Title: need Help! A disk read error occurred press ctrl+alt+del to restart
Post by: nefariousxxx on December 25, 2008, 03:55:07 PM
HI!

This is going to be difficult, i'm sure of it.

I have an Acer aspire 5050 laptop that is vista capable, but came with XP on it.. Well it was my friends laptop for school, but became extremely corrupted with virus to where as soon as it booted up you got a blue screen with all kinds of fatal error and restart to open safe mode and all this, you automatically had to restart it. I finally got it to open in safe mode, install an anivir antivirus, and ran the virus thing but it only came back with 1 Warning, and none of the virus i knew were on there, i can't update it cuz it won't give me an internet connection. LONG STORY SHORT, i tried everything to format it, to bypass things whatever. the next step was trying to upgrade it to vista, because i knrew it gave the option to format it and whatnot.

I have a windows vista home premium update from XP, etc disk. So i put it in, started it up and it said that i'd have to run it from windows, well i couldn't get to windows to run it, so i safe moded it put in the disk and attempted to run it. It gave 2 options whether i wanted to keep the files but just upgrade to vista, and one where i could just install vista and blah, but it kept an windows.old file on the harddrive? it said you wouldn't be able to access your old OS, but i didn't care.. i just want everything whiped clean and vista on it. once again, i tried that.. and it said to restart. So i restarted, now everytime i restart it shows the acer screen, then immediately says " A DISK READ ERROR OCCURED Press ctrl+alt+del to restart.

and thats alllll i can do.

when the acer screen comes on, you can pres f2 for the setup, i did that.. but i can't change the boot order or anything. you can also press f12 and enable that multiboot logging stuff, and it gives the option to boot from cdrom, from ide-something and network.. but anyone i try, it still pops up with the disk read error thing.

soooo..

WHAT CAN I POSSIBLY DO!?

how can i wipe this clean? how can i get past that at all...

?

TY! please help :(

OK! so i don't know exactly what happened, other then just restarting it a billion times and trying the same things over and over again. i did the f12 multi boot menu again, and with the windows vista upgrade in the cdrom slot ( again) i decided to click the cdrom boot, well.. it worked.. ( to some extent) it booted up the disk and gave me the option of installing windows. i made an attempt at installing windows, put in the product registration code, and then it tells me i need to run the upgrade from windows. well... i just can't do that. so i clicked and canceled and ok'd and clicked and whatever, somehow getting to a repair diagnostics and all this other junk, so i repair windows, and it said it may or may not have been successful, time to restart, SOOOO i restarted, and it actually seemed to be successful!!!! and now, i'm on the installing windows screen, its already copied the windows files, and now its at 36% of expanding files.

lets hope it all works! and if it doesn't... well... you better believe i will be back, and grouchier than ever. REGARDLESS.. atleast i had a forum to vent my frustration, and i guess i just have the luck of the computer gods on my side.

i don't get it.

i know computers can't  " think" for themselves,
but they sure act like they do.

next time it can Mega Byte me, and windows is going out the window.

:D

whell a virus could be keeping you from gowing into task manager so you could stop it but it could be just another one of those candy coated vista problems, i sugest running a scan with a diffrent virus removal tool like malware bytes or dr. web.

also i want to conclude that vrus scanners dont detect evey virus so you shouls alwways use like 3 tools and an antivirus when in an infeton.

Check the hard drive anyway to be sure it's not having issues.
