Hi,
My desktop PC will not get to the user log on screen when I start up. At start up, it will go through the POST and then go through the Windows XP loading screen. Just when it seems it has finished going through with the Windows XP loading screen and entering the User Log On screen it goes into stand by mode. At this point no signal goes to the monitor and a message "No signal being received...." comes on to the monitor and the monitor light will turn from green to red and will be blinking.
The last time it happened I was able to solve this by going to the Safe mode and doing a SYstem Restore from a previous bookmarked date. But this time around I have gone a month back on the System restore but the problem exists.
I have my booting sequence and all other parameters on the CMOS, and everything seems to work out fine. What should I do. I do not want to loose data nor upgrades on my primary master disk.
-
So the computer works fine in Safe Mode?
Try this step in my guide:
http://www.computerhope.com/forum/index.php/topic,62253.msg395335.html#msg395335
-
Hi Carbon Dudeoxide,
Yes please, the PC works fine at Safe Mode.
-
Follow that msconfig tip please.
-
Thanks. I will do it and let you know the outcome.
But let me clarify the steps required, if you would not mind.
1. I should go to the safe mode.
2. Follow your instructions per the msconfig.
3. uncheck most of the start up programs.
My question is which of the programs should I leave unchecked apart from the antivirus? I will appreciate if you can give me a list of some normal programs that should not be touched like the antivirus.
-
A list eh? That would be pretty hard.
If you give me a list of all the Startup Item names in msconfig, I can tell you which ones you should disable (at least for now until we get the problem sorted)
-
Hi Carbon Dudeoxide,
I went through the msconfig sequence per your instructions and unchecked over 50% of the start up programs that I thought may not be needed at start up but the problem is still there. What should be the next step.

Download HijackThis:
http://www.trendsecure.com/portal/en-US/tools/security_tools/hijackthis/download (http://www.trendsecure.com/portal/en-US/tools/security_tools/hijackthis/download)
Click on Download HijackThis Installer
Install, and run HijackThis.
Post HijackThis log.
-
Thanks. I will try this and get back to you.

Hi,
I was able to install the program from the site you gave but unfortunately I could not install because the Task bar covered where I have to check the "conditions acceptance" check box. In the safe mode the fonts and icons are so large that this check box could not show up for checking no matter the up-dragging I did.
I tried changing the pixel size of my monitor but the changes was not accepted by the cpu: I guess because I was in the safe mode! What should I do to be able to install and try the recommended program?
Thanks in advance for your support.

Alt+spacebar, M, and then use the arrow keys to move the window.

The logfile from the scanning is attached for your review.
The scan came out with a lot of files prefixed with R, F, O etc. What is the next step, pls?

Before you begin the SDFix instructions you should copy these instructions in a Notepad file and save them to your desktop or print them for easy reference. Much of SDFix will be done in Safe mode and you will be unable to access this web page after booting into Safe mode.
Download SDFix by AndyManchesta (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/andymanchesta/SDFix.exe) and save it to your desktop.
When using this tool, you must use the Administrator's account or an account with Administrative rights
* Now, double-click on the SDFix icon that should now be residing on your desktop. If a Open File - Security Warning box opens, click on the Run button.
* A window will now open showing SDFix being extracted into the C:\SDFix folder.
* Once the installation program has finished extracting SDFix, it will open a Notepad with further instructions.
* DO NOT use it just yet.
Reboot your computer in Safe Mode (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial61.html) using the F8 method. To do this, restart your computer and after hearing your computer beep once during startup (but before the Windows icon appears) press the F8 key repeatedly. A menu will appear with several options. Use the arrow keys to navigate and select the option to run Windows in "Safe Mode".
When your computer has started in safe mode, and you see the desktop, close all open Windows.
* Click on the Start button, click on the Run menu option, and type the following text from the Code Box into the Open: field then click the OK button.
C:\SDFix\RunThis.bat
* SDFix window will open containing some brief info and a disclaimer on the use of the tool.
* Type Y on your keyboard and then press Enter to begin the cleanup process.
* It will remove any Trojan Services or Registry Entries found then prompt you to press any key to Reboot.
* Press any Key and it will restart the PC.
* When the PC restarts, the Fixtool will run again and complete the removal process then display Finished, press any key to end the script and load your desktop icons.
* Once the desktop icons load the SDFix report will open on screen and also save into the SDFix folder as Report.txt.
* Copy and paste the contents of the results file Report.txt in your next reply along with a new HijackThis log (from normal boot mode).
-
The requested txt documents are attached for your review.

Can you still not get to Normal Mode?
How about Safe Mode With Networking?
-
I am still not getting the normal mode. I have not tried safe mode with networking yet. I will get back to you on that later.
-
Hi,
I am neither getting the normal mode nor get internet connection when safe mode with networking is selected.
I am however able to get into safe mode and work. The drivers for the printer and others are not loaded under the safe mode.

Try Dial-a-fix.
Download Dial-a-Fix (http://wiki.djlizard.net/Dial-a-fix#Mirrors.2Fdownload_locations.2C_and_articles) by djlizard, save it to the desktop then extract it to it's own folder.
- Open the folder and run Dial-a-fix.exe
- 2 windows will open. Close the one in the background labeled Restrictive Policies
- Check the box in section 1, Empty temp folders.
- Check the box in section 2, Fix Windows Installer.
- Check the box in section 3, Fix Windows Update.
- Check the box in section 4, labeled SSL/HTTPS/Cryptography. The 4 boxes under it should be pre-checked
- Check all boxes in section 5, labeled Registration Center.
- Click Go
- OK any error messages if received, but write them down and post them here.
- Restart the computer when done.
.
Can you log on to Normal mode now??
-
Holala........Eureka...I was able to get to the normal mode after running the Dial-a-fix. I did not get an error message though.
I am so happy. What went wrong and how do I prevent its recurrence in the future.
Thanks for all the support.
Regards,
Collins

I'm not sure what went wrong.
Now let's make sure everything is gone, or not...
Run the Kaspersky Online Scanner (http://www.kaspersky.com/virusscanner)
In Microsoft Windows Vista, you must open the Web browser using the Run as Administrator command. From the Desktop right click the icon to open the browser and choose Run as Administrator.
- Click on SCAN NOW
- Click Accept.
- The program will then begin downloading the latest definition files.
- Once the files have been downloaded locate the Scan Settings and have it scan My Computer.
- The scan will take a while, so be patient and let it finish.
When the scan is done, in the Scan is complete window, any infection is displayed.
There is no option to clean/disinfect, however, we need to analyze the information on the report.
To obtain the report:
Click on: Save Report As- Next, in the Save as prompt, Save in area, select: Desktop.
- In the File name area use KScan, or something similar.
- In Save as type: click the drop arrow and select: Text file [*.txt]
- Then, click: Save
(http://i154.photobucket.com/albums/s258/evilfantasy69/Kas-Savetxt.gif)
Copy and paste the Kaspersky Online Scanner Report in your next reply.
Note for Internet Explorer 7 users: If at any time you have trouble viewing the accept button of the license, click on the Zoom tool located at the bottom right of the IE window and set the zoom to 75%. Once the license is accepted, reset to 100%.
-
I am unable to do the scanning using the Kapersky. The "next" tab is not highlighted. Is it because I am using Windows XP?
-
The message should have been "I am unable to scan because the "accept" tab on the kapersky on line scanner is not highlighted so I couldn/t Scan my computer. Is it because I am using windows XP?"
-
Are you using Internet Explorer?
-
No I am using Mozilla Firefox.
I have internet explorer, though on my PC.
What do you advise?
-
Try using Internet Explorer.
-
Tried on Internet Explorer. The result is the same.
The accept tab is non active.
-
Try another scanner please.
Scan with Panda ActiveScan (http://www.pandasoftware.com/products/activescan.htm)
This scanner requires Internet Explorer
- Once you are on the Panda site click the Scan your PC now button
- A new window will open...click the Check Now button
- Enter your Country
- Enter your State/Province
- Enter your e-mail address and click send
- Select either Home User or Company
- Select the appropriate Yes or No to receiving marketing information
- Click the Free Online Scan button
- If it wants to install an ActiveX component allow it
- It will start downloading the files it requires for the scan (Note: It may take a couple of minutes)
- When download is complete, click on My Computer to start the scan
- When the scan completes, if anything malicious is detected, click the See Report button, then Save Report and save it to a convenient location.
Post the contents of the ActiveScan report in your next reply.
-

Download Vundofix (http://www.atribune.org/ccount/click.php?id=4) to your desktop.
Important! If using Windows Vista be sure to Run As Administrator (http://windowshelp.microsoft.com/Windows/en-US/Help/fb464905-31d5-4427-89a2-ed5322327fc21033.mspx)- Double-click VundoFix.exe to run it.
- Put a check next to Run VundoFix as a task.
- You will receive a message saying vundofix will close and re-open in a minute or less. Click OK
- When VundoFix re-opens, click the Scan for Vundo button.
- Once it's done scanning, click the Remove Vundo button.
- You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files, click YES
- Once you click yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing Vundo.
- When completed, it will prompt that it will shutdown your computer, click OK.
- Turn your computer back on.
- Please post the contents of C:\vundofix.txt in your next reply.
.
Note: It is possible that VundoFix encountered a file it could not remove. In this case, VundoFix will run on reboot, simply follow the above instructions starting from "Click the Scan for Vundo button" when VundoFix appears at reboot.
If you receive this error: "Run-time error '339': Component 'comdlg32.ocx' or one its dependencies not correctly registered: a file is missing or invalid", a new copy and instructions on where to put it can be found here (http://windowsxp.mvps.org/comdlg32.htm)
Please let VundoFix finish, sometimes it can take multiple passes
-
After the Vundofix scan was completed I got the message "Done Searching for files. No infected files were found".
-
This scanner works with Internet Explorer only!
Scan with the BitDefender Online Scanner (http://www.bitdefender.com/scan8/ie.html)
Click I Agree to the license and then install the ActiveX control.
Please DO NOT change the Scanning Options.
That will make your logs huge and we don't need to see clean files.
Select Start Scan to begin.
This scan can take a while so please be patient and let it complete.
Once BitDefender completes the scan:
Click-on the Detected Problems tab.
Then select Click here to export the scan report
(http://i154.photobucket.com/albums/s258/evilfantasy69/Tutorials/bit.jpg)
This will save a file named bdscan.html I would suggest saving it to the Desktop so you can easily find it. (take notice of where you save it so you can find it later)
You will have to upload the file online. The forums will not accept HTML.
Go to File Dropper (http://www.filedropper.com/)
Click Upload
Locate the file and double click it.
Copy the download link and post it back here.
