Yes, at various times, it's been slow in responding today for me.
-
yeah it happened a few mins ago
-
It's been happening to me all morning....and afternoon...
-
Thanks - I've had DSL connection issues and wanted to be sure it wasn't at my end.
-
Its Nathans 20 year old computer!
-
I dont think that its a c64 or something. It hasnt been for me?
-
Actually it is a c64.. curse this 64k of memory!!! Bill Gates told me I would never need more than 640k obviously he's not right. But in all serious, yeah does seem to be having some issues more and more recently. I'm in contact with the ISP to see if there is anything we can do to help relieve the stress on the servers.
-
Working with ISP now. However, now the forums seem to be working ok and they've indicated that the server has not set off any load alarms. So it's going to be more difficult to track down since it randomly seems to occur. However, since I've been getting more complaints about this recently I'd like for everyone to help me log when this occurs and what you were doing when it occurred to help me help the ISP determine if it is an issue with the server or maybe an issue with SMF.
Type of feedback I'd like.

I noticed that we set a new record today, 981 users online. Maybe we need a newer server and/or more bandwidth speed..... ???

I missed it again....
-
If the server was reaching a limitation the ISP would of handled it they've got several triggers setup to warn them if capacity has been met and/or exceeded. Bandwidth is also definately not an issue. Which is why this issue is tricky. I've been trying a few things and noticed I've been able to duplicate the issue when I've got old forum searches taking place so going to try creating an index file later tonight to see if that helps things.
-
It seems like I missed it again. Thats why I wanted to have some of my ideas in play so that this wouldnt happen but I dont think it would be able to prevent this. I had a feeling this would happen any how so I'll try an take notice if I can.

Hey, Carbon...
I can't use FasterFox to see page loading time, because it's not compatible with FF3, so, if you're using FasterFox, just to see load time, you may consider switching to Extended Statusbar: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/1433 (A Statusbar with Speed, Percentage, Time and loaded size (like in Opera) )

Thanks for all the additional feedback has been added to first post. Also some of the slowness today could be my generation of a search index. We'll see if that speeds anything up if it ever finishes. Goes real slow to help prevent the boards from getting overwhelmed.
-
do you spend your whole day going through the Firefox archive?
I check new add-ons nightly :)

Sounds like something I used to do. That's what got me up to 70+ addons (most inactive)

Attempting to create a custom search index failed. However, was able to create a full search index. So right now the old search found on the bottom of every page for those of you who still use it now uses a index instead of querying the full database for each search.
If you're noticing bad search results on this engine let me know. Hopefully this will also speed the forums up a little more. Still report problems though if you're still encountering them.
-
Ugh, just got another some slow response, which I added to the first post. So obviously not the search queries that are causing this. Going to take the forums down tonight to run some additional maintenance. Will create a new post.

To be honest, this isn't the first time I've seen that.
-
Hey Broni, same catch.
EDIT: still running slow (11:30 - 11:46)
-
Yeah got the same thing. Seemed to happen when I was logging into the MySQL server, which is real strange. But the MySQL server is still trying to load the login page? I swear it's got to be something up with the server.
However, I'm going to put in a support request with SMF to see if they have recommendations and also contact ISP again. Although at this time of night I'd imagine no MySQL admin is available so will probably have to wait until tomorrow for further troubleshooting on the server end.
Thanks again for status updates.
-
Got a hold of the ISP support agent had been noticing that the MySQL was getting hit with something. So something is up with server. They're looking into it now and if can't get it properly up again will be getting admin to check it out.
-
That's good. Maybe with all these reports in this thread, we can get somewhere.
still running slow
Normally, here, pages load in 1-2 sec, right now, it takes 5-10 sec
-
Agreed. And right now there should be no excuse because the forums are slow at this moment.

Well after working with ISP and SMF unfortunately at this point in time there isn't much that can be done. What we believe is the issue is that the MySQL server is being shared with other clients and Computer Hope services so it's possible that when one or more of these are going with the forums at the same time that it's causing time-out issues.
Thankfully the issue isn't too bad (yet) and hopefully by the time it starts to become more of an issue I'll have the forums moved over to a dedicated server(s).
For the time being thanks for all the feedback and help.
-
Today, at least here, it's been the worst day since a long time.
It takes some pages 20-60 sec to load.
For instance, just right now, it took 47 sec to load this:

Earlier today when I got home, CH was soooo slow so I went to Toys R Us and got Apples to Apples.
-
It's better for maybe last hour, but a whole day was horrible, and I've been here since very morning.
-
yeah this morning was horrible what could be causing this?
-
Look, Nathan has been working on this issue with his ISP for last couple of days....that's all I know.

I'm just glad he's trying. Otherwise, he might scare us away.

Hong Kong, LOL
Wiki-Answers:
Hari kari, also known as sepuku, is an ancient form of ritual suicide that defeated samurai, or those whose shame was 'too unbearable' would use to restore their honor in death.
Interesting....

I thought, it was hara-kiri....:)
-
Hate to be the one to resurrect this topic but does anyone else feel any slowness today?
-
Yeah - from time to time; 1136 MDT, ≈20 sec to post a reply.
-
It's still on the top of my to do list so have no worries about resurrecting this thread. I'm trying to get it resolved, but I think the primary issue is that the forums are currently being ran on a server that's a shared server and that other MySQL scripts that are running at the same time as your requests on the forum is what is slowing down the forum. Working with ISP with getting a dedicated server and/or better setup.
-
Not complaining, just informing :)

Just had this (11:15PM HKT):

Actually, ComputerHope has been running a bit sloppy for a few days now, don't know if it's just me or anyone else...

Not just you. Yesterday, 8/24 had several 30 - 60 sec "stalls"; same this morning.

Wow - hope that you didn't suffer from any withdrawal symptoms! :)
Okay, been sluggish for me all morning - 8/26.

Sorry guys for the slowdowns. I am continuing to see what I can personally do. But at this point the issue is in my ISP hands. Still a work in progress, but the issue is not forgotten.

Unlocking and reviving this post for some additional testing.
At the suggestion of Zylstra I'm going to try to enable SMF persistent connection to see if it helps with the performance of the forums and some strange issues I've been encountering with chat. Please make posts on this thread if you're still seeing slowdowns and at try to describe the slowdowns to the best of your ability, e.g. what time it happened with your time zone and what you were doing.
If this doesn't help or makes things worse will be going onto next step and attempting to convert the SQL database from 4.x to 5.x.
Thanks.
-
Ok. Scratch that idea, server definately did not like it. :o Sorry about that for those users who were disconnected and ran into other connection related issues. Guess I'll take the next step and convert the databases in the upcoming days.

Although this topic is locked, I would just like to mention that I was talking with Saviour the other day on the Chat and something happened, not sure what, but I lost connection and computerhope wouldn't respond for a few minutes.

Yeah it's happening a lot, still working on the cause of the issue and if determined a resolution. Seems to happen most often after sitting in the chat on inactivity and then trying to start again.
-
I've successfully converted and copied over the database to the MySQL 5.0 server. Hopefully this should speed things up more.
Still working on the chat, believe it's still pointing to the 4.1 MySQL server. This is still a shared server, however according to the admins not hammered as hard so may help resolve the slowdowns that sometimes occur on the forums and also resolve the chat issue (once moved over) at the same time.
I'm unlocking this thread again, please report good/bad feedback you're experiencing while on the forums.
p.s. There was a mix-up with the database naming scheme, so it's likely that I'll have to take down the site again when I can get a hold of the SQL admin Monday. Until then test away. Appart from the site going into maintenance mode sometime Monday you shouldn't notice anything else.
Update:
Really confusing how the chat handles the SQL database, so just re-ran install to make sure it's using 5.0 database, although still not 100% sure if it is or not since Carbon remains in the chat even after moving servers. I don't think he'd remained logged in...
Update2:
Just ran a optimization on the forums at 3:16-3:20am (MST) during this time the forums did go unresponsive. This is actually ok and wasn't an issue with the new server. Sorry for those who were online and had to experience this short downtime.
-
Sorry about remaining in the Chat, Nathan. I accidentally left it on when I went to my Drum Lesson.
So...Did I become a Lab Rat during that time? :P
So far so good, BTW

My Connection has been really fast today
Its just that I cant connect to the chat.

Are you using the link on the main home page? What's happening when you're attempting to connect? Finally, what browser are you using?

Horrible, horrible....same as drmsucks

Ok. Thanks all for the additional feedback. Guess I'll need to start the process of setting up a dedicated server. Closing topic again since I'm aware issues still exist and I'm working on it.
-
I know this topic is locked (again....) but I have been experiencing so much slowness today.
Also got this a couple of times:
Connection Problems
Sorry, SMF was unable to connect to the database. This may be caused by the server being busy. Please try again later.
I don't know if this post will help at all, but I felt like I should mention it.

I realize its locked as well, but I wanted to add;
It may be a good idea to ask your hosting provider about different dedicated server packages... since you probably dont need a mega server like a lot of dedicated users use, you just need something that's not overloaded.
I would think they would offer different levels of computing power for dedicated servers.
Also, as a temporary solution to just reduce load times, you might consider doing maintenance on attachments, since attachments are part of a permissions group which has to be queried first, and even disabling attachments.

"Network Timeout"
My last two posts before this had connection issues as well.
Edit: When I posted this post, I also had issues with network timeouts.
-
Unlocking topic again.
Web host got their SQL expert to look at the database and apparently SMF is indexing a lot of empty databases and he indicated that this spot of SMF was the biggest bottleneck and could be causing a lot of slowdowns. So, please post any slowdowns you encounter again after this post has been made and try to get as specific as possible on what you were doing, what time you were doing it, length of delay, etc.
Thanks again. I and my webhost haven't given up on this yet.
-
Lets hope all goes well....eventually....
-
Not sure if it was my end or not but I had troulbe going any where here. It kept saying something about connectivety, also wondering why this is being unlocked an locked.

Guessing it's something on your end because everything looks fine here. If it continues please post the actual error message you're getting; "something about connectivity" doesn't really tell me too much.
It's getting locked and unlocked because when I'm working on it and got all the feedback I've needed there is no need for users to continue posting problems they're encountering.
-
That explains alot, I will just thought you probably knew about it.
-
i don't know if you were working on it at the time but i got the:

Just to have my input as well whilst I'm here!
I had slow connection issues today and @ 19.30 GMT with an error page claiming:
"Connection Problems
Sorry, SMF was unable to connect to the database. This may be caused by the server being busy. Please try again later."
I've been getting this around 8 out of ten times when clicking on forum links. :'(

I came home about an hour ago, and so far, so good. I keep my fingers crossed :)

I spoke too soon:

Ok, I think that information will suffice for now, thank you everyone who gave their feedback on issues they encountered. I'll see if anything further can be done. SMF 1.1.6 was also recently released so will be updating to that too soon and that may also help. Although from the looks of the patch notes looks as if it's mainly security related.
-
Wow, the forum is currently using 1.1.6. :o
-
Keeping everyone in the loop
Web host is suggesting converting MySQL database tables to InnoDB, which from what I read in the below SMF thread has helped a lot of uses who have bigger forums. I'm not set in stone in doing this yet until I get a few more questions answered. But be prepared that if I'm satisfied that I'll be attempting to convert tables this weekend.

They're actually 1.1.5 but issue with version reporting after I installed the flash chat mod. Under works, but you're correct all users should be seeing that 1.1.4 is being used.

Did you ever do a detailed version check to see what exactly is reporting the old version?

Yep it's actually a bug, all my files (before 1.1.6) showed properly as the latest file, but yet the forums still reported it as 1.1.4 after flashchat mod. I still need to uninstall this mod, just yet another thing that's on the list of things to do. :)

Update:
Continuing my work on resolving the forum performance issues. I've decided instead of tweaking and trying to resolve lagging issues to move to a dedicated server. After doing some research and contacting a few of the companies I've decided to go with DedicatedNow (http://www.dedicatednow.com/). I'll be purchasing the server I need and be setting it up over the weekend. If everything goes without a hitch I'd hope to have the new server up and going by the beginning of next week.

Thank you - the forum performance the last few days has been a bit exasperating :)
Is there any way to help "kick in" for the new server? - I'd be willing.

I appreciate the offer but the help you and everyone else is offering on the forums is plenty of help. Financially, even with the new server setup I should be fine. Also Computer Hope is a SCorp so I file the server fees as a tax write-off.

You might all find something wrong with what I'm about to say, but anyway....
For me, Computer Hope has never been quicker, and it has been a long time since I got...

???

And again for about 5 minutes.
I don't get it. It was fine the entire day up to now...

S Corp probably a good idea. But, an Income Statement has two sides to it :) Just thought I'd ask.

I know this is locked (again) but ComputerHope was fine last night......tonight it is absolutely horrible (at my end at least).
For the past two hours, I have been getting the SMF Connections Problem message and navigating the forum takes ages.
Any reason why it happens only at night here? :(
[Keeping it locked, but if anyone wants to drop a word here, I will unlock it]
-
Note : Drmsucks sent me this last night. (I just got it)
Saw your post in the forum. It is basically unusable this morning, 9/16, 1000 - 1030 MDT - slow connections, no connections, etc.
-
Aware of the issue. Been working on setting up dedicated server.

This threads been opened and locked more than my convertible this entire summer....
