Title: WD External Hard drive doesn't recognize Flash?
Post by: nnii33 on February 05, 2009, 06:17:11 PM
Hey there, I just bought  WD external hard drive (link is below)
http://support.wdc.com/product/kb.asp?modelno=WD3200H1U-00&x=13&y=14

aanndd, I'm runnin Vista 64 bit.

I'm having trouble installing the hard drive. when I double click setup.exe, a window pops up and says,
"To run this program, version 8 or greater of Flash ActiveX Control is needed. You can download it at etc. etc. etc..."

Well, I have version 9 or 10 or whichever new version there is. Also, while this window is up, another window is up in the top left corner, and it is green?

I hit cancel, because I DO have flash and then it says this:

When I went to "Solutions Online" it just told me the problem was caused by Flash and I'd have to install it. Well I uninstalled it, reinstalled it and I still have the same problem.

Has anyone else encountered this?? It's really weird.

See if can find version 8  of Flash.  The WD software might be quite old.

After WD is working reinstall the latest verion of Flash.

Adobe should have version 8 of Flash

Good luck

What do you mean? You connect external HD, and it's right there, ready to go.

I think he means some program that came with the drive, probably some backup program I expect.

A lot of people don't like WD Backup Anywhere, which is just Memeo Backup repackaged. You don't have to install the software that comes with the drive. Just connect it and use it. That's what I did with my Seagate. If you decide you need a backup solution, you can find a better one than the freebie from WD.

I agree ...
There are tons of issues with the My Book software.
Also once it's installed it can be a real bear to get rid of.

Yeah, I meant I couldn't install the software that came with it - I wasn't sure if its better to have that software installed or not, because so far I've just been dragging my crap into it.

Thanks for clearing that up, I'm glad I don't have to do that, it was getting pretty annoying  :-[

My Book Problems (http://www.google.com/search?q=My+Book+problems&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&aq=t&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&client=firefox-a)

255 million hits...trust me you're better off without the software.

Don't worry, that's all you need to do.

Thanks so much everyone for the replies.
It's a little frustrating how something that simple isn't working though.
I would really want to know how to fix it (because I'm so stubborn), but oh well!
I dont know if its because i'm using 64 bit vista, or if its WD.
I read that sometimes 64 bit vista has problems w/ stuff like that or something that has to do with the Flash not being compatible (I might be wrong).

64 bit vista

I reckon that may be the reason.

Figures!

That really sucks. I hate not having stuff work on the computer.

What can you do :(
