ok, i cant figure this one out and have spent the last 3 hours scouring the internet and trying different things but to no avail
I currently have 2 systems side by side. This one i am on now is windows xp media, the one next to me that has the problem is windows xp.
I was upgrading my video card from an nvidia 5200 to a visiontek agp x1300. Had a couple problems doing that but figured everything out no problem, except i cant connect to internet and my network is not showing up. First thing i tried just to make sure cable wasn't bad was i switched the network cables and had same problem only on that computer. After reading on the internet which i can access using this computer i managed to find out i have no network connection present. No matter what i try i cannot bring it back. I've tried the network connection manager. tried winsockxpfix, tried several other things and i'm lost.......I need serious help please. ???

Turn off computer. Disconnect router, and modem from power source for 30 seconds.
Power them back on.
Restart computer.
If that doesn't work, bypass router, and connect computer straight to the modem.
If that doesn't work...
Go Start>Run (Start search in Vista), type in:
cmd
Click OK (in Vista, while holding CTRL, and SHIFT, press Enter).
In Command Prompt window, type in following commands, and hit Enter after each one:
ipconfig /flushdns
ipconfig /registerdns
ipconfig /release
ipconfig /renew
Restart computer.
If that doesn't work...
Go Start>Run (Start search in Vista), type in:
cmd
Click OK (in Vista, while holding CTRL, and SHIFT, press Enter).
At Command Prompt, type in:
netsh int ip reset reset.log
Hit Enter.
Type in:
netsh winsock reset catalog
Hit Enter.
Restart computer.
If that doesn't work...
Download, install, and run WinSockFix: http://www.softpedia.com/get/Tweak/Network-Tweak/WinSockFix.shtml
Restart computer, and check again.

first of all thank you for the help.
I just did all that and nothing worked. I think the problem happened when i deleted the drivers for the nvivia card, but i dont think that would make sense...?
Anyway, I'm the type that likes to stick with a problem until it gets fixed, but unless you have any tricks up your sleeve i think i might go buy a pci network card tomorrow. Do you think that will work?
Another question i have is i was thinking about wiping everything clean with a fresh xp install. I do not have the disk but the system is an hp and i have the recovery console on drive :d, do you recommend that and would that fix the problem?
thanks a bunch

Reinstall would be little bit extreme at this moment.
Any errors regarding network adapter in Device Manager?
Did you try to reinstall network adapter driver?
-
no errors, but i did try to reinstall the network drivers. It tells the original drivers are stored in c:\hp\drivers\lan, but i already know that as i am in that folder and try to install by using the install.exe. Then it tells me to install the driver through the device manager, which i tried but either it wont let me or i dont know what im doing at that point. But there definitely is no network connection in device manager.
-
Also, in device manager i now have 3 pci devices listed under other devices.....and i cant install the network drivers because there is no network device listed in device manager.....
very frustrating
-
well, im doing some more reading trying to figure this out and booted into safe mode. I can see network adapters in device manager (cannot see any when booted normal). There are 8 listed.
1. direct parallel
2. realtek rtl8139/810x family fast ethernet nic-packet scheduler
3. wan miniport (atw)
4. wan miniport (ip)
5. wan miniport (ip) - packet scheduler miniport
6. wan miniport (L2tp)
7. wan miniport (ppoe)
8. wan miniport (pptp)

Download, and install Everest: http://www.majorgeeks.com/download4181.html (http://www.majorgeeks.com/download4181.html)
Open it, click Computer, then Summary.
In upper menu, go Report>Quick Report-Summary
Save it in text file, and paste it in your next post.
Don't include anything under the line Debug - PCI
-
Also, i dont know if this is important but i noticed something in the startup folder called mod_sm......i've never seen that before...
-
now when i booted up normal that file is gone, so i guess it was some type of moddified startup when booting safe mode
-
so what do you think...any ideas to fix this?
-
Did you read my last reply?
-
shoot...i dont know how i missed that....doing it now

I can't see any wireless network adapter listed.
You have regular adapter listed in your Device Manager: realtek rtl8139/810x family fast ethernet, but nothing wireless.
See, if Everest says something in Network section.
Have you ever been able to connect wirelessly?
-
i never said anything about wireless....it is the wired network that i am having problems with...
...i cannot connect to internet on that computer and my network doesnt show up under network connections or device manager.....the only time i can see it under device manager is when booted into safe mode........it had been working until 2 days ago at which time during the removal of the nvidia geforce5200 graphics card and replacing with the visiontek card it disspeared.....
-
Oooops...I'm sorry. I'm dealing with two similar threads....
Uninstall current driver. Install this one: http://drivers.softpedia.com/get/NETWORK-CARD/REALTEK/REALTEK-RTL8139-810x-8169-8110-561112312003.shtml
-
no matter where i try to d/l i either get timed out or asked for username and password...... i was able to download this, will it work?
http://www.realtek.com.tw/downloads/downloadsView.aspx?Langid=1&PNid=6&PFid=6&Level=5&Conn=4&DownTypeID=3&GetDown=false (http://www.realtek.com.tw/downloads/downloadsView.aspx?Langid=1&PNid=6&PFid=6&Level=5&Conn=4&DownTypeID=3&GetDown=false)
-
Yeah. You're OK.
-
ok so heres what goin on....i cant see the device so i have to boot to safe mode to see it...then i go to the driver area and try to uninstall and get the message"failed to uninstall device. The device may be required to boot up the computer."
what next?
i do see the driver listed as c:\windows\system32\drivers\psched.sys
would it work to try to delete that file....?
-
This is not good.
I'd simply spend $15, and get new ethernet card.
-
ok, i already did that today but was waiting to see if we could resolve this.......i will install the card.......do you think it will work?
It should have nothing to do with the adapter already in place, right?
-
No. Wherever you connect ethernet cable, that device becomes active.
-
ok, i will do that in the morning.......
I truly appreciate all the help....how can i return the kindness...can i make a donation or something?
-
"Thank you" is perfectly enough :)
-
BIG Thank You!
Have a good weekend.
-
You too :)
-
guess what, installed the new card....still doesnt work.....still no network in device manager.....
*censored*?
-
When you put the card in, and started computer, did hardware wizard pop up?
-
yes....it detected hardware....i clicked cancel as per the card instructions and used their cd to install driver, which said succesful
-
im sorry for pm-ing you.....i didnt know if you got instant notification......i'm supposed to be moving my desk and computers in office today and didnt want to do that until i resolved this nightmare......
again, sorry for that.....
-
No problem :)
Shut down computer.
Remove card.
Start computer.
Shut it down.
Put the card back.
This time, let the Windows detect it, and install its driver.
See, if it's present in Device Manager.
-
new hardware wizard gets to the point where it wants to look to internet for driver....then i click browse to local folder which is the software disk but it wont recognize anything it needs from that disk
-
The driver should have .inf extension. Try pointing the wizard to those files/file.
-
i did, it then says the specified location does not contain information about your hardware.......the file is netrtlx.inf
-
No more .inf files?
Bad card? Wrong CD?
What's the card brand, and model?
-
the folders on the cd are adobe reader, drivers, manual, autorun.exe, autorun..inf.....in the drivers folder they are 3 folders windows 2000, windows vista and windows xp.....files are data1.cab, data1,hdr,data2.cab, engine32.cab, layout.bin, setup.exe,setup.ibt, setup.ini, and setup.inx.................
then i pointed installation manager to the drivers folder where the files are, netrl.cat, netrtlx.inf, rtnic64.sys, rtnic.sys, and rtnicxp.sys.....i pointed it to the netrtlx.inf file because when i got to that point that was the only one highlighted and allowed to choose.....
the card is from bestbuy it is a dynex dx-e102
im running out for an hour right now....
what do you think?
-
Just in case, there is something wrong with the CD, get
Product Drivers
Desktop 10/100 PCI Network Card
from here: http://www.dynexproducts.com/p-600-dynex-desktop-10100-pci-network-card.aspx
-
still no good.....im about to give up.....this sucks
-
I'd go back to Best Buy, and get some other brand.
-
i will try with another card...if that doesnt work what else is there?
At that point should i wipe everything out and start from scratch with the recovery?
Also, i dont have original disks can i do it from the d: hp recovery drive , and will that be a nightmare?
-
i know you're the expert, but i feel like its a setting soewhere within computer that maybe the network is turned off...is that possible?
i think this because everything was fine until i uninstalled the drivers for the graphics card, then the network doesn't work and the new card doesn't work......if i buy another card and that doesnt work i wasted 40.00 and more importantly all this time......did we cover everything as far as settings or anything in the bios or whatever?
-
It may be some setting, missing file, or so, but I'm not sure what else we can check.
You could use recovery partition, but you have to be aware, that all data will be lost.
Do you have good back up?
-
i've backed up everything i need (i think) to an external drive and also to a flash drive....
how hard is it to do the wipeout and start fresh....i can do it from the d drive recovery partition?
Will that reinstall windows just like i got from the factory?
-
Exactly. HP with XP uses F10 key on startup, I believe.
Make sure to get rid of pre-installed crap, when done.
-
most definitely......so if it is a software or internal issue with the networking it should work once i do the recovery, correct?
how long does it take to do that?
-
so my local office max has a d-link card for 14..99....do you think i should try that or just do the reinstall of os?
-
I'd probably go for reinstall.
Timing depends mostly on the size of your hard drive (how long to format). In most cases, 1-2 hours for a whole process.
-
all right......keeping my fingers crossed :-\
-
(http://fc06.deviantart.com/fs15/f/2007/023/9/1/_crossfingers__revision_by_Mrichston.gif)
-
well...i dont know.......
just did the clean install...onboard lan does not show up in device manager.....loaded drivers for the pci lan card but that doesnt show up either.....
*censored*?
is my computer shot?
-
Honestly, I'm running out of options here.
You may need professional check.
-
ok, thanks :(
-
We tried....
-
i know, i appreciate all the help.....thanks again
-
what do you think about updating the bios?
-
I have no opinion on that. It's always risky.
-
I have the opposite problem on a windows 7 machine - installed a pci lan card and lost video - remove the lan card - PRESTO - I have video - reinstall the lan - poof - video gone
any thoughts?
