Title: just wondering
Post by: TiMes on February 01, 2009, 06:15:24 PM
hi, ill get right to the point, my comp is running very very slow for everything it does, IE, Games, just flat out turning on. i just recently moved to the USA and i seem to have left my winXP cd back home... :S what my question is...is there any way to format (set my comp back to factory settings) without that CD?
ive been tryin to read in different areas on the web but i havnt found anything about it.. if i cant do it without the CD, is there a way i can download the CD from the web? certain circumstances prevent me from working at this time so i cant purchase the cd
any help is greatly appreciated

You may have recovery partition.
What is the brand, and model of your computer?
Title: Re: just wondering
Post by: TiMes on February 01, 2009, 06:19:12 PM

Custom built in 99% cases wont' have recovery partition.
You'll need Windows CD to reinstall.

You may..
1. Please, post some computer info:
- processor type, amount of RAM (hold Windows logo key, hit Pause/Break key)
- hard drive size/free space (open "My Computer", right click on hard drive letter, click "Properties")

2. Download HijackThis:
http://www.trendsecure.com/portal/en-US/tools/security_tools/hijackthis/download (http://www.trendsecure.com/portal/en-US/tools/security_tools/hijackthis/download)
by clicking on Download HijackThis Installer
Install, and run it.
Post HijackTHis log.

Post by: Carney on February 01, 2009, 06:58:50 PM
Hi – I am about as far from an expert as it possible to be; however, just from my own experience I have one idea to offer: I see you have Kaspersky AV- Security Suite installed on your system. I had this software on my desktop and after weeks of ongoing nightmarish issues and very slow operation, I hired a tech to come in and diagnose the issue. We discovered that Kaspersky has something of a reputation for slowing systems down. I uninstalled and canceled my subscription and went to a different security package and have not had any more issues. This was the only change made to the system, but it seemed to fix the slowness issue. This is just my idea and certainly should not be considered an expert opinion.

alright heres the HJT Log Fresh ofc
only problem i seem to having is huge lag on browser only on this pc, i tested the net once again on my wifes laptop, and the net speed is 10x faster than mine. i figured if i did all the scans for malware, spyware and virus scan if i cleared it all out it would make it a bit faster but it seems to not have any effect what so ever, any ideas?

You're asked by evilfantasy this:
Quote
Do you use the Ask.com Toolbar? If not then go to Add/Remove Programs and uninstall it.
I didn't see any answer to it.
I also would like to know, which browser you use.

Go here: http://www.speedtest.net/, and post the test's numbers.
What type of connection do you use? What's your ISP advertised speed?
Do you use wired, or wireless connection?

After I got your answers, we'll get rid of some unneeded startups.

Next step.
I want you to wire your computer to the router, and run the tests again.

Just to save you some time in waiting for my next reply...
If after wiring, the speed gets better, let me know, and do NOT follow instructions listed below.
If after wiring, the speed is about the same....

Turn off computer. Disconnect router, and modem from power source for 30 seconds.
Power them back on.
Restart computer.

If that doesn't work, bypass router, and connect computer straight to the modem.

If that doesn't work...
Go Start>Run (Start search in Vista), type in:
cmd
Click OK (in Vista, while holding CTRL, and SHIFT, press Enter).

In Command Prompt window, type in following commands, and hit Enter after each one:
ipconfig /flushdns
ipconfig /registerdns
ipconfig /release
ipconfig /renew

Restart computer.

If that doesn't work...
Go Start>Run (Start search in Vista), type in:
cmd
Click OK (in Vista, while holding CTRL, and SHIFT, press Enter).

At Command Prompt, type in:
netsh int ip reset reset.log
Hit Enter.
Type in:
netsh winsock reset catalog
Hit Enter.

Restart computer.

If that doesn't work...
Download, install, and run WinSockFix: http://www.softpedia.com/get/Tweak/Network-Tweak/WinSockFix.shtml
Restart computer, and check again.

did all of these steps, step one made it so i could not connect back to the net on this pc unless i did a repair on the network connection, all others just reset my connection.

im still getting very slow net speeds, almost slower than 56k ... my wifes laptop is running way faster than mine, she wanted to test out her speed on that site, an hers was 4799 kb/s dl over 499 kb/s upload im wondering if its my network card? should i try taking it out an replugging it in to see if that could be the problem?

Oh, is it external network card?
Can you try wife's card, if she has any?
Try to reinstall card driver.

Gigabyte GN-WP01GS PCI WLAN Card(Turbo) #2

No need.

Uninstall current driver before installing new one.

idk if this matters at all but i was messing around in my start menu and i found this:

gigabyte wireless network adapters
with 2 inside

GN-WP01GS Soft AP
&
Gigabyte Wireless G-Adapter

i turned off my program that was running, im assuming it was the second one listed, an i turned on GN-WP01GS and i reloaded the speedtest.net here is the results:

483 KB/s Download
373KB/s upload
15MS Ping

i cant even load up the speedtest under the second adapter could it be faulty?
