I installed SP1 via my normal scheduled updates, as i have been doing since
installation. When the system rebooted, there was an error
, so i now cannot boot my computer. I get the following message:-
File: ntoskrnl.exe
Status: 0xc0000098
Windows failed to load because a required file is missing or corrupt.
It will not even start by last known good configuration or safe mode.
Using the repair option on the install disc, brings this back to repaired state but after another automatic update it goes back to the same condition where i have to do this same thing all over again then it updates again and the problem cycles on
Any help would be greatly appreciated
-
You're saying, it happens every time, you install SP1?
Navigate to: C:\Windows\Minidump folder.
If you see any .dmp files, zip all of them, and attach zipped file to your next reply.
-
hi broni,
i dont really know whats being updated each time but the last update was about ten updates, which get wiped off each time this happens....i hope i did this post with zipfile right

OK. It took a while, because of number of dump files.
It looks like we have some serious issues here.
Basically, each crash lists different system file being at fault:
csrss.exe
volsnap.sys
ntkrpamp.exe (3)
Ntfs.sys
win32k.sys
svchost.exe
ecache.sys (2)
We either have some serious system files corruption, or some hardware problem.
Let's start with some tests:
1. Run hard drive diagnostics: http://www.tacktech.com/display.cfm?ttid=287
2. Run Windows Memory Diagnostics Tool: http://www.geekstogo.com/forum/Windows-Memory-Diagnostic-Tool-t177564.html
-
i'm sorry ive been to these sites but dont know which or what exactly to download from the lists, also i ran a memory test from my computer and it said all was fine, i have had an e-mail from microsoft asking me to perfom these tasks but dont feel confident that i know what i'm doing
Note: A computer may store more than one copy of Windows Vista. Please highlight the one which encounters issues. The order of the items in the dialog-box is identical with the one on the boot menu.
5. In the dialog box titled "System Recovery Options", click "Command Prompt" and run the following commands:
cd C:
del C:\windows\system32\drivers\pcmcia.sys*
del C:\windows\system32\drivers\1394bus.sys
del C:\windows\system32\drivers\ohci1394.sys
del C:\windows\system32\driverstore\filerepository\pcmcia.infblablabla*
del C:\windows\system32\driverstore\filerepository\1394.infblablabla
del C:\windows\system32\driverstore\filerepository\sdbus.infblablabla*
del C:\windows\inf\sdbus.inf*
del C:\windows\inf\sdbus.PNF*
By performing these steps, the personal profile on the hard drive will not be affected

An email from Micro$oft? M$ doesn't send any emails. You need to tell us more about that email.
As for tests...
...did you run Windows Memory Diagnostics Tool: http://www.geekstogo.com/forum/Windows-Memory-Diagnostic-Tool-t177564.html?
...hard drive test...I'll help you out here, but we need to know, what hard drive you have...
Download, and install Everest: http://www.majorgeeks.com/download4181.html (http://www.majorgeeks.com/download4181.html)
Open it, click Computer, then Summary.
In upper menu, go Report>Quick Report-Summary
Save it in text file, and paste it in your next post.
Don't include anything under the line Debug - PCI

From here: http://www.tacktech.com/display.cfm?ttid=287#maxtor, get Maxtor PowerMax v4.23
-
hi broni
ive downloaded Maxtor v4.23, but did not run the memory check from the website you posted, this looks a little complicated
-
Print it out, read couple of times, proceed slowly, and I assure you, it won't be complicated.
You may try it, or spend some bucks in computer shop. It's up to you.
-
well after several attempts this was a failure i got as far as burning the diagnostic material onto disk to boot system but after switching of computer then back on with the disk in the drive nothing happened, it just started up into windows, LOL....looks like I'm gonna be spending Bucks at the shop.
-
You're doing fine.
You need to access computer BIOS, and change boot order, so CD drive is listed before hard drive.
-
now you,ve totally lost me, i went in bios from the windows vista disc to reinstate vista by going into a box that said repair computer, run memory test. [which i did] or total reinstall. bios. after getting the errors but how i get there now is beyond me,and what to do when i'm there? oh boy!
hey Broni go easy on me i'm not a technogeek........LOL
-
i went in bios from the windows vista disc
No, no.
What computer brand, and model is it?
When you start the computer, at the bottom of the screen, you'll see:
Press some key to enter setup
You have to press THAT key to enter BIOS.
You'll see something like this:
Then you'll have to find boot section:
-
Dell pc acpi x86 based QUAD CORE 9.6Ghz Q6600 4GB/500GB & GeForce 7050 GALAXY (140271350778)
this is all i can tell you because it was purchased new custom built from e-bay.........the screen you show does not appear on my computer it just starts with a large screen saying american megatrends and a load of writing that lasts for a millisecond that i cant hold or read then into vista from black screen,,,,,,my other computer windows xp does though so i know what your saying. Ill keep trying
-
The screen, I posted won't appear until you press certain button to access BIOS.
I can see from the Everest report, that you have AMI BIOS.
When your computer starts, hold DEL key.
-
No that didn't work either, it goes straight into the windows black screen with the moving green bars, sorry Broni, thanks for your very kind help and patience, now it really does look like the last resort, dare i say it [shop] :'( kind regards...... Del
-
Hey Broni, sorry about that last message, went back and tried again and in it went it must have been a bit of crap under the Del key, ok so what next now that i can get into the big unknown mysteries of my computer?
-
Look at the screenshots in my reply #14.
Using arrow key, move the highlight from "Main" to "Boot", then hit Enter.
Boot section will be displayed.
Using arrow key, highlight CD drive, and then using "+" key move the drive to the first position.
When done, press F10 to "Save and exit".
Restart computer, and watch for:
Press any key to boot from CD
-
done all that but just got a black screen the disc never started,,,,,,,,,,,,, back to the drawing board..
-
Well, we're back to original suspicion - hardware problem.
If the computer doesn't want to boot from bootable disk, then it's either RAM, or motherboard issue.
Do you have more than one RAM stick?
If so, try to start computer with one stick at a time.
-
Well Broni, i was looking on the microsoft site and theres a lot of issues about vista having driver compatability problems and they are still looking into these problems what i cant understand is i have had the computer only six months and its been fine because i have never had this computer connected to the internet i've only used it for music software but over the last two weeks i had to connect and thats when the problem started so there must lie the answer, its fine until it uploads any updates for vista and then its back to re-instating everything from disc , i've now unchecked the box that lets it download updates it was pissing me off,,,,,,,,,,,so i dont know mabe i shall just get someone to look at it, i shall let you know what was the cause when its hopefully fixed, i just hope i dont have to wipe the hard drive because i have installed a lot of music software which cost a fortune ,many many thanks for your help, if you didnt live so far away i would buy you a beer,,thanks Broni all the best.............Del
-
i have had the computer only six months
Your best bet - take advantage of the warranty. I wasn't aware, the machine is still under warranty.
