Where's the structure that XP used in Vista when it comes to my documents and settings program data and the like?
That leads me to my next question; how do I delete extensions from Firefox when they refuse to be uninstalled?

I don't get you, sorry.
If you mean "where does Vista keep the folders that XP calls documents and settings, etc" then it's under a "Users" folder, documents & settings etc are just shortcuts for legacy apps.
Confused me for about an hour, trying to back up a customer's machine ...

Once I changed options around on my vista laptop to my preference, got all programs installed, I a was happy as a clam.

Ok, next question: For some reason, I can't install extensions in Firefox 3 on Vista Basic.
It shows me this error;
Firefox could not install the file at:
https://addons.mozilla.org/downloads/file/43237/noscript-1.8.7.6-fx+sm+fn.xpi
because: Unexpected installation error
Review the Error Console log for more details.

Ok, resolved that by deleting extensions.cache, extensions.ini and extensions.rdf in my profile.

How do I get Vista to stop whining about me needing permissions to delete a folder?
How do I get Vista to stop asking me if a program is allowed to continue?
Without disabling the UAC.

Nope - I would but the internet isn't working on my Vista laptop at the moment, and I just have UAC disabled anyway.

I'll keep it mind. Going to keep searching, though. I might just disable the UAC but I am not sure what downsides there are to that yet.

Well, do you have much software installed and running?
It is obviously a handy util but it annoys the heck outta me.

Just disabled UAC for a little while. I find Windows to slow down a bit if you do.
Blogger Chris123NT is reporting that the LUAFV driver, which controls UAC in Vista, can cause latency issues if the controversial feature is disabled. Apparently, once UAC is disabled, a registry tweak that disables the driver in question also needs to be applied if the user wants to have solid boot times back

I'll just turn it back on. I was hoping this would also disable the "You need permission to perform this action" error messages I keep getting when trying to remove folders but it seems to be another part of Windows.
My next question;
How do I gain full control over all the folders? Assiging my account more rights and permissions over the folder that is stubborn doesn't seem to do the trick.

That may or may not have helped. Initially, I did as they recommended (Through the Command Prompt) and it had no success. Then I figured I'd restart and try in safe mode and I was able to remove the folder.
OK: next question;
How do I safely remove the Internet Explorer icon? In XP you can do this from Add/remove software -> Windows components. You could also get it back that way. Where is this option in Vista?

You can simply delete them. They're merely just shortcuts.

The desktop icon isn't, it has specific options when I right click. I'd like to get it back if I need to.

Once again, you can safely delete it, and access IE at any time by going Start>All Programs.

I don't just mean making a shortcut.
The thing on a desktop is nothing but a shortcut. You can create a new one by going Start>All Programs, and right clicking on IE>Send to>Desktop (create shortcut).

I just tried that and no, it's not just a shortcut, it is a shortcut like Network, My Computer, Recycle Bin. It has special properties when I right click.
If I create a new shortcut of IE, it does not have these properties.

Can you post a screenshot of those properties?
I just deleted IE icon from my desktop, and recreated it without any problem.

Rather than the usual list it says "Open homepage" and "Run with no add-ons"
It also lacks the little arrow in the corner.
My guess is that Microsoft made sure that you can't take it away like in XP.

This is a bit strange, because as you can see from my previous screenshot, my IE icon has different options.
Check this...
Right click on Start button, click Properties, then Start menu tab, Customize button.
At the bottom, there is drop-down menu - Show on Start menu - Internet link.
Do you have it set to IE? If so, change it to a browser, you use.

Yes, those others are different, but IE shouldn't be. This is why...
If you right click on desktop, then Personalize, and "Change desktop icons", you'll see what shortcuts/icons are special:

Network, My Computer, and Recycle Bin are there, but IE is not.
What Vista version is it?

Vista Basic.
And I already looked there but it indeed does not have the icon. Like I said, I think the crypto-fascists at Microsoft do not WANT you to remove IE. After all, when XP came out they were pretty sure no one wanted to remove the icon but gave the choice anyway, XP was all about user friendliness (And anti-piracy, hehe). They'd think "Now who'd want something other than IE? There's nothing out there" but with Vista.. There are at least 5 browsers every one knows about and that you can pick from.
it IS an icon like those in that menu you showed, but it can't be disabled from that menu. Which means your only alternative is to delete it.
