Is there any way to edit the subject field on emails that have been received? (Friends replay without changing the subject, and I would like to save the email with the subject field corrected)

When someone replies to an email from you, the subject has "Re:" inserted, doesn't it? So, why do you want to change the subject? It should remain the same. The "Re:" clearly indicates it's a reply, not an original message. And, if you reply back to such a message, the subject line will start with "Re: re:". That creates a sort of a trail which can be useful in recognizing the history of the message. So, why try to change the subject line?

Like what I just did to my post's subject.
You will notice that, because Soybean replied, there is a Re: in his subject.

I noticed the moderator asked me why I would want to do this and then, did not answer the question. Ditto Carbon. I have been doing email a long time, and yes, I know about "RE." If you don't know how to do something, or know that it cannot be done, say so. Don't doubt my reasoning in trying to do something. I have a very good reason. Perhaps you guys don't use email very often. I think this website is not worth the effort. Farewell.

LOL. You have no idea how wrong you are. But, yes, I was questioning your reason for doing it.
I see no way to change the name and still have the message appear in your Inbox with the new name. You can use the Save As option to save the message with a different name, but I believe such messages no longer appear in Outlook's mail folders; they could be opened by double clicking on them from an Explorer window.

Thank you for your kindly worded message. I was in a bad mood when I wrote that email. I apologize. Sometimes it is very easy to write something unpleasant and then regret it later. I have learned that lesson before. I am a slow learner.
I have accepted the fact that I cannot edit the subject line. But I could forward it to myself with a new subject line. It works, but sometimes it is a pain.

I'm curious what this would be...as i can't think of why it would need to be done...

A couple reasons. First, sometimes an email conversation gets going and we don't change the subject. On one or more of the emails is something I want to keep, save. If I were able to rename the subject, it would be helpful.
Second, I subscribe to a newsletter that has the same subject each week. I would like to save the emails with subject lines that reflect the content that is relevant to me.

The only way I can think to do this would be to manipulate the message headers. You may or may not be able to do this by right clicking on the message in your Inbox and select "Options". Within this window you may be able to see the message headers...and here you can change them.
Not sure if it'll work, though...or if that field is even accessible.
Worth a shot, though...

I just looked at Outlook 2007 and I can view the content of the message header but it won't let me edit the header.

Why not create folders in Outlook to organize your messages? That's what I do. For example, I get an email newsletter from a computing magazine. I have a folder by the name of the magazine and have a Rule setup to automatically direct all mail from them to that folder. Now, suppose some of the newsletters feature an article on Mircosoft Excel and I want to keep those separate from the other messages. I create a sub-folder under that main folder and name it Excel. I then move the messages with content on Excel to the Excel folder.

It's out there...with Google, the world is at your fingertips. BTW...not meant to offend.
I've never tested the software...but it would seem after reading a brief description...it is possible (with the appropriate software) to manipulate email headers. Spammers do it all the time.
Whether or not this software will have any use with Outlook...again...I've never used it.

I have about 30 folders in my Outlook 2003. I need to identify what is in each of the different emails. Sometimes I cut and paste into a word document that I keep in a folder in "my documents." So far, the easiest way to identify a particular email with its content is to send it back to myself with an altered subject field.

I was trying to find out how to do the same thing for my husband. He gets files that have the same name and he would like to rename to indicate the date range they are for. I found the following site that tells you how. Basically, open up the email, highlight the subject line (even though it looks like you shouldn't be able to), rename and close. Subject line is changed! I tried it and it worked on my computer and on his. Hopefully this works for you also.

ElizaD THANK YOU! What a simple thing to do to fix the problem! It is embarassing that I did not think of doing that myself. Outlook is often called the "orphan" of the MS Office package. It rarely gets the attention it deserves. Personally, I think Outlook is one of their best packages. Why could they have not just put "rename" in the right-click options?

Go to View, Arrange by - current view, customize current view - other settings, ENABLE the option called: Allow in-cell editing.

I remembered setting this option years ago and couldn't remember how I'd found the setting - thank you Navyn for reminding me!
As for all those that can't understand why you'd need to use the facility - I'm with the OP on this one.
It's an obvious need for a business user. There are too many people out there that either don't bother to put a subject, or write something completely meaningless - for example, one company I work for insists on putting "IT course" for every single time she wants to book me to run a course! So i end up editing the subject with the date of the proposed course along with the Application to be trained.
