Title: Retrieving Outlook files
Post by: aangie on September 07, 2008, 12:52:43 PM
My computer just crashed with all my names, adresses, phone numbers and much more. I have installed Outlook 2002 but cannot link my Outlook data files created in Outlook 2000 (which I no longer have) into Outlook 2002. I know the data is sitting in my retrieved files somewhere. Any ideas please?

What did you do when your computer "crashed"?  How did you recover and get your system working again?

Have you searched your hard drive for a .pst file?

It got a virus so my sons helped by installing a new hard drive, new virus software, new windows, new outlook, new MS Office etc, so the new HDD was virus free. We do not want to search the old hard drive where all the program files are for fear of picking up the virus. My documents were in a seperate HDD and therefore retreived to add in to the new HDD. I have everything installed now but as the Outlook I have is  version 2002 and the old one I used to create the files was probably 2000 they seem to be incompatible.
Yes we searched for a .pst file but this is where everything went weird. I think it found some .pst files but when we tried the next step it said it couldn't find them. When we tried something else it said " no I can't do that as you already have them". If you can take me through the .pst process from the beginning I can tell you what happens when we do this.  My boys are now gone so I will need step by step instructions I'm afraid. I will be eternally grateful if you can help :), thanks.

Norton 360

 :-\

So basically you don't have any good protection at all. (according to my experience and our Malware Specialists opinion).

If you want, you can keep Norton 360 but there are other better free alternatives.

Have you tried performing a scan on the other hard drive yet?

Yes we searched for a .pst file .... I think it found some .pst files but when we tried the next step it said it couldn't find them.
Where did find them, on the old HDD, the new one, or both?  What is this "next step" you're talking about?

Sorry I'm a beginner and don't know how or where they found the .pst files. Would you be able to tell me how to find them again, step by step?
Then if it doesn't work I can see for myself where it went wrong and then ask you again what I might do next? :-\

In Windows XP, right click on Start and select Search.  Click the drop down arrow for the "Look in" box and select Browse.  Select My Computer and proceed with the search.

Do you find .pst files in multiple locations?  Where are they?

Thanks. I have found Outlook.pst in C drive, thats the new one. I moved all the document files from the old drive onto C so that seems OK so far.
How do I put them in the Oulook programme please? Sorry to be so thick!

So, you found the new .pst.  What about the old one?

See http://www.howto-outlook.com/howto/backupandrestore.htm#Import_pst-file and follow the procedure for Restore through the Import and Export Wizard
