Title: Sony Vegas 8.0 error

i have a quick question, i have windows xp pro system that has vegas 8 pro on it. my friend wants me to edit a video for him. he gave me all of his files but they were in WMV format, and vegas only reads AVI. what i need is either a way for me to change the formats so that they work, through windows, or freeware. any one have any solutions?
