Hello all. I got a PSP for free, and I really dont know what to do with it.
I dont play games.
I was thinking about using it as just an MP3 player type thing, but, I am wondering:
How well would a device like this run a system like Ubuntu, or D**n Small Linux?
I havent seen a screenshot of a system running a Linux Desktop environment, only the terminal.
Then again, I'm not sure that would be worthwhile, I mean, what could it do? Theres no keyboard...
So, I am clueless. What do you all think?
-
Take it apart and make something with it like my car made of IC chips. ::)
-
I say put Linux on it!
I've no such experience, but I ran a search in Firefox, and came up with THIS (http://www.google.com/search?q=linux+for+psp&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&aq=t&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&client=firefox-a).
-
It depends how much the card will hold but you can put music, videos an get online with it if theres a wireless connection. It lets you see a good bit of connections even if there not public.
-
The obvious solution would be giving it to me.

hahaha, thats what my brother said.
He's giving me a SmartPhone (Windows Mobile 5.0, I think) and tried to convince me to give him the PSP, but, I told him it had a broken screen (which, it does)
You have to go around the medium sized black blotch on the upper right hand side of the screen.
-
Thats why I dont use mine much.
-
Put LInux on the PSP, already... ;)

Doesn't the drive need to be unlocked for this to work first ? ?
-
????? There are none except for the disc drive.

If PSP's weren't so expensive, you could find a broken one on eBay and scrap it for parts. But at this point, even a broken one would cost you a pretty penny. Of course, I'm also poor and cheap. I'm still upset that it's going to cost me $20 to buy a broken phone and scrap it so I can fix my fiancé's phone. Heh.

Hey, Chris -- just look at the cost of outright replacing the phone! If you can fix a cell phone for twenty bucks, you're doing well! ;)
-
Really, it would have costed me more then a thridy dollars to get my gaming pc to work. But I took it in an got charged that.
-
Well, considering I need a special memory card (a non-SD one) I think I will hold off modifications for now.
I dont have a Memory Stick Duo (or whatever it is)
-
Yeah thats what it uses.
-
i have a psp there are things called homebrew if it has firmeware 1.5 or custom firmware and also its called a portal you can run mac os x vista xp all kinds of cool things
-
There's Homebrew for the Nintendo DS as well....and the GameBoy Advanced.
Pretty neat stuff.
-
Never knew of such, cool
-
Yeah, I can surf the internet with my DS using one of the Homebrew Programs.
-
I have a Gameboy SP... it still gets me that they didnt have a headphone jack. If they did, I am sure it would have been converted into a MP3 player.
-
Where is my Gameboy SP? ???
I got older versions sitting in my cabinet.
-
too bad i sold my old gameboy advanced at a grage sale >:( my freind also said you can call people on the ds too
-
If you want to put music on it, your going to need to download SonicStage
This program is used just for PSP and other Sony software
It will convert your audio files to an Atrac format, which basically compresses the music to a smaller size without lowering the bitrate
You'll be able to add in ALOT of music files if they are in atrac format
I own a PSP, and i primarily use it for Music. I have a few games, but i rarely ever play them.
-
You dont really need a converter, I made mine to mp3 an draged them on there.
-

Yeah, I saw a homebrew app that does this and I've seen it on Youtube.
Not sure if it's true or not...

It's expensive when you're poor like me. Heh.

Last I checked, he has dial up.
-

-
I know on the west coast of Washington, they have free dialup in some places, free and unlimited. I've used it before. Quite a wonder...
-
That expains it but I live in the east

I wonder if there are any homebrew applications for the original Gameboy (B&W)? lol
-

If you're refering to my post-
original gameboy, as in- circa 1990. I mean there are homebrew games for it, but you need either a emulator or a flashable cart- it was kind of a joke, but it would actually (now that I think about it) probably even be possible to make a web browser for it- if the WIFI connection was part of the cart. Kind of a limited market, however.
-
I think I have you going the right direction know.

I don't pay it.

Correct.

What stuff? Dial-up is slow, but it doesn't prevent me from doing anything that I want to do.

Well, yeah...dial up is fine...I figure, as long as you're getting to the 'net, you're good.
Too many Halo and Crysis and WoW fanboys who want to pwn everyone else... ::)
-
it must take forever to download a 1mb file though and thne you cant talk to anyone on the phone either
-
Not true if its a gb file then it does. Thats only some what true if it uses the main line. But if you have a sencondary or a cell you still can.
