I have a new Dell Inspiron 530s. A gift from Dell it has Vista , 500GB HD, E 2200 CPU and 3GB OF memory. It is starting to hang and after I have been on the net for a hour or so the start button wont work. I will have to turn off the computer with the power switch. I have no support from DEll so I hope you can help. Dell sucks.

If you have a "new" Dell, why no Dell support?
What do you mean "Starting to hang?"
-
Gift from Dell?
-
Some people don't like Vista, even before they start to use it :)
-
It is starting to hang and after I have been on the net for a hour or so the start button wont work.
hmm, sounds like lack of proper internet security?
-
OK i'm confused which usually doesn't take a whole heck of alot...
Are we blaming Dell or Vista here ? ?
-
Both. The first blame is valid, the second one, not :)
-
I made the mistake of buying a Dell some 3 years ago and had a lot of trouble out of it. In the resent past it was relay bad. They had replaced all most every thing in it and decided to send me a new computer to replace it. I am now having problems with the new one and they will not support it because the support for the old one ran out. They didn't tell me I needed to buy new support. I didn't think a new computer needed fixed. What I mean by the start button is the windows logo. When you put the courser on it and click nothing comes up. So you can't get to programs or turn the computer off. So to turn the computer off you have to use the power butten.
-
I think this will be helpful: http://windows.about.com/od/windowsforbeginners/ss/vista_interface.htm
What about the "hang?"
-
Watch your language....LOL
-
By hang I mean some times when I am in a program it will stop working. I hit ctrl alt delt and restart the program and ever thing works fine. I have had the computer about 6 or so weeks. I have Live one care for protection. I have all the up dates installed that I have been told about. Oh yes it has sp1. The hang or stop has only accrued may be 5 times sense I have had the computer.
-
I have Live one care for protection
Not the best choice.
Did you check computer temperatures?
-
No I didn't. I don't have that software on the Dell. I have it installed on the computers that I built. It came on the Intel CD.
-
Get SpeedFan: http://www.almico.com/sfdownload.php
-
Temp 1-34C Temp 2-42C Temp 3-12C Temp 4-31C core0 Temp5-32C core1
-
That looks good.
Any particular program, that hangs up?
-
It just hung up on speedfan's page when I tried the down load. I hit the wrong butten and then hit the other one. I had to close every thing out and start over. When it hung I hit ctrl alt delt and got out of every thing. Then it hung on a White screen and I hit the start butten and closed it down and started over and every thing worked fine. I think this time was my fault by hitting the wrong butten then hitting an other
-
Does this 'hanging' continue in Safe Mode (http://www.computerhope.com/issues/chsafe.htm)?
-
Any particular program, that hangs up?
-
The hang happens on different programs. The hang does not bother me as much as the start butten not working. As far as will it happen in safe mode I have no idea. I have never tried to work in safe mode. I don't know when it is going to hang so I wouldn't know when to start in safe mode.
-
as the start butten not working
You never told us about it.
-
Yes I did. It is in the first post. When you start the computer and it loads to the desk top you put the cursor on the windows logo and click and your choice of programs come up. That butten will not work after I have been on the net for a couple of hours. You click on it and nothing happens. At that point I have to turn the computer off with the power switch.
-
I assume, you don't have any Vista DVD?
-
Yes I have two. The one that came with the Dell and the one I bought for the wife's computer. They both have Vista Home Premium on them.
-
What kind of DVDs are they? Recovery DVD, or full version?
-
Full version.
-
Very well, then.
Run sfc: http://vistasupport.mvps.org/system_file_checker.htm
-
I ran SFC and was told, Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them. I put in the OS disk in and ran the scan again. I got the same mesage. I was also told details are in CBS log.
-
Can you post the log?
-
I tried to bring it up, no joy. You will have to explain how to get it.
-
The CBS.log file is located in the C:\Windows\Logs\CBS folder.
-
I typed in what you gave me in the search box on the start tab and I got nothing. I typed it in command prompt and still I got nothing. In both places I was told that there was no such file. If there is any place Else to try, I don't know about it. Then there is a lot I don't know about computers.
-
Open Windows Explorer, and navigate to C:\Windows\Logs\CBS:

-
I must first say thank you for your time and patients. I did as you showed and didn't come with the same thing. What I got was this.
CBS.bld file BLD size 2KB date 11/02/06
CBS file text size 11318KB date 09/08/08
CBS persist file text size 52070KB date 08/08/08
If I double click on eather text files I get access denied. What next?
-
You're doing fine. You're confused, because of stupid Micro$oft.
In Windows Explorer, go Tools>Folder Options>View tab, and remove checkmark from: "Hide extension for known file types".
Then, instead of "CBS", you'll see "CBS.log " file.
Open it with a Notepad.
-
I went to start butten clicked on explore and couldn't find tools. I typed in tools and got nothing. What am I doing wrong? Isn't windows explorer just the tree view of the software and hardware?
-
Start>All Programs>Accessories>Windows Explorer
-
I clicked on Windows Explorer and couldn't find tools.
-
I clicked on Windows Explorer and couldn't find tools.
Broni is referring to the menu bar, not an item you'll find in the treeview.
I'd provide a screenshot, but I'd just end up confusing matters since I'm no using Vista.
-

-
Well now I don't feel so foolish, I don't have that tool bar. No [junk] it isn't there.
-
How do I get that tool bar to show?
-
Remove the "s" word in your last reply.
You can toggle the tool bar with the ALT key.
-
Another crap from Micro$oft. I have no idea why it's hidden by default.
Click Organize>Layout, checkmark "Menu bar".
... and, as drmsucks said, watch your mouth.
-
Remove the "s" word in your last reply.
I did remove it.
"I Shooter", we try and keep the language on the forums at a neutral level to avoid causing offense to people. We would greatly appreciate it if you could refrain from using such words :-)
-
I am very sorry for the S word. It wont happen again. I have my new computer hooked up, not the Dell I will get back and try what you said as soon as I get it hooked up. Some time to night. Thank you for your time.
-
I did as you asked. I now get CBS.log but it still tells me access is denied. I tried double clicking on it and open with note pad.
-
User Account Control denies access to stuff like that.
Do one of two things:
1) Take ownership of the file:
- Right-click on the file, left-click Properties.
- Click the "Security" tab. Click "Edit". On the UAC prompt, click "allow"
- Click "Advanced."
- Click the "Owner" tab.
- Change the owner to "Administrators."
- Click Apply, then OK. Again, click "allow" on the UAC prompt.
- Try opening it.
or
2) Turn off User Account Control for now.
- Click Start -> Control Panel.
- In Classic View, double-click "User Accounts."
- Click the check box "Turn User Account Control on or off." On the prompt, click "Allow."
- When asked to restart your computer, say Yes.
- After reboot, the computer will nag you about UAC being turned off. That's okay for the time being.
- Try opening up the cbs.log now.
-
killerb255 is most likely right.
You can get permanent "Take Ownership" option under right click menu, if you follow this: http://www.winmatrix.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=13157
-
I got the file up. Now you are going to have tell me how to get it on this site. The copy and paste isn't highlighted. It is a lot of stuff. I copied it to a file in documents.
-
Yeah, it may be huge file.
Upload it here: http://www.uploadbigfiles.net/, and post download link.
-
This is what they gave me. http://www.uploadbigfiles.net/download.php?file=596CBS.log
-
The link doesn't work.
-
I just came form it. Didn't it down load? It said that the file size was 12.MB some thing. I typed it in. I didn't use the link. It worked.
-
When I click on your link, it says:
Sorry, I can't find this file.
-
I don't know why the link on the above post wont work. I just came from the site. I had to type in the address in the address bar and I was sent to the site.
-
Try to upload it one more time.
-
This is what they gave me. http://www.uploadbigfiles.net/dwonload.php?file=596CBS.log
You have a typo in the hyperlink.
Dwonload? :) Shouldn't it be Download? :)
Let's try that:
http://www.uploadbigfiles.net/download.php?file=596CBS.log
-
Nice catch :)
The problem is, that if I use corrected link, and click on download button, for some strange reason, the file starts to open in my Firefox, and maybe because it's quiet large, it crashes my browser.
-
What? You don't understand a problem? That is odd. I wish I could unsubscribe from this thread, seeing as how I can't help.
-
I just uploaded my CBS.log (46MB) to see how the link looks like:
http://www.uploadbigfiles.net/download.php?file=417CBS.log
I'll try to download it now, and see what happens.
-
Hmm....same thing...opens in Firefox.
Trying upload to: http://www.flyupload.com/

Did the same thing to me as well...
I Shooter:
Try zipping the file first, then upload the resulting .zip file.
-
Maybe some problem with their service.
Still loading to the other site. We'll see what happens there.
-
OK. New link: http://www.flyupload.com/?fid=177861111
-
This one downloads with no problem.
-
I Shooter, try this: http://www.flyupload.com/
-
Try this. http://www.flyupload.com/?fid=319360635 I hope that this is it.
-
That's it. It's downloading. I'll take a look at it tomorrow. Bed time is coming :)
-
Very good. Thank you for your time. Sorry for the type O. I will have to have a talk with my fingers.
-
Broni did you find out any thing? I would have gotten back to you sooner but we lost our roof in a wind storm and had to replace it. This is the first time I have really had any time to do any thing.
-

Wow - trust that everything is okay with you and your family.
-
OMG....I'm glad, you're OK :)
I still have that file, but since you were not here, I didn't take a look.
Weekend is coming so keep reminding me here.
Just reply, and I'll get email notification.
-
Every one is fine. We were sitting in the kitchen talking about the wind and all the sudden the roof came off. It flew about one hundred yards in to a field below the house. I had to replace the hole thing. The only thing that was left was the joist and drywall. I still haven't gotten all the insulation cleaned up yet.
-
I went through "sfc" log (huge text file - over 13MB), and it indicated, that some Windows Sidebar files, especially "setting.ini", are corrupt, and sfc wasn't able to fix it, because backup (source) files for Windows Sidebar are corrupt, too.
If you use Windows Sidebar, disable it from startups, and see, if it'll cure your problem.
-
I will try that. Is there any way to replace the files from the Vista disk?
-
You sure can, but first, I'd like to see, if this IS Sidebar problem.
-
I will turn it off. I have to tell you that I have had no problems sense I ran the FSC scan. Is it possible that the FSC scan fixed it. I understand that the file still has a problem. I was just wondering if the scan could have fixed the start butten and it locking up. It didn't happen a lot to start with but it hasn't happened for some time now. Just wondering.
-
Is it possible that the FSC scan fixed it.
sfc, that is....possible
So, what's your current computer status?
-
It is working fine now. As I said from the start this only happens every now and then. I turned off gadgets.
-
I hope, it's gonna stay that way :)
