I never bothered with defragging for about a year. Lol, no surprise there, thats when I got Vista.
The only drivers that support my hardware only work with Vista. So I can't downgrade to XP. I tried and then realized the drivers were incompatible.
So now I have a fresh system, I think I'll use this, sounds good. At least I can schedule it for 4am or whenever I decide to go to bed.

1 Question about smart defrag.should sd be set to start with windows? I noticed the auto defrag.runs once in a while thanks

I have it set to start with Windows. That's the whole idea.
After an initial defrag, which took a while, I have maybe 1 defrag a day, which is totally unnoticeable, resource-wise, and it's very quick one.

My last one was at 12:37PM today.
Do you see any impact on your computer, like being slower, when defrag runs?

No it doesn't slow down .just seems like it analyzes the complete HDD and takes some time doing that..Maybe that's normal

My last one started at 12:22PM, and it finished at 12:27PM - 5 minutes

Just to let you know in case you haven't found it, you can set it so it pauses or stops defragging if your CPU usage goes above ##%.
This helps prioritize other programs and applications.

Quick question- is it SUPPOSED to make my drive unbootable? >:(
All my boot files are corrupt- hal.dll, c_1252.nls, pci.sys...
I will return when I can get my XP install working- wish me luck....
(It might not be smartdefrag, or it could be some specific problem with my config...)

I'm using it and it works well for me. No problems, quite the contrary really. Only regret has to be not looking for it earlier. thanks for the link.

Yes I must revoke anything bad I said about it. It obviously wasn't Smartdefrag- it was just a coincidence that my problems arose right after rebooting after a three hour defrag.
I'm kind of afraid to run it again now, though.
Anyway- time to install my drivers :P

I don't have mine running in the background. I just start it up every few days at night before I go to bed. I set it so it shuts the computer down automatically.

I do have it running in the background.
First, initial defrag took couple of hours, but my last one, today, after having it running in the background for 3-4 days, took 8 sec!

I think what Patio was getting at was that the performance hit from running a program such as this in the background is more then the performance hit from accessing a fragmented hard drive.
Although it only actually defragments during idle time- all processes take up a base number timeslices regardless of what they are doing- this base level of time slices is determined by the priority of the process.
It is a good program- but if I do use it it will be for manual usage. I hadn't fragmented a single time since I installed XP on this 500GB drive 8 months ago, and I use the drive heavily- my fragmentation according to the program was only 0.06%... and yet it took 3 hours to complete the defragmentation.

After trying smart defrag a few days I went back to my jk defrag which I think does a better defrag job...To each his own I guess.. ;D

raxco perfect disk is pretty good, I tested out their trial but I didn't want to pay for it.
In fact, I believe that the defragmenter that comes built into windows vista is pretty good except that it should tell you it's progress so you know either what percentage is completed or the estimated time to completion of the defragmentation process.
And gladly, windows vista's defragmenter has an autopilot option so it automatically defragments on a schedule you can set up.

Hi everyone. Its been awhile but I had to respond to the smart defrag topic.
I've tried quite a few defraggers. smart defrag, auslogic etc. I was updating cc cleaner and notice piriform had a new defragger called defraggler. I've got to tell you, after running it one time I could not believe how well this defragger works. It is absolutely the best one I've tried yet. I only wish I could of took a before and after shot of it but I didn't think to do that. I talked my wife into installing it on her computer. By the way, she's not one for defragging often like I am but even as bad as hers was when she ran it once it looked as good as mine although it did take about 30 minutes to clean hers up. She could not believe hers could ever look that good. It would be good to see the experts here give it a try and comment on it. Thank you. midwestman76

What are you talking about, the user interface for defraggler? What aspect of it looked so good to her? ::)

Hi soybean, I was referring to how good it defragged her C:drive. she was running advanced windows care with there defragger, then she'd run auslogic defragger. After looking at the windows xp home defragmenter she still had fragments everywhere. then she ran the piriform defraggler and it just totally defragged her drive. happy belated thanks giving.

In my opinion, I think it's almost impossible to get a 0% fragmented drive. I think that 1% is pretty good and that's what I've been getting
But I'd have a defrag program on autopilot so I don't need to remember to defrag anyway.

Anyone else having a problem where Smart Defrag doesn't shut down the computer when you tell it to do so after defragging?
I am, and it ruins the point of me having this great program.

I'm using version 1.02 but I was not aware of that because I haven't tried using the auto-shutdown feature. Yeah, that glitch is going to a source of dissatisfaction to users wanting to use that feature. They'd better fix that soon.
