Title: Laptop Problems.
Post by: the webcam guy on September 25, 2008, 07:52:39 PM
Had evilfantasy help me clean up the maleware on my computer yet still have some problems. He told me to come on over to this forum so here I am. My problems are that I can't drag and drop files of any kind into folders on the desktop unless they are opened, saved pictures to the desktop or anywhere don't appear with a preview of the image as they are on the desktop, and everytime I open a folder it opens in a new window even after the rededit and folder options have been changed.

Link to my other thread where I was helped by evil is here:

Ran the .reg file and restarted laptop. Still unable to drag and drop anything into other folders. Do you guys use logmein or a program that you can fix the problem yourselves taking control of my laptop?

I changed the shell some. I have a backup cd if that is what you mean. I would like to avoid that though.

Unfortunately whenever there are numerous regedits sometimes it's the only way back.
Sorry i don't have any other creative ideas.
BTW what method do you use backing up the Registry ? ?
You really need an effective one if you insist on playing in there.
I use ERUNT.

I usually just double clicked the .reg files and thought it did everything itself.

not sure about your new problem- but I might be able to find out something about your folder drag problem.

I'm gonna ask you to look at a particular key with Regedit- don't change anything though.

Navigate to: HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\folder\DragDropHandlers

Export that key, and attach it to a Post- (or paste it, if it's contents are small).

Problem with the Fn is solved. Maverick in free help chat helped me.

As for what you said there is no DragDropHandlers. See:

As for what you said there is no DragDropHandlers. See:

Well there's our problem... Windows simply doesn't know what to do when you drag something over a folder. I was going to  export my DragDropHandlers Key, but I realized I'm using XP and you are using Vista. Probably not a good idea to mix and match keys between them.

If anybody was kind enough to export that key from their own working Vista installations for you, you might be able to get Drag&Drop working properly again.

As for the other problem- I'm guessing it has to do with your laptop's included software- keyboard drivers, and so forth, which handle the Fn keys. I can do no more then suspect (the serious error report tells me nothing, aside from the fact an error occured).

Yeah I have to hope on that that someone with Vista visits the thread.

And another problem has just occurred. I feel like my computer is turning against me. It just stopped me from being able to open any folders on the desktop and stopped the sub commands in the start menu from working. Control Panel, Network, Connect to, Default Programs, etc. They do nothing when I click on them.

Interesting... those are all regarded as folders...

Strange how things are getting worse though- It's safe to assume that you haven't done any further dabbling in the registry (changing settings in an attempt to resolve your issues, for example?)

Actually, in Vista the key location is little bit different:
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Folder\shellex\ContextMenuHandlers

Key attached...

XP has a ContextMenuHandlers key too- but I take it you don't have a DragDropHandlers key either.

The key didn't work. Everything was still the same after I clicked the .reg and all. I took a picture of that place in the regedit.

I tried another .reg file in this other thread. It's attached. Applications and winrar work it's only folders on the desktop and the options in the start menu that stopped working. Everything that doesn't work when clicked on on the start menu is here though everything in All Programs works:

Also I found something weird about the compressed zip folder I made on the desktop. Whereas I can't drag anything into a regular folder it let me drag the .reg file into it even though the .reg stayed on the desktop it copied it into it.

I also have tried the .reg file at this site. The FD32.zip

That isn't really that weird- a compressed folder is actually a ZIP file and so the dragdrophandler (well, contextmenuhandler for vista) for .ZIP files will be invoked...

I seea dragdrophandlers key in there now- (beneath ContextMenuHandlers) what is within that key?

hmm, you have the same CLSID as I do under DragDropHandlers...

This one has me stumped windows won't do what the registry so clearly has set forth.

one last ditch set of commands you could try:

regsvr32 shell32.dll
regsvr32 shdocvw.dll

failing that (might work- was worth a shot in my book)

Have you tried "SFC /scannow" in command prompt, or a repair install of Windows Vista?

Got an error on that second command.

Gonna try the SFC right now.

Don't worry about that error dialog- probably just a change between XP and Vista I suppose.

The log is over 7 mb long and won't let me attach it plus when I try to paste everything in the log into a message on here to post it freezes my computer then times out the post when I try to post it.

That was the log from the sfc /scannow.

I reformatted my laptop and works fine so that's that.

In Vista it's called CBS.log (don't mistake it with TV station :D)
I'm not sure, if it exist in XP.

According to this: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/928228, I think, it's native to Vista only.
It'd be very handy in any Windows version.
