Title: Computer Hope Quiz...
Post by: stevejohnson1958 on June 10, 2008, 10:24:50 AM
After all this time...I finally decided to sit down and take CH's quiz.

I have to admit...I tried to go through it as fast as I possibly could...thinking there may have been a time limit...but, boy...was I surprised when I found out there wasn't.

Anyway...thought I'd post my results for those who would like to laugh at my score.

Cheers to the CH Admin...for coming up with a neat little quiz.  Now I have to go back and study the areas where I failed miserably at.

For those of you who'd like a laugh...

I may go and take them myself.
I did start it once, but quite when I answered about 10, I thought there'd be a few hundred or something.
98 is OK though, if I get some time I'll go do it.
N`ot a bad score Steve, I think some of those questions are really hard.

When I look back at the one's I missed...I could hide my head in the dirt...

Don't forget to post your results, Calum...

I wasn't going to, at first, but thought...hey everyone should know...I'm not proud.

Know what I mean?

BTW...good luck!

OK, results attached.
When I look back at the one's I missed...I could hide my head in the dirt...
I know exactly what you mean.
Some of them I clicked and then realised what the answer was, but I didn't cheat.  Of the ones I guessed at, I got only 2 right, which doesn't quite follow the law of averages.

Thanks.
For anyone wondering, the quiz is here - http://www.computerhope.com/cgi-bin/quiz.pl - in case you can't find it.
For anyone interested, I did cheat afterwards to see what full marks got, and the highest band is Computer Expert, there's nothing above that.

The "What is Unix short for?" question comes up twice.  I don't remember the first instance, but the second was #60.

Cheers to the CH Admin...for coming up with a neat little quiz.  Now I have to go back and study the areas where I failed miserably at.

You're welcome and thank you for the compliments.

The "What is Unix short for?" question comes up twice.  I don't remember the first instance, but the second was #60.

I originally based the quiz off of all previous monthly quizzes that have been posted on Computer Hope over the past few years. I've received a lot of complaints about some of the questions and have been trying to fix what I can.

Example: the XP question that used to say the upcoming version of Windows. ;)

I've updated #60 to something else. Direct link to new #60:

http://www.computerhope.com/cgi-bin/quiz.pl?60

Sometime in the future I plan on revising the code to offer some additional features. Off the top of my head I know the top requested things are:

- Disable the ability to go back and cheat.
- Break the quiz up into categories; e.g. networking, windows, dos, etc.

As always I'm open to suggestions and new quiz questions also if you see any other problems please let me know or send an e-mail to webmasters.

A full listing of all questions without going through the script is also at:
http://www.computerhope.com/answer.htm

I'd post my results but I've dealt with these questions so many times that I've pretty much got the whole thing memorized so pretty sure it would be 100 without cheating.

What would be nice, Nathan...is to see the quiz broken down into categories.  Preventing cheating would be nice, as well.

It would also be a good idea if you could add a malware category...with questions along that topic in regard to specific software like HijackThis, etc., etc.  The tests could be used to determine if an individual would qualify for a particular position within the forum such as Moderator, or Malware Specialist.

I mean...say a person wants to help within the Malware forum, there could be a particular test this individual could take...and based on their background...and scoring on the test...this info could be used to determine whether or not the individual would be a good candidate for that position.

Just a thought...

I still remember the poll for your becoming a moderator J.

The quiz is a good test of general knowledge, especially for some of us who were around when some of the "older" questions were still really relevant to the computer scene.

Some of the questions are arcane, but some are "gimme's," too.
Title: Re: Computer Hope Quiz...
Post by: Zylstra on June 11, 2008, 03:56:45 PM
Why's that?
I plain and simply dont have the attention span to even complete something like that.

The same goes for standardized tests in school, like the WASL, ITBS, NWEA, etc... I tend to fail because I find that about 20 questions in, I am circling the same answer, or my mind floats off topic, and I just cant pay attention to it.

(Why am I able to sit in front of the computer for hours on end? I have no idea..)

I still remember the poll for your becoming a moderator J.
You know, in that poll asking if I should be a moderator or not, it turned out like this:

Yes: 8
Maybe: 13
No: 14

Sure, the amount of "Maybe's" divided by two (= 6.5) plus 8 (= 14.5 ) equals slightly more than the "No" count (= 15 when rounded) but, I really didnt have much support at all.

I really liked the approach that Nathan took to new moderators at that time, which was:
You first became an FAQ Board Moderator, then, after you've done that for a while, you become a full moderator.

Of course, now, our FAQ board does not require as much maintenance, and it would be pointless to dedicate a moderator to. The only other thing I can think of is if it were an "Off-Topic" or "Others" section moderator, mainly since we get a lot of incorrectly placed posts in the "Others" board.

I retook the test myself...and only answered like 7 correctly...and was given the status of Computer Newbie, as well.

I wonder how Nathan has it setup...determining what status you get from the number of correct answers?

BTW...thanks Aegis...appreciate it.

Can we get back on topic here please?
Sniping at people about links is getting no one anywhere.  It's just a link to a similar sort of quiz, no big deal.

It looks like every 20% gives a different rank.  It's possible to edit the URL and thereby cheat to get different scores, so if you're interested take a look and see which scores give what rank.
According to some of the "professionals" I've seen, I'd say "yes."   ;D

Stop assuming things Calum!!!!!!!
I said above that post was not for Brian but I didn't say that it was for someone else!!!! Its just a joke between me and someone on the thread!!!!!
Anyway if posting links to his forum seems to make you think people would say things like ''somethings never change'' to your friend, then I guess you either suggest him to quit doing that or just don't be too touchy about it.

You need to calm down a little calum! From the first day I've been on CH you've been this way, you are a moderator not a Cop or something.

And if my posting on CH hurts anyone, then I can stop posting from now on.
