Title: HELP! Virus/spyware is preventing internet access!
Post by: iHabNoTeef on January 13, 2009, 04:18:57 PM
Hi, I am running Windows XP and I believe my computer is infected with spyware that prevents internet access. Last week, I had spyware that I removed using SUPERAntiSpyware that would constantly crash and restart explorer.exe and prevent access to antivirus websites. I realized yesterday that my computer was infected with spyware because I would get a fake wallpaper warning me about spyware and an icon in the taskbar saying my computer was infected--this was the actual spyware. The taskbar icon told me to go to real-av.org and download the antivirus scanner, but I did not. I was sent to the site automatically though. I scanned my computer again with SUPERAntiSpyware and it removed the spyware and I do not get that message anymore. But now, as soon as I started up my computer, I did not have internet access. I could type a URL into Internet Explorer and FireFox but it would not go to the site. Both browsers would just stop after I entered in the URL, there were no messages saying I could not connect to the website--just the same blank screen as when I opened the browser up. Also, I do know that the spyware is not completely gone because it is still trying to send me to a website, but it is a different one than before. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Also, I have checked my hosts file.

EDIT: I keep getting sent to www!.lsp-test-nax.ind.in/land/eurl?code=15, I believe that is the only site not blocked on my computer.

Click Start > Control Panel > System > Hardware > Device Manager > View > Show Hidden Devices.
.
----------

Now try to run the scans found here http://www.computerhope.com/forum/index.php/topic,46313.0.html

Post the 3 logs when complete.

Everything in the MBAM log says No action taken. Please run it again and let it fix what it finds. Post the new log.

---

After that is complete.

Download random's system information tool (RSIT) (http://images.malwareremoval.com/random/RSIT.exe) by random/random from and save it to your Desktop.

Did u try <<LINK REMOVED>>
It was made for removal of the "smithfraud" malware, but it can fix a lot of corruptions or your system (and the internet access problem)...

Please see here http://www.computerhope.com/forum/index.php/topic,57605.0.html

I've attached two mbam logs, one is after deleting the items in the previous logs. Also, there is another one that I got more recently.

A malicious .DLL file is disrupting the LSP chain on your computer. We need to get rid of it.

.
Reboot the computer.

----------

Open HijackThis and select Do a system scan only.

Place a check mark next to the following entries: (if there)

- R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/customize/ie/defaults/sp/yme/*http://www.yahoo.com
- R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/customize/ie/defaults/sb/yme/*http://www.yahoo.com/ext/search
- R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant =
- R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,CustomizeSearch =
- R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchURL,(Default) = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/customize/ie/defaults/su/yme/*http://www.yahoo.com

- O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [SUPERAntiSpyware] C:\DOCUME~1\Albert\LOCALS~1\Temp\SSUPDATE.EXE Software\SUPERAntiSpyware.com\SUPERAntiSpyware

Important: Close all open windows except for HijackThis and then click Fix checked.

Once completed, exit HijackThis and restart the computer.

Do you have internet connection now?

Everything works now, thanks a lot!  ;D

Are there any programs that you recommend buying or downloading to prevent this from happening in the future?

Yes we need to make sure everything is gone now.

Download ComboFix© by sUBs from one of the below links. Be sure top save it to the Desktop.

Link #1 (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe)
Link #2 (http://subs.geekstogo.com/ComboFix.exe)

**Note:  It is important that it is saved directly to your Desktop

Close any open Web browsers. (Firefox, Internet Explorer, etc) before starting ComboFix.

Temporarily disable your antivirus, and any antispyware real time protection before performing a scan. Click this link (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic114351.html) to see a list of security programs that should be disabled and how to disable them.

Double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts.

For Windows XP Systems install the Recovery Console:

- If you are using Windows XP and do not already have the Recovery Console installed, please ensure your Internet connection is active (if possible) and click Yes.
- If for some reason your Internet is not working click No.
- If you are not using Windows XP, you will not be prompted.
- When prompted to accept the EULA click OK.
- Accept Microsoft's EULA (Click Yes).
- When you are told that the RC is installed correctly click YES to continue scanning for malware.

When finished ComboFix will produce a log for you.
Post the ComboFix log in your next reply.

Important: Do not mouseclick ComboFix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

Remember to re-enable your antivirus and antispyware protection when ComboFix is complete.

ATF Cleaner (http://www.atribune.org/ccount/click.php?id=1) by Atribune to your Desktop.

Alternate download link (http://majorgeeks.com/ATF_Cleaner_d4949.html)

Note: Vista users must use Run As Administrator (http://vistasupport.mvps.org/run_as_administrator.htm)
Note that your system will run slower for a reboot or two after having used this tool so don't panic.

----------

Download OTCleanIt.exe (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/oldtimer/OTCleanIt.exe) and save it to your Desktop.
.
Important: Restart the computer before continuing.

----------

Run the  Kaspersky Online Scanner (http://www.kaspersky.com/virusscanner)

In Microsoft Windows Vista, you must open the Web browser using the Run as Administrator command. From the Desktop right click the icon to open the browser and choose Run as Administrator.

When the scan is done, in the Scan is complete window, any infection is displayed.
There is no option to clean/disinfect, however, we need to analyze the information on the report.

To obtain the report:
Click on: Save Report As(http://i154.photobucket.com/albums/s258/evilfantasy69/Kas-Savetxt.gif)

Copy and paste the Kaspersky Online Scanner Report in your next reply.

Note for Internet Explorer 7 users: If at any time you have trouble viewing the accept button of the license, click on the Zoom tool located at the bottom right of the IE window and set the zoom to 75%. Once the license is accepted, reset to 100%.

Ok, so far everything has been completed except for the Kaspersky scan. It has been 11 hours and the scan is only at 14%. Does it usually take that long?

No it shouldn't take more than a few hours at most. Has it found anything?

Let it go for a while longer then. Hopefully it will speed up after it gets through scanning certain files.

The online scanner never finished even after a few days. I eventually decided to get Kaspersky because I had no anti-virus scanner anyways. After scanning with Kaspersky, that Exploit.Java.Gimsh.a was all it found and it was deleted.
