I'm not sure about 3Mbps with DSL. Usually, DSL is little bit slower, than cable.
Possibly, they have different plans.
I'd take couple of minutes, call Verizon, and ask.

Title: Re: New computer

Well I dont really want to actually delete any programs, but I want to remove some things from startup, like im pretty sure the itunes helper can be removed, but i wanted to make sure that was right, and if there was anything else unnecessary at startup.

Have HJT fix these entries.

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SunJavaUpdateSched] "C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.6.0_07\bin\jusched.exe"
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Adobe Reader Speed Launcher] "C:\Program Files\Adobe\Reader 8.0\Reader\Reader_sl.exe"
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\QTTask.exe" -atboottime
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [iTunesHelper] "C:\Program Files\iTunes\iTunesHelper.exe"

----------

Go to Start > Run and type notepad.exe then click OK

Copy the text in the Code box below and paste it into Notepad.

Code: [Select]
REGEDIT4

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\windows\currentVersion\Run]
"SunJavaUpdateSched"=-
"Adobe Reader Speed Launcher"=-
"QuickTime Task"=-
"iTunesHelper"=-

In Notepad go to File > Save as...

Next to File name: type fixme.reg Use the dropdown box next to Save as type: and select All files. Save it to the Desktop.

There should now be a file on the Desktop that looks like this (http://i154.photobucket.com/albums/s258/evilfantasy69/reg.jpg)

Double-click fixme.reg it and allow it to merge with the Registry.

You may not see anything happen but give it a few seconds or so to finish.

Now delete the fixme.reg file from the Desktop.

You can also disable:
- O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Aim6] "C:\Program Files\AIM6\aim6.exe" /d locale=en-US ee://aol/imApp

QuickTime, even when disabled, will return after restart.
You need to employ this:
Download, and run QuickTime Killer: http://www.softpedia.com/get/System/Launchers-Shutdown-Tools/QuickTime-Killer.shtml
QuickTime Killer will remove QuickTime from start up and kill any running QuickTime processes. This application runs silently at start up and closes itself as soon as it takes care of QuickTime.

Thanks evilfantasy and Broni!!  Quick question (not questioning if what u told me to do is legit, because I already did it lol)  but what does the notepad thing do?  does that keep those things from ever starting up on startup again? lol im a computer hope wannabe lol.
Title: Re: New computer
Post by: evilfantasy on July 31, 2008, 08:54:03 PM
Yes. If you look at the regedit file it removes the startup key from the Registry. Therefore it won't startup.

QuickTime Killer adds a startup for itself so it kind of defeats the purpose.

Got another question.  When I try to burn a disc (CD-R) from itunes, itunes says "error 2131".  I have checked a lot of websites, and all have said there is no fix for it yet, but that you have to use CD-RW discs instead.  Then I found this:  http://www.cleanuppc.info/Error_details.php?files=Error%202131&gclid=CIeNy462qpECFSCHMAodayNUXA.  is this even legitimate?  Or a trap to buy some software?  Because it seems that according to this site, its a registry problem?
