Would be nice to have this feature but not sure if it could be done since it's part of the browser. What you may want to consider is using an IRC client, which would allow you to connect to the chat and could flash on the toolbar when there is activity and/or make a sound if you wanted.

Or the Chatzilla Firefox Add-On.

I will be making a tutorial on how to use it with CH Chat in a few days.
