Hey guys,
I have been recommended this site by someone who had troubles once and I was wondering if you could make my troubles go away.
I got this new computer and it runs with Vista. It worked flawlessly for the past few days/weeks but then it didn't work as well... Everytime I start it up, i keep getting this ChkDisk sequence which always hangs at 65%. The longest i've left it is an hour or so and it still didn't load up. Please help if you can.
Many Thanks,
Steven ^^

Find out what brand hard drive is in that machine...
Travel to the manuf. site and DLoad their FREE diagnostics.
Follow their instructions on creating a bootable CD with the diagnostics.
Insert the CD hwn created and re-boot.
Run the long test and report back with the findings.
-
I cant seem to burn the thing onto the CD
-
Use a different computer to download and create the CD...if you can.
-
Thats the problem... I cant -.- I only have the laptop and computer and the computer is the one im trying to fix and the laptop didnt work -.-
-
So no one else you know has a computer with a burner in it ? ?
-
Ah sorry I forgot that I can use other peoples computers-.-
After I burned it what do I do then?
-
Run the long test....this will tell you if that hard drive can be trusted or not.
I'd use the machine as little as possible til we figure out what is wrong.
-
I cant really use the machine because that ChkDisk thing always runs before I log in and it hangs so it wont complete itself.
-
Just out of interest, is there any alternative ways I can repair my PC?
-
Please do as Patio has told you.
You boot off the CD and it checks the drive for errors. Until we know if the drive is damaged or in good running order we can't tell you what to do next.
Thanks!
-
Spoiler is correct...the bootdisk takes you directly to the diagnostics...it never sees Windows therefore chkdsk will not run.
We can only help if you want to follow the steps we outline.
We're not here to waste your time and efforts...the suggestions follow a natural progression.
-
just wondering, I thought it was possible o skip the chkdsk before 10 seconds?
-
It is. Irrelevant in this instance however.
All it boots to is the diagnostics...it doesn't even see or get to the Windows startup.
-
Okay, I will stick to Patio's advice and post my results on here, thanks guys.
-
Okay I burned SeaToolsDOS207EURO.iso onto my disk (Finally) Do I have to insert it into my PC and wait for it to do its magic or do I have to switch it on manually by logging onto an account, going onto the disc etc?
-
When you first turn you computer on you will see a message to press a certain key to enter setup. It is usually an F key or esc or del. Press that key as it is first starting up. Pay attention, as the message may flash very quickly.
This will take you into BIOS. Here, you want to look for Boot order, or Boot sequence, or maybe even just Boot.
You want to set you CD drive as the first boot device. You, usually, press the plus and minus keys to move you devices up and down.
Now insert the CD into the drive and exit setup SAVING changes.
-
Okay thanks, I'll try it and post the results onto here.
Gee, you guys are my light at the end of the tunnel... I feel kinda bad for getting this help for free... If this works I'll donate some notes to this site ^^
-
I done what you said (at last) but i still get the ChkDisk thing. What do i do now?
-
Did you get into setup?
Did you change your boot order?
What program did you use to burn the diagnostic disk?
-
If you simply burned the .iso it won't be bootable...check the Seagate site again for FULL instructions on creating the bootable CD.
-
I actually don't know the website, one of your guys on the live chat told me the link to download the .iso so i dont know where to go. i know the harddrive is maxtor though and ive been on their website but i couldnt find the seagate site and where to find the instructions... any idea?
-
Go to this page: http://www.seagate.com/www/en-us/support/downloads/seatools/ and download SeaTools for DOS.
There's an instruction link on that page, as well.

-
ok i will try that
-
is there any chance i can use a different type of burner other than the ones listed in the how to burn an iso image link? because i got an lg burner and i dont have any others.
-
LG is simply the model of your CD burner...what software program do you use to burn CDs?
-
I dont think i have a burner... and i cant really afford to pay for one. are there any free burners i can download or something?
-
I dont think i have a burner - and I cant really afford to buy one. Are there any burners i can download for free or something?

Okay I burned SeaToolsDOS207EURO.iso onto my disk (Finally) Do I have to insert it into my PC and wait for it to do its magic or do I have to switch it on manually by logging onto an account, going onto the disc etc?
What did you use when you did the above?
To be honest...I think you're playing games here...and I, for one...don't like to play games...
-
I used my sisters laptop to burn the previous thing onto a cd. And fortunatly, im not playing games. Its pretty hard for someone whos not familiar with computers to do this so please bare with me.
-
CDBurnerXP (http://www.snapfiles.com/reviews/CDBurnerXP_Pro/cdburnerxp.html)
-
Thanks, by the way, is it fine to us any CDs? Cuz I originally used one of those CD's called 'Tuff Disks' and it didnt work on my first attempt to burn the previous .iso.
-
You can use a CD/R or a CD/R/W disc...with a R/W disc, you will have to format it.
Also...when burning an ISO image to CD, make sure you make the CD bootable if the image isn't already.
-
how do i do that?
-
Read the documentation that came with the link to the software I referred you to.
-
Okay, thanks. I'll post the results as soon as i try it.
-
You're welcome...
Good luck!
-
Hi guys, I've been doing what you've told me for the ChkDisk thing but theres another problem. Now, whenever I startup, it always says:
"BOOTMGR is Missing.
Press Esc+Alt+Delete to reboot"
I'm not sure what to do... Any idea, guys? Thanks :)
-
I've merged your newest Post...starting a new Topic would just confuse the issue...
-
Okay, thanks.
By the way, is the missing BOOTMGR related to the ChkDisk thing?
-
Read this: Bootmgr.exe missing (http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20080125135215AAqB67d)
-
Which repair do I use? System restore? Startup Repair? etc.
I tried using Startup Repair but it didnt work, the link told me to click "repair" but I couldn't find it anyone on the list and I don't think the person meant startup repair since he mentions using it if the first option didn't work (Startup repsir didn't work either, mind you)
-
I can't follow these instructions at all... Sorry.
-
Y'know if people say go to BIOS, is Advanced BIOS the same? And when I try reparing with the Vista disk, I don't get a list - it's blank so I have to search for drives myself but when I do, I cant find any... Any ideas?
-
Hi, it's been a while since I've posted the last message and still no replies... I tried that thing you advised me to do but it did not work... Any ideas, please?
-
Did you ever get the hard drive diagnostics disk to work?
-
Probably not...i would guess.
-
I wouldn't know because just as I finished running the long test on the new .iso disc under saviors instructions, the Bootmgr thing came up and now I'm having a bit of trouble sorting it out.
-
When you performed the long test...did your hard drive pass diagnostics? That's the main question...
If it did not, then you need to let us know where the diagnostics failed. You'll either receive a "pass" or "fail" when performing the diagnostics.
As far as, your bootmgr.exe issue...your operating system (Vista) is letting you know that there is a problem with the boot sector...so Vista will not load until you fix the issue. The last link I gave you was to information on how to fix this...and I quote:
Insert your Vista install disk and restart your system. Press any key when prompted to begin running the dvd. Wait for it to give you a list of choices. This may take a while as it often stays a blank screen for some time. Choose "repair", and the setup will auto detect your operating system. It will also fix your bootmgr.exe at this point. If it does not, you can go on to the next screen and choose "startup repair".
Granted...this is done after you configure your computer to boot from your optical drive, which is done in BIOS. All you have to do is boot into BIOS and configure your optical drive to be the first boot device.
-
I set CDRom to first priority, is that correct so far?
-
yes
-
But you still haven't told us whether or not your hard drive passed or failed diagnostics...
So, if you're trying to repair the bootmgr.exe issue, it may be moot if your hard rive is toast...
-
how long does it often take for the list to load up when i selected "repair"?
-
The test passed, it said it has completed so hopefully the harddrive isnt toast... yet.
-
Just give it a few minutes and follow the screen prompts...
Glad to hear the drive isn't toast...yet.
-
I've been waiting for the list for like 10 mins now, shall I move on to Startup repair (again)?
-
Is your computer still copying files? Or has it stopped completely?
-
Well, when i selected Repair it just moved me on to the bit where there is supposed to be the list but it didn't say anything like still loading - All it said was "Next" or "Load Driver" so i assume it stopped completely
-
Did you click Next?
-
Not yet, I was waiting to see what you would advise me to do - maybe I could find it manually in "Load Driver"? Or should I go click "Next"?
-
Just click "Next"
-
Okay, what should I do now?
-
What does your screen tell you to do? What buttons do you see? Are you back to the original screen?
If the process is completed and your back to the original screen you were at when you chose the repair, you need to close out of that...set your BIOS to boot from the hard drive first...then reboot your computer.
-
If the repair didn't work and you're still experiencing the same problem...try the Startup Repair option...
Use this link...it has pictures: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial148.html
-
The Screen Gives me These Options:
Choose a Recovery Tool
Operation Unknown on (Unknown) Local Disc.
Startup Repair
System Restore
Windows Complete PC Restore
Windows memory diagnostic tool
Command Promt [Shut Down] [Restart]
-
On Fig. 4, it highlights Microsoft Windows Vista, on my screen, it doesn't show Microsoft Windows Vista. Is that normal or a problem?
-
Remove the cd from its tray and click Restart...
Again...if the repair didn't work...follow the directions from the last link I sent you about using Startup Repair.
Remember...you should set the BIOS to start from the hard drive. However, if it there's nothing in the cd tray, it should bypass it and boot directly from the hard drive.
Edit: If it doesn't say Windows Vista, what does it say?
-
It doesnt say anything, it stays blank.
-
By the way, I only see "Hard Disk" not hard Drive. Is that it? (Or the same)
-
Right now...I'm more than positive that you're yanking my chain, my friend...
I'm sure someone else will be more than happy to come along and help you.
-
Sorry if I'm not being able to follow your instructions, but I'm only 12 years old. I am just trying to find out how to fix my computer.
-
Hard Drive and Hard Disk are the same
-
I set the hard drive to first priority but it just takes me straight to BootMGR is missing
Press CTRL+ALT+DEL to Restart
-
If you're only 12 years old...then I'm married to Paris Hilton...
Listen...
Use the Startup Repair link (with pictures - since you're only 12) I gave you to fix your computer. If that doesn't work...you may need to reinstall the operating system.
-
Firstly - I am REALLY 12 years old. I will give you the link to my myspace if you want and second, is there anywhere I can find the file I need to load by using Load Driners e.g. C:?
