Title: Power adapter leads to blank screen

I have a Dell Inspiron 1520 laptop. If I use the power adapter the screen goes black after a couple of minutes although I can see shadows and know that the computer is still running. If I use battery power I do not get this problem, so I know that the screen itself works and that the power adapter is still charging the battery. I would be very grateful  for any help/suggestions as I am stumped.
