Title: Dell? Just to much.
Post by: I Shooter on September 07, 2008, 08:00:36 PM
I have a new Dell Inspiron 530s. A gift from Dell it has Vista , 500GB HD, E 2200 CPU and 3GB OF memory. It is starting to hang and after I have been on the net for a hour or so the start button wont work. I will have to turn off the computer with the power switch. I have no support from DEll so I hope you can help. Dell sucks.

If you have a "new" Dell, why no Dell support?

What do you mean "Starting to hang?"

Some people don't like Vista, even before they start to use it :)

OK i'm confused which usually doesn't take a whole heck of alot...
Are we blaming Dell or Vista here ? ?

Post by: Broni on September 07, 2008, 08:44:03 PM
Both. The first blame is valid, the second one, not :)

I made the mistake of buying a Dell some 3 years ago and had a lot of trouble out of it. In the resent past it was relay bad. They had replaced all most every thing in it and decided to send me a new computer to replace it. I am now having problems with the new one and they will not support it because the support for the old one ran out. They didn't tell me I needed to buy new support. I didn't think a new computer needed fixed. What I mean by the start button is the windows logo. When you put the courser on it and click nothing comes up. So you can't get to programs or turn the computer off. So to turn the computer off you have to use the power butten.

By hang I mean some times when I am in a program it will stop working. I hit ctrl alt delt and restart the program and ever thing works fine. I have had the computer about 6 or so weeks. I have Live one care for protection. I have all the up dates installed that I have been told about. Oh yes it has sp1. The hang or stop has only accrued may be 5 times sense I have had the computer.

No I didn't. I don't have that software on the Dell. I have it installed on the computers that I built. It came on the Intel CD.

It just hung up on speedfan's page when I tried the down load. I hit the wrong butten and then hit the other one. I had to close every thing out and start over. When it hung I hit ctrl alt delt and got out of every thing. Then it hung on a White screen and I hit the start butten and closed it down and started over and every thing worked fine. I think this time was my fault by hitting the wrong butten then hitting an other

The hang happens on different programs. The hang does not bother me as much as the start butten not working. As far as will it happen in safe mode I have no idea. I have never tried to work in safe mode. I don't know when it is going to hang so I wouldn't know when to start in safe mode.

Yes I did. It is in the first post. When you start the computer and it loads to the desk top you put the cursor on the windows logo and click and your choice of programs come up. That butten will not work after I have been on the net for a couple of hours. You click on it and nothing happens. At that point I have to turn the computer off with the power switch.

I ran SFC and was told, Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them. I put in the OS disk in and ran the scan again. I got the same mesage. I was also told details are in CBS log.

The CBS.log file is located in the C:\Windows\Logs\CBS folder.

I typed in what you gave me in the search box on the start tab and I got nothing. I typed it in command prompt and still I got nothing. In both places I was told that there was no such file. If there is any place Else to try, I don't know about it. Then there is a lot I don't know about computers.

I must first say thank you for your time and patients. I did as you showed and didn't come with the same thing. What I got was this.

CBS.bld                                   file BLD                size 2KB                date      11/02/06

CBS                                        file text                 size 11318KB        date      09/08/08

CBS persist                            file text                  size 52070KB        date      08/08/08

If I double click on eather text files I get access denied. What next?

You're doing fine. You're confused, because of stupid Micro$oft.
In Windows Explorer, go Tools>Folder Options>View tab, and remove checkmark from: "Hide extension for known file types".
Then, instead of "CBS", you'll see "CBS.log " file.
Open it with a Notepad.

Broni is referring to the menu bar, not an item you'll find in the treeview.

I'd provide a screenshot, but I'd just end up confusing matters since I'm no using Vista.

User Account Control denies access to stuff like that.

Do one of two things:

1) Take ownership of the file:
- Right-click on the file, left-click Properties.
- Click the "Security" tab.  Click "Edit".  On the UAC prompt, click "allow"
- Click "Advanced."
- Click the "Owner" tab.
- Change the owner to "Administrators."
- Click Apply, then OK.  Again, click "allow" on the UAC prompt.
- Try opening it.

or

2) Turn off User Account Control for now.
- Click Start -> Control Panel.
- In Classic View, double-click "User Accounts."
- Click the check box "Turn User Account Control on or off."  On the prompt, click "Allow."
- When asked to restart your computer, say Yes.
- After reboot, the computer will nag you about UAC being turned off.  That's okay for the time being.
- Try opening up the cbs.log now.

I had to replace the hole thing. The only thing that was left was the joist and drywall. I still haven't gotten all the insulation cleaned up yet.

I went through "sfc" log (huge text file - over 13MB), and it indicated, that some Windows Sidebar files, especially "setting.ini", are corrupt, and sfc wasn't able to fix it, because backup (source) files for Windows Sidebar are corrupt, too.
If you use Windows Sidebar, disable it from startups, and see, if it'll cure your problem.
