I am scoping out a good deal for Black Friday on AMAZON.com ONLY (I have a 'store' credit there)
Last year, I purchased (and returned) a HP desktop with 1GB and Vista Home Premium installed. It crashed 3x every day and after days and long hours on the phone with New Delhi India for HP support, I was finally told that the desktop I purchased was crashing because VISTA can NOT run smooth with only 1GB RAM. (It would have been nice if they did not sell a PC that would not work without tweeking!) Anyway, it was returned!
This was about a year ago and I thought maybe VISTA bugs were fixed. ??? The laptop I will most likely buy will have 1GB RAM (I can't afford a beefy laptop :'() It MUST have Wi-Fi. (Probably an Acer Aspire 5315-2698 15.4-inch Laptop (Intel Celeron 560 Processor, 1 GB RAM, 120 GB Hard Drive, Integrated Super-Multi Drive, Vista Premium ) (<---Any thoughts?)
Laptop will only be used for Email, Ebay and general Google searches. (No movies, music or games)
Anyway... My main question is CAN VISTA RUN PROPERLY WITH ONLY 1GB RAM INSTALLED? Will I be ok with the Acer's specs?
-
If you shop around, I'd bet you can find a laptop/notebook this year with 2GB for the same price or less than what you paid last year for the HP. Here's an Acer at Best Buy with 2GB of memory and it's sale priced now at $399. Presumably, this is a temporary pricing so check for details on expiration of sale if you're interested in this one. See Acer - Extensa Laptop with IntelŪ PentiumŪ Dual-Core Processor T3200 (http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=9119768&st=EX4630-4658&lp=1&type=product&cp=1&id=1218026347207&AID=10597222&PID=227502&SID=143745-n-10&URL=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.bestbuy.com%2Fsite%2Folspage.jsp%3FskuId%3D9119768%26st%3DEX4630-4658%26lp%3D1%26type%3Dproduct%26cp%3D1%26id%3D1218026347207&ref=39&loc=01#tabbed-customerreviews)
But, to answer your question, Windows Vista Home Premium can run reasonably well on 1GB. I bought a notebook PC in July 2008 with 1GB and have gotten along fine with it. And, it's a Compaq, which is now an HP product line. I have Office 2007 installed on it. I often have email, web browser, and one or more Office components (Word, Excel, etc.) open at the same time and it really works fine in that scenario.
I suspect you got poor advise from HP last year. While my notebook was under warranty, I had a few phone contacts with their support and, at times, it was rather frustrating. What they're not going to tell people who call for support is that the best thing you can do remove some of the proprietary software installed on the computer. For example, HP will install a multitiude of HP software. You're also likely to find Norton or McAfee Anti-virus software on them; both these products are resource hogs and degrade performance. There are better options, including freeware, for anti-virus protection.
All the computers do this, i.e. install a lot of extra software that you probably don't need. So, again, removing proprietary software that you really don't need is likely to improve your computer's performance. Here's a good reference: http://adrynalyne.spaces.live.com/blog/cns!AB9DE24BE9AF1B9F!303.entry
Oh, and Happy Thanksgiving to you.
-
Wow, Soybean! I did not know that....thank you. (Wondering if I delete some of that stuff on this desktop if it will work faster. Hmmmm? How would I know what to get rid of?????) Again, I only do very minor & basic things my PC.
$399 is a great price and is about what I have to spend but I am figuring if I use the $120 I have at Amazon.com, I can get a $499 laptop for around $399 out of pocket.
-
There are several ways to identify extraneous proprietary software that you don't need and can remove. Look at the desktop for shortcut icons with label names that include the computer brand name. For example, I still have an icon on my notebook's desktop labeled "HP Total Care Advisor"; it's one thing I did not uninstall, but may still do at some point. And, look for such items on the Programs menu. Also, open Control Panel for Windows Vista and then open Programs and Features (replaced Add or Remove Programs in Windows XP) and look down the list for programs that can be removed; this panel is where you normally execute removal of a program.
Be sure to read the reference I posted in my previous reply. It mentions a cleanup tool called PCDecrapifier. I haven't actually used that, but I'm under the impression it's a good tool to use; the author of that blog is a moderator in a major computing forum and knows what he's talking about. PCDecrapifier helps you identify these extraneous proprietary programs. And, download and regularly use CCleaner, which is also mentioned in the referenced article; CCleaner is a good program to use for regular PC maintenance; it helps keep a computer running at it's best.
-
I dont have many icons but that is probably because I deleted them. I am not saying the programs are deleted though.
I have XP and my ex-husband was the pro here. Since he has been gone, I am totally lost. I never put the things in here so I don't know what to remove. The names are sometimes weird (In add/delete programs) so I am scared to delete them.
Maybe I will try to google them. THANKS!!
-
Google is very good way to learn more about programs you see in your Add or Remove Programs list. :)
If you see a particular program about which you're searched for info but are still unsure, post back or start a new topic if you're talking about your current Win XP computer.
-
I will post back here....but not today. I will give everyone a break. LOL!
Thanks sooooooooooo much!!

MomNEEDSHelp,While Soybean has given excellent commentary to you re your proposed purchase and your previous experience with the O/S Vista. The prevailing opinion (which i have even seen stated by Microsoft) is that 2gb is the recommended RAM. Yes many computers were sold and are indeed used that only had the 1gb. Vista is a notoriously slow and a challenging O/S to use as i'm sure you have seen exemplified in the Apple/Microsoft T.V. adds. I would suggest that you ask the last poster to your post (Patio) if he has completed his evaluation of the Vista O/S and what would be his recommendation on it or perhaps the RAM concern or even if a new purchase is in the offing if perhaps a version of XP would be better. truenorth, where is she going to find a new computer these days with Windows XP? Vista is now on all new machines.
I sense you're casting some doubt on my comments about running Vista with 1GB. She said: Laptop will only be used for Email, Ebay and general Google searches. (No movies, music or games)
Now, go back and read my first reply. I was not trying to encourage her to buy a computer with 1GB, I was merely say it's feasible and works reasonably well, in light of her stated usage, and assuming she does some fine tuning by removing unneeded programs, etc. That's based on actual experience; I don't need to see someone else's evaluation to confirm that. But, I also mentioned that machines with 2GB are quite available now at the low end of the price spectrum. For that reason, I'd rather see her buy one with 2GB.
I will confess I do not have anti-virus running on my notebook, so that's a bit of an advantage in terms of performance.
-
They used to sell Vista computers with 1GB of RAM a lot, but I don't know, if because of public outcry, or something else, but when you go through stores right now, it's hard to see Vista computers with less, than 2GB.

Do yo mean HOUSECALL Free Scan? I do not see the word SCAN elsewhere. I do see download but then I have to RUN or Save.

Probably that, plus the low cost of memory. I could upgrade my notebook to 2GB for about $35, and I may do so. The cost difference for manufacturers to put 2GB in a new computer instead of 1B, I would guess, might be a low as $10 or less, surely not much more than that, $15 - $20 at most.
-
Since they buy in bulk, I bet that RAM doesn't cost them more, than couple of bucks.
-
Yep, you can be sure they get it for way less than we have to pay at retail price.
-
If you still unhappy....recently, I stumbled upon some web page listing historic RAM prices....8 years ago only (2000), 1GB of RAM, ran for little bit under $1,000

Oh, believe me, I think it's a great time to be computing. Being able to buy 2GB or RAM for $35 is amazing, compared to memory prices of years past. Back in 1995, I bought a 4MB memory stick to upgrade a 486 computer from 4MB to 8MB. That cost me about $200!

Here you go...
It looks like most electronics become extremely cheap.

I am not sure. I attached what I found that said Hijack.

You are not kidding, are you!?! :'( :'( :'(
I read those steps and there is no way in the world that I can pull that off alone. To start, I could not even get passes the first requirement. (Do I have SP1a....I have no idea if I do or If I don't)
How screwed am I? Will my entire PC just die? Is it a recent virus?
*censored*!!!
Thanks, Denise
-
I'm not kidding, but it's Thanksgiving family visit time, right now, so I'll reply with more detail, when I'll be back.
-
No problem. Please.....go enjoy your family!!

Ok, True...
I would love one of them but I have that $120 Amazon.com credit.
From the TOP 3 on the list, is it wiser (on my pocket) to purchase the first laptop and spend the additional $30 bucks if/when I need another 1GB RAM??
http://www.amazon.com/s/qid=1227805937/ref=sr_nr_p_display_size-bin_3?ie=UTF8&rs=565108&keywords=acer&bbn=565108&rnid=107463011&rh=n%3A541966%2Cn%3A565108%2Ck%3Aacer%2Cp%5Fdisplay%5Fsize-bin%3A00200%7B14%20to%2015%20in.%7B
I wish there was an XP with at least a 15" screen that was in the same price range on Amazon. :(

You have to take care of that infection.
Please, go back to my link, print it out, read it carefully, and you'll see, it's not that complicated.
If you have any questions, feel free to ask questions.

I can see from your HJT log, that you have SP3 (the newest one) installed.
-
Do I answer YES to this???
Step A is for people who say YES to either of the following:
1) You do not have an antivirus installed.
2) You have an antivirus program or Security Suite that is expired.
If YES, which do you prefer I download??
If the answer to either of the above is yes:
Download one of the free antivirus programs listed below.
Avast! Home Edition
AVG Free Edition
AntiVir Personal
_______________________________________
Important: Uninstall any old/outdated antivirus program(s), including Security Suites before upgrading or replacing with a new one.
Install the new antivirus and make sure it is updated.
Do a full system scan and remove or quarantine everything found.
Continue on to Step One.
I think this may be too hard for me. I am not sure if I have any old, new or outdates antivirus programs. ??? I do not know how to do a full system scan or remove anything...nevermind quarantine anything.
_______________________________________ _
Step 1: Add or Remove Programs
1. Click on the Windows Start button and click on the Control Panel
2. In the Control Panel window, double-click Add or Remove Programs icon.
3. When the Add or Remove Programs window has fully populated, check for any unknown or suspicious looking programs.
I have no clue what program may be suspicious.
_______________________________________ ___
For a list of Malware applications that can be found in Add or Remove Programs follow this link. Uninstall Malware via Add or Remove Programs
Is this list of things I should look for so I can delete them? (They don't look familiar)
I am gonna stop here so I am not totally lost.
-
1. No. You have McAfee installed.
2. N/A
Other two...skip them.
Proceed to step 2 - house cleaning - CCleaner, and the rest should be easy, just downloading, installing, and running some scans.
-
Someone on here made me download CCleaner last week. I think I did so but I see no Icon for it on my desktop. (It was not CCleaner Slim though) Anyway, should I look for it so Iknow if I have it or is downloading it again fine?
If you want me to look for it....where do I look? LOL!!
You have the patience of a saint. THANK YOU FOR BEING PATIENT WITH ME!!
-
No problem. I'm doing fine :)
Go Start>All programs, and see, if it's there.
Slim version just come without some Yahoo, or Google toolbar...relevant here.
-
Step 2: House Cleaning
Download CCleaner Slim and save it to your Desktop - Alternate download link
When the file has been saved, go to your Desktop and double-click on ccsetupxxx_slim.exe
Follow the prompts to install the program.
* Double-click the CCleaner shortcut on the desktop to start the program.
* Click on the Options block on the left, then choose Cookies.
* Under Cookies to Delete, highlight any cookies you would like to retain permanently
* Click the right arrow > to move them to the Cookies to Keep window.
Which COOKIES do I want to retain permanantely? What do they do? (This will help me know if I want to keep them)
-
Leave cookies alone. They don't bother anything, and they keep all your login names, and passwords.
I don't even know, why it's even recommended.
Next programs you'll run, will remove so called "tracking cookies".
-
Go into Options > Advanced uncheck Only delete files in Windows Temp folders older than 48 hours
Am I going to do this or just run the cleaner?
-
Yeah, uncheck that option, and run CCleaner.
-
I am about to run the cleaner. I see (under the windows tab) many checked items. Almost every box is checked On the heading INTERNET EXPLORER, INTERNET EXPLORER and SYSTEM.
I would normally think nothing of it but when I went to run the cleaner, I get a message asking if I was sure I wanted to proceed because the process will permanantly delete files from my system. (I got nervous)
Shall I run it anyway?
PS: How can I find you tomorrow? I am getting tired. (11:57PM in NY)
-
My settings are shown below, but I don't use IE. I use Firefox.
If you use mainly IE, I'd uncheck cookies to keep your user names, and passwords. All others you may keep as in my screenshot below.
As for tomorrow, I'm subscribed to this thread, so whenever you'll post, I'll get notification. I'll reply, as soon, as I'm around here.

THANKS SO MUCH!! I will re-start my crazy mess tomorrow.
Hope you are ok after my turture. LOL!!
SO MANY THANKS!!!
Denise
-
I'm fine, thank you :)
My stomach is full, so that's what counts....hehehe
Sleep well :)
-
I left you a while ago. You had me download Hijack This and CCLEANER. I sent you the files. You had said subscribed to this post awhen I came back, you would find this. Well, I am back (lol) and need your help. Yoy had said I had some infected stuff and you would hlp me remove the bad stuff.
If you have some free time, I would very much appreciate your help.
Thanks,
Denise
-
Uh, ah....you need to remind me where we're at now.
What the heck happened to you? MiA for a month?.....LOL
-
LOL! Sorry. (Just sent you another message. Disregard it)
Was so busy with Ebay sales for the holidays. Was scared to mess with PC because if I screwed up, I would up shits creek w/o a paddle. I would have had ZERO sales and that means no food/rent $.
-
So, where do we stand now?
-
Good question! I dont know what happened but had some kind of security pop-up come up about allowing something to happen and I said NO. Now all these pop ups are happening and wanting to scan my pc and all this mess. (VirusRemover2008 is one of them)
Is there any way to get rid of all the infected stuff? Remember, I am not very technical....so go easy on me. Would you like to see anything somehow so you know what is infeced so I can remove it?
-
In that case...

Whoa, Broni. That is where we were last time. I read the link and was still lost. When I got back to you, you said somthing about walkig me thru.
A -Don't know if I have an Anti-Virus program.
B- Don't know if I have a SP1a. (What the heck is that!!)
c - Same question about SP2....??????
Quick Update to refresh your memory ----> Hubby was the PC pro. He walked out on me and our baby. (JERK...I think he was a closet GAY guy...long story. LOL) Anyway... He was the Pro. He purchased the PC in late 2003 & installed what ever things are inside. Its a Sony Vaio with XP. That is about all I know.
-
OK. OK.
I re-read the whole thread.
A- Yes, you do - McAfee
B- You have SP3, the latest service pack
Last thing you did, you're about to run CCleaner, so I don't know, if you did it, or not.
-
LOL!!
I do not know what the heck I did before by not allowing something in my PC but all these Antivirus2008 and Antivirus2009 keep popping up. (Just an FYI)
Ok, if you say Ihave McAfee, then I do. LOL! Your word is better than my guess. Same with SP3...You say I have it, then great. (One les thing I need to do)
I see CCLEANER icon on my desktop. I asume I have intalled it. ?
-
I assume so.
Read back, because you asked some questions about running CCleaner, and I answered them.
-
I see it as an Icon on my desktop so I can only assume I do.
-
Read back, because you asked some questions about running CCleaner, and I answered them.
-
Don't wet yourself....LOL I read back. Now what the heck am I looking for? ???
-
You had questions about how to run CCleaner.
Did you finally run it?
-
I can't remember. How can I check?
-
Run it one more time.
-
I read thru all my pages here and can't find where the instructions are for downloading CCLEANER.
Where the heck was it? ??? God, I feel like such an idiot.
-
It was mentioned numerous times but the link to a download source was not posted. I suggest getting the Slim version at http://www.ccleaner.com/download/builds . It's the same as the Standard build, minus the Yahoo toolbar and language pack (for foreign languages).
-
Ok, all set. I believe it is downloaded. (Thanks)
Now how do I proceed to get rid of these PC infections? The penicilin is not working. LOL!

You need to...
Start new topic here: http://www.computerhope.com/forum/index.php/board,7.0.html
Post all logs there. Someone will assist you.
-
Broni...are you leaving me? :'( I will post to that link but I can not explain what I need them to do. This HAPPY TURKEY DAY post says it all.
Denise
-
You don't need to explain anything. All they need from you, are those logs.
I don't have authority to work on those logs.
-
Ok. I guess when they come back and tell me whatever they are gonna tell me, I will move on to step 4, right?
I am sorry. I am talking but I really do not even know what I am saying. LOL!!
Dee
-
It never hurts to ask :)
They'll guide you there, like I did, so far.
You're in good hands.
-
Ok, if you say so! :-*
I feel like I was dropped off in a foreign land and they speak no English. :o
Thanks so much Broni!! I really appreciate your help!!
Denise
-
You're very welcome :)
I'll be here, if you need some extra help.
-
:-* :-* :-* :-* :-* :-* :-* :-*
Dee

Awwwwwwwwww ;D
-
So you see who you helped. ;)

What about a phone number??
....just kidding ;D
-
Thanks for the compliment, Broni. ;) :-*
You have been so helpful. I just thought you deserve to see who you helped....and you have. (I think.....LOL)
-
It was a very nice gesture ;D
-
BRONI.....You there?
I sent all that stuff you told me to send to the 'Virus' people. Now they want other logs. I don't know how to send the logs to them. Can you help?
-
MomNEEDShelp,As a suggestion:it should be apparent that many of the "Gurus" of the CH forums are in evidence on most of the forums. However in the case of the "Virus" forum there are those on there that have had to meet specific experience and knowledge levels before they are permitted to give advise. However other than that they can and will assist you on the aspects of the problems they are trying to assist you with.Including how to do the attaining and providing of information that they need to assist you. Therefore if there is something that "they" need and you don't know how to do it just ask them for guidance. You will be given it.This is preferable to jumping back and forth between different posts in different forums. It can become confusing for those trying to help you. Stay with it and you will be helped by them.goodluck, truenorth

Agrees with truenorth.
Also agrees that Broni has the patience of a saint. :) To me, that's what separates the men from the boys in the computer industry. If you can help someone without technical knowledge through tasks that require it without giving the user a heart attack, that's far more important than "OMG, I CAN HAXORZ DA PENTAGONZ WITH MAH LINUKZ"
Broni also knows his limits. You don't want your heart surgeon giving you a root canal, do you? How about your dentist filling in for your gynecologist?
-
I have to say, you guys do have a great sense of humor. I would like to see what my dentist can do as far as gynecology. LOL!!! I could add more but I don't want to get booted. ;D
Anyway... I asked the 'Virus' people HOW to send them the logs and the reply I got was to go READ a link that was provided. The link was to a post on steps on Downloading CCLEANER, CYBERDEFENDER, HIJACK THIS...etc. I already did all that and stopped at number 4 to make sure I was doing everything right up to that point. BRONI has been super helpful!!! He told me how to post a certain log to them and I did. They now need more logs but I do not know how to retrieve them.
YOU GUYS ARE ALL AWESOME but I think you fail to realize that some of us really have NO CLUE about PC's except how to surf the net. I fit into that catagory. I am just a single mom with PC issues. I need easy and basic instructions/guidance. I am really sorry to be a pest. :'(
Denise
-
MomNEEDShelp,To this point i doubt that anyone conciders you to be a pest. Most likely all of us at one time or another have been at your "basic' level. It is only through dogged effort and perseverance that we continue to rise in both knowledge and experience.Failure is but a step on the road to success (as long as you don't give up).So go back to the Virus forum and tell whoever is currently trying to assist you of your limitations (don't be shy) and ask them the "specific" question that will when answered allow you to move forward. It may occur that through this process not only will you resolve your current dilemma but it may encourage you to delve deeper into what makes a computer work and ultimately you may feel confident enough to want to reach out and help others.truenorth

I didn't even use a computer until about 6-7 years ago
-
TrueNorth, you are a doll. I won't quit on you guys if you don't quit on me. ;)
BC....I think some of us have the tech 'touch' and some don't. (Oh, how I wish I did!!) I had my first new beefy Sony Windows PC in late 1995. How sad is that?!! I can only surf the net & email in all that time. (I recently learned how to do a system restore. I am proud of that and hope one day to help someone out with my new info ;D) THANKS GUYS!! You are aces!
-
Mom you've been as patient as Broni thru this as well...stick to it .
-
Awwe, Patio. You are too nice! Thanks!! :-*
Denise
-
Dear MomNEEDShelp :)
I can see, that you did well with your first post in malware forum, and you attached Superantispyware log without a problem:
What does seem to be a problem with attaching more logs?
-
BTW...as a newbie, you've been doing great :)

Hi soybean,
if you do not have an anti virus programme of some sort running on your computer, you may as I did, live to regret it!!!!! I made the errror of letting mine run out as I live 180 kl to the nearest electronics shop and didn't know about the freeware anti virus programmes available. to cut a long story short, to use the Australian venacular, I lost the lot from my computer and it cost me nearly $400.00 Au to have it repaired, cleaned up, the programmes re-istalled and the modem, which the virus burnt out, replaced. Please do yourself a favour and install an anti virus programme.
regards and happy New Year to all.

why was that directed at Soybean?
Personally I underwent the exact opposite as you. I ended up needing to format/install again after using a Anti-virus.
Been AV free now for (looks at watch) almost 5 years. Only infrequent fix-ups required by me to remove malware.
Mom you've been as patient as Broni thru this as well...stick to it .
AH HA! so she is Patio's Mom! interesting. Very interesting.
