and this is a computer --->(http://www.global-b2b-network.com/direct/dbimage/50293259/Computer_Case.jpg)

now that thats cleared up, as jerry said, we will need to know your budget and what he plans to use it for.

Hey Homer, it's possible he wants to upgrade his CPU because he's talking about his motherboard.  ::)

Hey Homer, it's possible he wants to upgrade his CPU because he's talking about his motherboard.  ::)

if thats the case then he should have stated that he wishes to upgrade his old CPU and motherboard. however, regardless of his wording, i believe it is still best to clear up the common CPU/comp misconception in order to avoid confusion.

@rebel214: I am not familiar with EMAXX boards; have always used ASUS or (awhile ago, ABIT.)

What model MB are you looking at? What type of processor (CPU) - AMD or Intel? How will your friend use his computer?

Give us some more info and we'll be pleased to discuss further with you. :)

thanks guys! ;D

anyway, here's my friend's computer specs....... :P

Windows Xp SP2 (still working)
Intel Pentium III 400Mhz
Abit Motherboard socket 370 (i forgot the exact model of the board) ::)
32MB NVIDIA TNT2/M64 AGP Video card
UNC 256MB SDRAM PC133 (2 128MB Module)
20GB Seagate Hard Drive
50x Acer CD-ROM drive
3.5 Sony Floppy drive
350W ATX PSU (Original PSU already defective)

quite old, huh! 8)

this computer was onced used by his brother and just hand over it to him...

my friend plans to buy new motherboard, definitely with RAM, and Processor...

planning to use this computer for basic applications (word processing, online surfing and of course, games but not his main option, though...)

items that could still be used fro his old computer:

Hard drive (storage)
CD-ROM drive
3.5 FDD

Hello!
Welcome to CH!
I think it will also depend on his budget and where will he use it..Is it for gaming?
budget: P8000 - P9000 ($190 - $215)

gaming is not a main option, but a few could not harm... ::)

Option A:

AMD Athlon Processor
EMAXX/ECS motherboard
1GB DDR2 Ram
80GB SATA HDD (WD/Maxtor)
Asus/Sony DVD/RW drive

Option B:

Intel Core 2 Processor
Asus P5VD2/P5SD2
1GB DDR2 Kingston
80GB SATA HDD (WD/Maxtor)
Asus/Sony DVD/RW drive

tower casing, think can still use it.... ::)

In my own opinion, i prefer to take Option B, but budget is a big issue here..(he is cost conscious heheheh) :P

I am using Asus motherboard for the computers i assembled before, and in fact, I haven't tried that (EMAXX) motherboard yet, (this time, maybe)..i have also read online about EMAXX mobo and they say its great performance motherboard in a low price platform(cheaper price compared to others).. ;D

I also tried ECS before but not quite like it (bulging capacitors after 1 and a half year of use), and its kinda slow.... ??? (i don't know on their latest models..)

plan to buy this week and maybe I will go for option B.. >:(

any suggstions will be greatly appreciated! 8)

thanks guys! ;)

Is this in Philippine Peso? I think thatīs too tight for an Intel Core2

He might want to check computer prices on PCExpress:

http://www.pcx.com.ph/pricelist/pricelist.asp

But if he wants, he can find surplus computers, having PentiumD processors with that amount.. see Buy and Sell magazines..

Looks like it could be tight on that budget but you've obviously spent some time thinking about it - seems to me that a low to mid AM2 MB with AMD  x2, 2.5 or so ghz processor and 1 GB RAM plus HD will take all of the money; and, will be a huge improvement over his current system!

Perhaps @jerryheavyarms idea of some used components/computers could extend his dinero and add some room for the DVD and a video card.

Best of luck!
