Post by: Sammel on October 24, 2008, 09:42:18 AM
I have Windows Xp Pro sevice pack 3.
When I use Internet Explorer to go Windows Update site it opens only white empty page.
That white page has some source code:

Other pages work as they should.
If I go to Windows update using Firefox, I get page saying I should IE 7...
I am not sure but I think that I get automatical updates normally.
I have tried to add Windows update to trusted site but it didn't help.

What should I do to fix it?

I'd install the JRE ( Java Runtime Environment ) from http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp (http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp) ( sun microsystems ). Your system may be lacking java script support.

The log is clean.
Close IE.
Go Start>All Programs>Accessories>System Tools, and click on Internet Explorer (no add-ons). Same thing?

Did you: Uncheck the "require server verification" checkbox

If you did, in IE, go Tools>Internet Options>Advanced tab, click on "Reset" button.
Restart computer.

Do you use router?

I have HomePNA (Housing community shares one ADLS connection with it to everyone).
So i  assume that there must be router in data center.

I did that. It helped little.
Now the page opens. But I still have something wrong.

[Error number: 0x8DDD0004]
The website has encountered a problem and cannot display the page you are trying to view. Take the following steps to try solving the problem:
Refresh the page.
In Internet Explorer, delete your Temporary Internet Files by going to the Tools menu and clicking Internet Options.
Close and then re-open Internet Explorer.

Internet Explorer (Add-ons Disabled) mode only prevents the use of ActiveX controls, including those used by the Microsoft Update website. To get updates using this browser mode, you need to turn on Automatic Updates on your computer or visit the Windows Update website.

If these steps don’t work, try visiting the site later or using the resources provided below

I tried refreshing and restarting and deleting Temorary Internet Files.
Should I still do someting to IE settings?

I'm wondering if that router has certain ports blocked...

My older computer has same kind of connection and in it Windows update works as it should. If it is about router wouldn't it effect both computers?

Good point...

One possibility down.

When did this start happening?  Did this happen IMMEDIATELY after SP3 was installed?  Did Windows Update work while it had SP2?  Are you using IE6 or IE7?  If you're using IE7, then was IE7 installed before or after SP3?

Title: Re: Windows update is not working.
Post by: Sammel on October 31, 2008, 08:54:02 AM
It started after I reinstalled Windows. (My old hard drive broke)
But I don't think that I tried Windows Update before installing SP3.
I was still using IE 6 when I tried opening Windows update, it said I need to have IE 7.
So I downloaded it. But page didn't open with it.

When I Googled error code Windows update site gave me last time I found this:
http://www.microsoft.com/communities/newsgroups/en-us/default.aspx?dg=microsoft.public.windowsupdate&tid=6acf0fe9-2379-48cd-812e-e46a9271cb03&p=1 (http://www.microsoft.com/communities/newsgroups/en-us/default.aspx?dg=microsoft.public.windowsupdate&tid=6acf0fe9-2379-48cd-812e-e46a9271cb03&p=1)
Do you think that would help me?

I also found this: http://update.microsoft.com/windowsupdate/v6/showarticle.aspx?articleid=36&ln=en&IsMu=False (http://update.microsoft.com/windowsupdate/v6/showarticle.aspx?articleid=36&ln=en&IsMu=False) I seem to missing thing called WUWebControl. Could that be my problem?

3. Now check in IE tools\manage add-ons (Win XP SP2 only) making sure that WuWebControlClass is
enabled. (Select "Add-ons that have been used by Internet Explorer" in the "Show:" drop down list)

Both links say that I should have WuWebControlClass enabled. But I don't have it at all.
How could I get it enabled?

Run all those REGSVR32 commands, and see, if any of them will be unsuccessful.

Hello.
I was at holiday for few weeks and didn't have time to do anything about this.
But when I tested Windows update today it worked little.
Now I get to Microsoft Genuine Advantage test.
But it says that I should accept ActiveX component. But it wont ask about it. So I can't get past that test.

What should I do now?

Thing like that should appear and ask about ActiveX ( I don't know what it is called in English)
The page says that ActiveX must accepted before Windows Genuine test can be done.
But nothing happens. IE doesn't ask about ActiveX.

In IE, go Tools>Internet Options>Security tab, click on "Custom level" button.
Make sure, that your ActiveX settings look like this:

Title: Re: Windows update is not working.

I did that but it didn't help. But I used troubleshooting.
It gave following results:

All with green text are ok.
But "ActiveX for checking Windows" is not loaded.

Things that are ok are:
Active command lines are enabled.
Show pictures is enabled.
Computers time and date are right.
Cookies are enabled.
ActiveX components are enabled.
ActiveX for checking Office is loaded.
ActiveX for check guide is loaded.

Does that mean I have still something wrong with ActiveX settings?
I tried to make them to look like same as picture you gave. But I could have made mistake translating them.

I just figured out how I can get this page in English.
This is page that wont ask about ActiveX.
