I know there is software to retrive info off of drives, but I never messed with a dead one. Is it possible to self fix it or do I have to send it to maxtor? There is data I want off the drive.
-
There are co. that do DATA RECOVERY, Google data recovery
-
By the way, sending a drive to a company that does data recovery can cost a lot...like $3000.00.
If the software doesn't work your going to have to ask yourself how bad do you want the data?
-
Wow, verys pertty bad some what.
-
What are some good ones?

I never did just want to prevent a trojan or something.
-
I got the program. Do I have to connect it as an external or internal.
-
Hook it up as a slave drive (so it would be Internal).
-
I installed the software, hooked the drive up ran the software heard it beep wierd, the thing just ran like nothing is wrong. :o I'm using it right know. Saved me thridy dollars.

I have had drives that were sitting around for a few weeks that were toasted. I remeber one of them I banged on the table and it started right up. The bearings were stuck and banging it broke it free.
-
Bearings? There are ball bearings in a Hard Drive? ??? ???
-
Not that I know of I took my one drive apart an it was dead. I think he means the needle that reads the hd sectors.
-
The motor has an external rotor; the stator windings are copper-colored. The spindle bearing is in the center. To the left of center is the actuator with a read-write head under the tip of its very end (near center); the orange stripe along the side of the arm, a thin printed-circuit cable, connects the read-write head to the hub of the actuator. The flexible, somewhat 'U'-shaped, ribbon cable barely visible below and to the left of the actuator arm is the flexible section, one end on the hub, that continues the connection from the head to the controller board on the opposite side.
